ADAAM(EH) is a multidentate ligand with one soft N-donor atom and two hard O-donor atoms in its central frame. This tridentate arrangement of donor atoms provides selective binding to Am(III) compared to that with Cm(III) in highly acidic media, resulting in separation factors of up to 5.5. A continuous liquid-liquid extraction and stripping test was conducted using a multistage countercurrent mixer-settler extractor with ADAAM(EH) in n-dodecane. In this test, separation of Am(III) and Cm(III) was achieved with very high yield.

ADAAM has three donor atoms, one soft N-donor atom and two hard O-donor atoms, in the central frame. The combination of soft and hard atoms affords a tridentate donor set of atoms that ensures remarkable extractability and selectivity of Am(III) and Eu(III) in highly acidic media.

-(tetrakis-2-pyridylmethyl)ethylenediamine (TPEN) derivatives bearing a polymerizable double bond in the substituent structure of the pyridine ring are synthesized and subjected to copolymerization with
-isopropylacrylamide in the presence of AIBN. The obtained poly(TPEN-NIPA) gels show thermo-responsive swelling/shrinking behaviors and are employed for the extraction of cadmium(II) ion from the aqueous solution to examine the relationship of the gel characteristics and the extraction performance. The polymer gels composed of the TPEN derivative bearing C3, C4, C10 and branched C3 spacer chains are synthesized and temperature-dependent extraction behavior of cadmium ion is compared. These gels extract Cd(II) ion efficiently from the aqueous solution in the swelling state at 5
C, while little extraction is observed at 45
C with shrinking. It is found that poly(TPEN-NIPA) gel of branched C3 spacer (C3b) shows the excellent thermoresponsive extraction performance.

The neutron zooming tube has been developed using electronic zooming TV readout system for an X-ray microscope. This system consists of the photocathode, the electro-magnetic coil assembly and the CCD TV camera etc.. The photocathode consists of transmission type CsI layer in combination with neutron converters such as Gd foil. The system position sensitive resolution of 20
m has been obtained using neutron converter. We have found that it is determined from the distance between the CsI layer and the neutron converter, then the limiting resolution could be improved.

Hexaalkyl-nitrilotriacetamide (NTAamide) was evaluated for the separation of MA(III) and RE(III). NTAamide is a tetradentate ligand with one soft central N-donor atom and three hard carbonyl O-donor atoms in its skeleton. NTAamide was tested for the removal of MA(III) and RE(III) from HNO
into n-dodecane. MA(III) and RE(III) separation was demonstrated with a high yield through the extraction process using NTAamide. This study shows that NTAamide is a highly practical, high-performance extractant for partitioning MA(III) from RE(III).

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency is engaged in research and development of the "SELECT process" which is a separation technology for recovering actinides from spent fuel. A highly practical reagent, called HONTA, was developed. In the present study, HONTA was tested for the mutual separation of MA and RE.

JAEA continues to carry out the development of the ADS(Double-strata). Mutual separation of MA and Ln is important for the development of the partitioning process. The separation is particularly difficult, because they have the analogous chemical behavior. New reagent was synthesized and examined. The results of separation factors (SF) of Am against Eu are more than 25. The reagent is very stable chemically, high extraction capacity, fully miscible with hydrocarbon diluents, fast chemical kinetics, and following the CHON-principle.

Recently, we found that photo-induced particle formation of Pd
was promoted by coexistence of molybdenum anion in aqueous solution. In this study, we performed in-situ time-resolved XAFS measurement in the photoreduction of Pd
in presence of various concentration of molybdenum anion. The effect of molybdenum addition on photo-induced particle formation of Pd will be discussed based on the relationship between the photoreduction rate of Pd
and the concentration of molybdenum anion.

Alkyl diamide amine (ADAAM), a highly practical reagent with a simple structure, was evaluated for the separation of Am(III) and Cm(III). ADAAM is a multidentate ligand comprising one soft N-donor atom and two hard O-donor atoms as part of its central frame. This tridentate set of donor atoms provide selective binding for Am(III) and Cm(III) in highly acidic media and yield separation factors of up to 5.5. A continuous liquid-liquid extraction and stripping process were performed using ADAAM in n-dodecane as the extractant in a multistage countercurrent mixer-settler extractor. Separation of Am(III) and Cm(III) in very high yield was demonstrated.
