Observation of gamma rays up to 320 TeV from the middle-aged TeV pulsar wind nebula HESS J1849-000

Gamma rays from HESS J1849-000, a middle-aged TeV pulsar wind nebula (PWN), are observed by the Tibet air shower array and the muon detector array. The detection significance of gamma rays reaches $$4.0sigma$$ and $$4.4sigma$$ levels above 25 TeV and 100 TeV, respectively. The energy spectrum measured between 40 TeV $$<$$ E $$<$$ 320 TeV for the first time is described with a simple power-law function of dN/dE = $$(2.86pm1.44)times10^{-16}(E/40mathrm{TeV})^{-2.24pm0.41} mathrm{TeV^{-1} cm^{-2} s^{-1}}$$. The gamma-ray energy spectrum from the sub-TeV to sub-PeV ranges including the results of previous studies can be modeled with the leptonic scenario, Inverse Compton Scattering by high-energy electrons accelerated by the PWN of PSR J1849-0001, but the scenario requires sophisticated theoretical modeling. On the other hand, the gamma-ray energy spectrum can be simply modeled with the hadronic scenario in which gamma rays are generated from the decay of neutral pions produced by collisions between accelerated cosmic-ray protons and the ambient molecular cloud found in the gamma-ray emitting region. The cutoff energy of cosmic-ray protons $$E_{mathrm{p,cut}}$$ is estimated at $$log _{10}(E /mathrm{TeV})=3.73^{+2.98}_{-0.66}$$, suggesting that protons are accelerated up to the PeV energy range. Our study proposes that HESS J1849-000 should be further investigated as a new candidate for a Galactic PeV cosmic-ray accelerator, or "PeVatron".

High accuracy, high resolution $$^{235}$$U(n,f) cross section from n_TOF (CERN) from 18 meV to 10 keV

The $$^{235}$$U(n,f) cross section was measured in a wide energy range (18 meV - 170 keV) at the n_TOF facility at CERN, relative to $$^6$$Li(n,t) and $$^{10}$$B(n,$$alpha$$) standard reactions, with a setup based on a stack of six samples and six silicon detectors placed in the neutron beam. A resonance analysis has been performed up to 200 eV, with the code SAMMY. A good agreement, within 0.5%, is found on average between the new results and the latest evaluated data files ENDF/B-VIII.0 and JEFF-3.3, as well as with respect to the broad group average fission cross section established in the framework of the standard working group of IAEA. However, some discrepancies, of up to 4%, are still present in some specific energy regions.

Gamma-ray observation of the Cygnus region in the 100-TeV energy region

We report observations of gamma-ray emissions with energies in the 100-TeV energy region from the Cygnus region in our Galaxy. Two sources are significantly detected in the directions of the Cygnus OB1 and OB2 associations. Based on their positional coincidences, we associate one with a pulsar PSR J2032 + 4127 and the other mainly with a pulsar wind nebula PWN G75.2 + 0.1, with the pulsar moving away from its original birthplace situated around the centroid of the observed gamma-ray emission. This work would stimulate further studies of particle acceleration mechanisms at these gamma-ray sources.

High-rate performance of a time projection chamber for an H-dibaryon search experiment at J-PARC

We have developed a gas electron multiplier (GEM)-based time projection chamber (TPC) for the H-dibaryon search experiment at J-PARC. High-rate $$K^-$$ beam particles enter a TPC gas volume of approximately 0.2 m$$^3$$, in a direction perpendicular to the electric field. A long-rectangular hollow section is located inside the TPC volume to accommodate a diamond target. We commissioned the TPC using 230 MeV protons with beam rates of up to 1 MHz. The TPC data acquisition system collected 5768 pad signals in full readout mode, with almost 100% efficiency, at a preset trigger rate of 230 Hz. We operated the TPC in an Ar/CH$$_4$$ gas mixture (90/10) without a magnetic field. The spatial resolutions on the pad plane are measured to be 400-700 $$mu$$m, which correspond to 230-300 $$mu$$m in a magnetic field of 1 T. We confirmed high tracking capability at beam rates of up to 1 MHz.

