After the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, artificial radionuclides such as radioactive cesium and iodine were released into the environment. It caused great anxiety not only in the vicinity of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant but also in other regions of the world. Some members of the Japan Health Physics Society (JHPS), a leading academic society in Japan in the field of radiation protection, volunteered to establish a website called "Question and Answer about radiation in Daily Life" shortly after the accident to help reduce the residents anxiety about the health effects of radiation. In August 2011, Committee for "Question and Answer about radiation in Daily Life" was established in JHPS, making the website-related activities a responsibility of JHPS. The Q&A website continued to respond to the questions from the general public with expertise and sincerity until February 2013 when the Committee members decided to end the activities because the number of questions received had gradually decreased with the passage of time. This paper aims to introduce the following: the activities of the Q&A website during the two years (2011-2013), the stance chosen for the activities, the information related to the website activities and the analysis of Twitter data. Building on the experience and the knowledge obtained from the activities, it also discusses issues and experiences that can be utilized in the initial response to emergencies for radiation protection experts as well as other fields.

Pb,

Cm reactions were successfully measured by using the gas-filled recoil-ion separator GARIS. Fusion barrier distributions were extracted from these data, and compared with the coupled-channels calculations. It was found that the peak energies of the barrier distributions for the
Ca +
Pb and
Ti +
Pb systems coincide with those of the 2n evaporation channel cross sections for the systems, while that of the
Ca +
Cm is located slightly below the 4n evaporation ones. This results provide us helpful information to predict the optimum beam energy to synthesize superheavy nuclei.

However, these type deposits have not been searched in Japan. In this study, Bulk REE abundances (= REE), ion-exchangeable REE (= REE
) by ammonium chloride solution, and percentage of REE
relative to REE
(= REE
) in fresh and weathered granite samples in Southwest Japan (i.e., Hiroshima and Shimane Prefectures) were determined. The REE
and REE
were comparable to those of ion-adsorption type REE deposits in China. Extended X-ray adsorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra of REE in original samples and samples after the extraction of ion-exchangeable REE showed that (i) REE in samples with high REE
mainly forms outer-sphere complexes and (ii) the remaining REE in the rocks after the extraction forms inter-sphere complexes.

We investigated the local coordination structure of Pd(II) adsorbed on -MnO
, using X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analyses indicated that Pd was adsorbed on
-MnO
through ligand exchange, from Cl coordination to O coordination. Furthermore, curve fitting of EXAFS spectra demonstrated the formation of two different inner-sphere complexes, bidentate-mononuclear and bidentate-binuclear complexes, and this finding was supported by density functional theory calculations. The formation of inner-sphere complexes is reasonable given the relatively large distribution coefficients obtained from adsorption experiments.

The latest highlight is the formation of very volatile hexacarbonyl compound of element 106, Sg(CO). Following this success, second-generation experiments were performed to measure the first bond dissociation energy between the central metal atom and the surrounding ligand. The method using a tubular decomposition reactor was developed and successfully applied to short-lived Mo(CO)
, W(CO)
, and Sg(CO)

A tubular flow reactor was tested to decompose the hexacarbonyl complexes and to extract the first bond dissociation energies. A silver was found to be the most appropriate reaction surface to study the decomposition of the group 6 hexacarbonyl. It was found that the surface temperature at which the decomposition occurred was correlated to the first bond dissociation energy of Mo(CO)
and W(CO)
, indicating that the first bond dissociation energy of Sg(CO)
could be determined with this technique.

Performance of the new gas-filled recoil ion separator GARIS-II was investigated using asymmetric Ne-induced fusion reactions. The use of He-H
mixture gas for the gas-filled magnet significantly reduced background scattered particles detected at the focal-plane Si detector, and increased a transmission of the asymmetric reaction products. A target-identification system was newly installed for efficient measurements of excitation functions without changing beam energy nor target.

The short-lived isotopes with high recoil energy directly react with carbon-monoxides and form carbonyl complexes. Only highly volatile complexes were fast transported in a gas stream to counting and chemistry devices. Short-lived Mo, Tc, Ru, Rh, W, Re, Os, and Ir were found to form volatile carbonyl complexes, while no volataile complex of Hf and Ta were detected. This technique has been applied to a chemical investigation of the superheavy element Sg (atomic number 106), and will be applicable to various fields of nuclear science with short-lived transition metal isotopes.

In this technique, a hydrophobic membrane is utilized to separate an aqueous phase from the gas phase. With this technique, the dissolution efficiencies of short-lived radionuclides of Mo and
W were measured. Yields of more than 80% were observed for short-lived radionuclides at aqueous-phase flow rates of 0.1-0.4 mL/s. The gas flow-rate had no influence on the dissolution efficiency within the studied flow range of 1.0-2.0 L/min. These results show that this technique is applicable for on-line chemical studies of SHEs in the liquid phase.

This paper reviews recent improvement in the source development of laser-driven X-ray lasers and the applications in the research fields of material science, laser processing, X-ray imaging, and radiation damage in biological cells. In the application for material science, we have firstly observed temporal correlation between the domain structures of ferro-electric substance under the Curie temperature. In the laser processing, new X-ray laser interferometer reveals us the nano-scale surface distortion of substance pumped by a femto-second optical pulse. In the X-ray diffraction image, we have taken several static images of micro-structure of samples: now we are trying to extend the objective to nano-scale dynamics using pump and probe method. In the radiation damage of biological cells, we observed double strand break in DNA using X-ray laser exposure; this results are compared with the case using incoherent several KeV X-ray exposure.

We demonstrate a high-contrast, high-intensity double chirped-pulse amplification (CPA) Ti:sapphire laser system using an optical parametric chirped-pulse amplifier (OPCPA) as a preamplifier. By injecting cleaned microjoule seed pulses into the OPCPA, a temporal contrast greater than 10 within picosecond times before the main femtosecond pulse is demonstrated with the output pulse energy of 1.7 J and pulse duration of 30 fs, corresponding to a peak power of 60 TW at a 10 Hz repetition rate. The Low-radioactive Waste Treatment Facility (LWTF), which aims to provide the safe, efficient and economic treatment and disposal of Low-level Liquid Waste (LLW) generated from LWR spent fuel reprocessing, was constructed at the Tokai Reprocessing Plant (TRP), and a cold test is now being carried out. New treatment processes such as a removal process for radio-nuclides and the ROBE (BORSAURE EINENGUNG ANLAGE) solidification process are being implemented in the LWTF. In order to treat the large amount of sodium nitrate contained in the concentrated LLW with higher safety and economy, R&D work on nitrate-ion decomposition technology using a catalytic reduction method and on the solidification process by cementation is being undertaken. The results of this R&D will be adopted in the LWTF in the near future. This report describes an outline of liquid waste treatment in the LWTF and new treatment technologies for LLW to achieve safe, efficient and economic treatment and disposal.
