In the current study, coupling between chemical, mass-transport and mechanical, so-called non-linear processes that control concrete degradation and crack development were investigated by coupled numerical models. Application of such coupled numerical models allows identification of the dominant non-linear processes that will control long-term concrete degradation and crack development in a TRU waste repository.

Times Cited Count:2 Percentile:22.05(Crystallography)Details are presented of the development of a coupled modeling simulator for assessing the evolution in the near-field of a geological repository for radioactive waste disposal where concrete is used as a backfill. The simulator uses OpenMI, a standard for exchanging data between simulation software programs at run-time, to form a coupled chemical-mechanical-hydrogeological model of the system. The approach combines a tunnel scale stress analysis finite element model, a discrete element model for accurately modeling the patterns of emerging cracks in the concrete, and a finite element and finite volume model of the chemical processes and alteration in the porous matrix and cracks in the concrete, to produce a fully coupled model of the system. Combining existing detailed simulation software in this way with OpenMI has the benefit of not relying on simplifications that might be necessary to combine all of the modeled processes in a single piece of software.

A computer program MACBECE has been developed to provide rigorous calculations of the long-term mechanical behavior of a TRU waste geological repository. Consideration is given to the expected chemical alteration of repository components, including cementitious materials and bentonite, and the mechanical interactions between repository and host rock. The long-term mechanical behavior of a TRU waste repository was evaluated in a deep soft rock site, where creep deformation is likely to occur from the initial construction phase to 10 years after repository closure. It was found that the stress didn't fall into a singularity of yield surface of the EC model applied to the mechanical behavior model of bentonite. The calculated displacement of the inner diameter of the repository, considering mechanical interaction between repository and host rock, was about half that of a result in 2nd progress report on R&D for TRU waste disposal in Japan.

We have constructed a linac for development of various accelerator components at J-PARC. The ion source is same as the J-PARC linac's, and the RFQ is a used one in the J-PARC linac. The beam energy is 3 MeV and nominal beam current is 30 mA. The accelerator has been already commissioned, and the first development program, laser-charge-exchange experiment for the transmutation experimental facility, has been started. In this paper, present status of this 3-MeV linac is presented.

We have used a beam scraper with the incident angle of 65deg to reduce the beam power deposition density in the MEBT between a 324 MHz RFQ and a 50-MeV DTL of the J-PARC linac. The 65 scraper was irradiated by the H
beam up to particle number of 1.47E22. We observed a lot of surface projections with several hundred micrometers high in the beam irradiation damage on the scraper by using the laser microscope. In order to study the limits of scrapers, we constructed a new 3 MeV linac at J-PARC. We will conduct the scraper irradiation test at the end of this year.

A mechanical analysis code MACBECE2014 has been developed at the Japan Atomic Energy Agency to make realistic simulations of the physical integrity of the near-field for performance assessment of geological disposal of TRU waste in Japan. The MACBECE2014 code can be used to evaluate long-term changes in the mechanical behavior and any subsequent changes in the permeability of engineering barrier components, including crack formation in cementitious materials caused by expansion due to metal corrosion. Simulated results of the TRU waste disposal system with a bentonite buffer using the MACBECE2014 code demonstrated that the low permeability of the engineering barrier system could be maintained for long time periods after disposal because the physical integrity of the bentonite buffer remained intact. Simulated results of the disposal system with a concrete backfill, showed that crack formation leads to a significant increase in permeability of the system.

In J-PARC linac, ACS (Annular-ring Coupled Structure) has been operating for one and a half years. Through the long term operation, the ACS cavities have been well conditioned. Therefore, the vacuum pressure of the ACS was reduced to 110
Pa, which is much lower than the required value, and RF trip rate was steadily decreased. At present, the ACS continues to be stably operating without sacrificing the operating time of the J-PARC accelerator complex. The vacuum leaks caused by the generated crack in the aluminum chain clamps in the ACS beam line have happened five times in the past. To prevent the same situation from occurring, we replaced all the aluminum clamps to the stainless steel clamps. The residual radiation between each ACS cavity is considerably high. It is considered that the CT monitors, which have smaller aperture than that of other instruments in the beam line, contributes to the residual radiation. We are trying to reduce the residual radiation by enlarging the monitor's aperture and by replacing the unused monitors to the titanium ducts in this summer shutdown period.