n_TOF施設にて、熱から170keVの中性子エネルギー領域において、$$^{235}$$U(n, f)断面積を測定した。$$^{6}$$Li(n, t)および$$^{10}$$B(n, $$alpha$$)標準断面積に対する相対測定により、1.5%という系統的不確かさで測定値を得た。本測定には、6層からなるサンプルと6台のSi検出器を用いた。9$$sim$$18keVエネルギー領域において、本測定結果は、最近の評価済み核データであるENDF/B-VIII.0およびJEFF3.3の評価値が、約5%過大評価であることを示した。高分解能測定の結果、keV領域で、共鳴構造を観測した。本測定より、7.8$$sim$$11eVのエネルギー範囲の断面積の積分値について、249.7$$pm$$1.4(統計的不確かさ)$$pm$$0.94(系統的不確かさ)b$$times$$eVという結果を得た。この結果は、最近確立された標準値247.5$$pm$$3b$$times$$eVを支持するものである。

Cross section measurements of $$^{155,157}$$Gd(n,$$gamma$$) induced by thermal and epithermal neutrons

Neutron capture cross section measurements on $$^{155}$$Gd and $$^{157}$$Gd were performed using the time-of-flight technique at the n_TOF facility at CERN on isotopically enriched samples. The measurements were carried out in the n TOF experimental area EAR1, at 185m from the neutron source, with an array of 4 C$$_6$$D$$_6$$ liquid scintillation detectors. At a neutron kinetic energy of 0.0253eV, capture cross sections of 62.2(2.2) and 239.8(8.4) kilobarn have been derived for $$^{155}$$Gd and $$^{157}$$Gd, respectively, with up to 6% deviation relative to values presently reported in nuclear data libraries, but consistent with those values within 1.6 standard deviations. A resonance shape analysis has been performed in the resolved resonance region up to 181eV and 307eV, respectively for $$^{155}$$Gd and $$^{157}$$Gd, where on average, resonance parameters have been found in good agreement with evaluations. Above these energies and up to 1keV, the observed resonance-like structure of the cross section has been analysed and characterised. From a statistical analysis of the observed neutron resonances we deduced: neutron strength function of 2.01(28) $$times$$ 10$$^{-4}$$ and 2.17(41) $$times$$ 10$$^{-4}$$; average total radiative width of 106.8(14)meV and 101.1(20)meV and s-wave resonance spacing 1.6(2)eV and 4.8(5)eV for n + $$^{155}$$Gd and n + $$^{157}$$Gd systems, respectively.

Search for the lepton-flavor-violating decay $$B^{0}to K^{ast 0} mu^{pm} e^{mp}$$

We have searched for the lepton-flavor-violating decay $$B^{0}to K^{ast 0} mu^{pm} e^{mp}$$ using a data sample of 711 fb$$^{-1}$$ that contains $$772 times 10^{6}$$ $$Bbar{B}$$ pairs. The data were collected near the $$Upsilon (4S)$$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $$e^{+}e^{-}$$ collider. No signals were observed, and we set 90% confidence level upper limits on the branching fractions of $${cal B}(B^{0}to K^{ast 0} mu^{+} e^{-}) < 1.2times 10^{-7}$$, $${cal B}(B^{0}to K^{ast 0} mu^{-} e^{+}) < 1.6times 10^{-7}$$, and, for both decays combined, $${cal B}(B^{0}to K^{ast 0} mu^{pm} e^{mp}) < 1.8times 10^{-7}$$. These are the most stringent limits on these decays to date.

