Chloromethyl styrene was grafted on polyolefin fibers. The obtained fibers were reacted with dimethylaminoethanol in ethanol. The resulting anion exchange fiber has 2.3 mmol/g of anion exchange capacity. After treatment with chlorine ion, the anion exchange fiber could adsorb the nitrate ion of 1.3 mmol/g-adsorbent at space velocity of 2000 h. This result implies that this anion exchange fiber can adsorb the nitrate ion rapidly.

Imparting of phosphonic acid and sulfonic acid into fiber grafted with chloromethyl styrene was investigated by selecting chemical agent for sulfonation and reaction order of functions. The chemical agent and the reaction order were optimized to decrease the damage in the mechanical strength of fibers.

Bifunctional chelate fiber having sulfonic acid can improve the metal adsorption in acid solution. The chemical addition of sulfonic acid into the chelate fiber leads the session of fiber adsorbent. The possibility of sulfonic acid grafting was investigated to improve the adsorption characteristic of iminodiacetic acid adsorbent.