For the research and development about high-level radioactive waste disposal, it is important to evaluate the mechanical stability of the excavation and the long-term behavior of in situ rock. However, from the limited information such as the bowling core before the excavation, it is difficult to evaluate the mechanical properties of in situ rock containing cracks. For this reason, evaluation of rock properties based on Specific Energy using mechanical data from an excavation machine is carried out. This report describes the results of the joint research carried out in FY 2010 to FY 2012.

The results are as follows (1) For the ventilation shaft at GL-350m, the crack tensor deformation analysis based on FY2004 work's results showed the calculated displacement was smaller than the measured displacement. A geometrical parameters of fractures in FY2004 work's result was different from one based on geological observation in the shaft. Therefore, the crack tensor of FY2004 work's results seems to be underestimated. (2) Large discontinuities with NE strike and high dipping observed in a shaft were major reason for the difference of crack tensors determined by borehole investigation from surface and geological observations in a shaft. Therefore, the crack tensor for pilot borehole investigation in a shaft was calculated as well and compared with each results. It was found that the fabric tensor is similar with it of geological observation and the vale was medium. (3) The crack tensor around GL-500m was estimated by relation of statistical quantities for fractures between GL-300m and GL-500m. Consequently, the deformation analysis based on the estimated crack tensor showed an increase in convergence and stress in the support system compared to FY2004 work's results.

The energy upgrade of the J-PARC linac was started from March 2009. In this project 20 Annular Coupled Structure (ACS) modules will be fabricated. The resonant frequency of the ACS module has to be tuned with mechanical machining before the final brazing. Therefore the test cells were fabricated to accumulate frequency tuning parameters. We fixed the final dimensions and the machining amount of the frequency tuning using these results. So far, the cell parts for the five ACS modules were tuned within 71.93 0.05 MHz. At the moment the first ACS module is being assembled and it will be completed in autumn 2010.

The mass production of the ACS (Annular-ring Coupled Structure) cavity started from March 2009 for the J-PARC linac energy upgrade from 181 MeV to 400 MeV. This upgrade project requires 18 ACS accelerating modules and two debunchers additionally within three years. The schedule is so tight that we have to optimize the fabrication process. Thus the test cells were fabricated for the all geometrical beta before the mass production to confirm the initial design and the frequency tuning procedure. This paper describes our approach for the mass production and the current status.

An ACS (Annular Coupled Structure) module has been developing for the 190-MeV to 400-MeV part of the J-PARC Linac. We have conducted the high power test of the first ACS module which consists of two accelerating tanks with 17 cells and a bridge tank with 9 cells. This paper describes results of the high power RF tests. The module achieved an average axial accelerating gradient of E0 = 4.5 MV/m at 1.8 MW RF input power, 0.6 ms pulse width, and 50 Hz repetition rate.

The J-PARC ACS cavity consists of many cell parts. For the mass production, the ACS requires about 1300 cell parts, so that it is important to reduce the machining time. In the previous ACS model, it took about three hours per one coupling slot. We, therefore, optimized the slot design, the tolerance, and the machining process. As a result, the machining time reduced to forty-five minutes per one slot. The four test cells were fabricated to measure the frequencies and Q-values, and these results were compared with the electromagnetic analysis with the Microwave Studio. Between the analysis and the measurement, the differences are 11.5 MHz and 4
5 MHz, respectively, for the accelerating mode, and for the coupling mode.

The temperature rise of 972 MHz Klystron RF Window was measured using an infrared thermometer with a pulse width of 600 us, and a repetition rate of 50 pps, and a peak power of 2.6 MW. In this data, the estimated temperature rise at the full RF Power (3 MW) would be about 70 degree, which is lager than design value of 30 degree.