Measurements of multiparticle correlations in $$d$$+Au Collisions at 200, 62.4, 39, and 19.6 GeV and $$p$$+Au Collisions at 200 GeV and implications for collective behavior

Recently, multiparticle-correlation measurements of relativistic $$p/d/^3$$He$$+$$Au, $$p$$$$+$$Pb, and even $$p$$$$+$$$$p$$ collisions have shown surprising collective signatures. Here we present beam-energy-scan measurements of 2-, 4-, and 6-particle angular correlations in $$d$$$$+$$Au collisions at $$sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$$=200, 62.4, 39, and 19.6 GeV. We also present measurements of 2- and 4-particle angular correlations in $$p$$$$+$$Au collisions at $$sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$$=200 GeV. We find the 4-particle cumulant to be real-valued for $$d$$$$+$$Au collisions at all four energies. We also find that the 4-particle cumulant in $$p$$$$+$$Au has the opposite sign as that in $$d$$$$+$$Au, indicating that the correlations are geometrical and therefore collective in origin. Further we find that the 6-particle cumulant agrees with the 4-particle cumulant in $$d$$$$+$$Au collisions at 200 GeV, which indicates that nonflow effects are subdominant and provides strong evidence of collectivity.

軽水炉及び高速炉でのMOX燃料利用にあたり、高精度の中性子捕獲断面積及び核分裂断面積が必要とされており、NEAの専門家会合WPEC-26の報告書によれば、特に$$^{242}$$Puの中性子捕獲断面積について、500eVから500keVのエネルギー領域に対して7$$sim$$12%の精度が必要とされている。しかしながら、keV領域の測定値としては、不確かさが約35%と大きな1970年代のデータしかこの40年間存在しなかった。本論文では、n_TOF施設の第1実験室において測定実験を実施し、取得したデータを解析して得られた個々の中性子共鳴パラメータ及びその平均値について暫定結果を示す。

Monte Carlo (MC) simulations are an essential tool to determine fundamental features of a neutron beam, such as the neutron flux or the $$gamma$$ ray background, that sometimes can not be measured or at least not in every position or energy range. Until recently, the most widely used MC codes in this field had been MCNPX and FLUKA. However, the Geant4 toolkit has also become a competitive code for the transport of neutrons after the development of the native Geant4 format for neutron data libraries, G4NDL. In this context, we present the Geant4 simulations of the neutron spallation target of the n TOF facility at CERN, done with version 10.1.1 of the toolkit. The first goal was the validation of the intra-nuclear cascade models implemented in the code using, as benchmark, the characteristics of the neutron beam measured at the first experimental area (EAR1), especially the neutron flux and energy distribution, and the time distribution of neutrons of equal kinetic energy, the so-called Resolution Function. The second goal was the development of a Monte Carlo tool aimed to provide useful calculations for both the analysis and planning of the upcoming measurements at the new experimental area (EAR2) of the facility.

The n_TOF facility; Neutron beams for challenging future measurements at CERN

The CERN n_TOF neutron beam facility is characterized by a very high instantaneous neutron flux, excellent TOF resolution at the 185m long flight path (EAR-1), low intrinsic background and coverage of a wide range of neutron energies, from thermal to a few GeV. The overall efficiency of the experimental program and the range of possible measurements has been expanded with the construction of a second experimental area (EAR-2), located 20m on the vertical of the n_TOF spallation target. This upgrade, which benefits from a neutron flux 30 times higher than in EAR-1, provides a substantial extension in measurement capabilities, opening the possibility to collect data on neutron cross-section of isotopes with short half-lives or available in very small amounts. We will discuss the innovative features of the EAR-2 neutron beam that make possible to perform very challenging measurements on short-lived radioisotopes or sub-mg samples, out of reach up to now at other neutron facilities around the world. Finally, the future perspectives of the facility will be presented.

The neutron capture cross section of several key unstable isotopes acting as branching points in the s-process are crucial for stellar nucleosynthesis studies, but they are very challenging to measure due to the difficult production of sufficient sample material, the high activity of the resulting samples, and the actual (n,$$gamma$$) measurement, for which high neutron fluxes and effective background rejection capabilities are required. Capture cross section of $$^{147}$$Pm and $$^{171}$$Tm have been measured for time-of-flight measurements at the CERN n_TOF facility using the 19 and 185m beam lines. Activation experiments on the same $$^{147}$$Pm and $$^{171}$$Tm targets with a high-intensity 30 keV quasi-Maxwellian flux of neutrons will be performed using the SARAF accelerator and the Liquid-Lithium Target (LiLiT) in order to extract the corresponding Maxwellian Average Cross Section (MACS). The status of these experiments and preliminary results will be presented and discussed as well.
