At the J-PARC Main Ring (MR), there have been various investigation carried out at the moment aiming at the beam operation of MW order. As one of the investigations, a study of the Rapid-Cycling Synchrotron (RCS) magnets was implemented. Increase of the extraction energy of RCS was needed to reduce beam loss, as beam loss in the MR injection region was large under influence of Space Charge effect at the injection beam of 3GeV. Therefore conceptual design of the extraction energy upgrade using dipole and quadrupole magnets of RCS was performed. In this paper, we will report the contents of the study in extraction energy upgrade of RCS magnets and problems which became clear as a result.

JRR-4, a light-water-moderated and cooled, swimming pool type research reactor using high-enriched uranium plate-type fuels had been operated from 1965 to 1996. In order to convert to low-enriched-uranium-silicied fuels, modification work had been carried out for 2 years, from 1996 to 1998. After the modification, start-up experiments were carried out to obtain characteristics of the low-enriched-uranium-silicied fuel core. The measured excess reactivity, reactor shutdown margin and the maximum reactivity addition rate satisfied the nuclear limitation of the safety report for licensing. It was confirmed that conversion to low-enriched-uranium-silicied fuels was carried out properly. Besides, the necessary data for reactor operation were obtained, such as nuclear, thermal hydraulic and reactor control characteristics. This report describes the results of start-up experiments and burnup experiments. The first criticality of low-enriched-uranium-silicied core was achieved on 14th July 1998, and the operation for joint-use has been carried out since 6th October 1998.

Times Cited Count:46 Percentile:84.32(Materials Science, Multidisciplinary)It has been believed for a long time that the metal-to-insulator (MI) transition of BaVS
is not accompanied by any spatial order of spin and lattice. We have carried out x-ray diffraction measurements of BaVS
single crystals using laboratory x-ray source as well as synchrotron radiation, and found that superlatiice reflections which double the lattice constant c exist below the transition temperature. The most porbable space group at the low-temperature insulator phase contains two in equivalent vanadium sites and thus a charge disproportionation of the vnadium ions is considered as the main cause of the MI transition.
