Ferroaxial transitions in glaserite-type compounds; Database screening, phonon calculations, and experimental verification

The so-called "ferroaxial transition" characterized by a rotational structural distortion that breaks a mirror symmetry has gained growing interest in terms of a new class of ferroic state in crystalline materials. RbFe(MoO$$_{4}$$)$$_{2}$$ which belongs to glaserite-type compounds, X□;1 Y□;2 [M(TO$$_{4})_{2}$$], is one of the most representative materials showing a ferroaxial transition, i.e., ferroaxial materials. Considering a variety of glaserite-type compounds, we expect that they provide a good arena for ferroaxial materials. In this work, we explored new ferroaxial materials by formula-based screening using regular expression search and symmetry detection algorithm. As a result, we found that a glaserite-type compound, K$$_{2}$$Zr(PO$$_{4}$$)$$_{2}$$, is one of the promising candidates for ferroaxial materials. Experimentally, we demonstrate that K$$_{2}$$Zr(P O$$_{4}$$)$$_{2}$$ shows a ferroaxial transition at about 700 K, which is well explained by ab initio phonon calculations. The ferroaxial nature of K$$_{2}$$Zr(PO$$_{4}$$)$$_{2}$$ is further confirmed by the observation of its domain structures using a linear electrogyration effect, that is, optical rotation in proportion to an applied electric field. Our work provides an effective approach to exploring ferroaxial materials.

This study aims to investigate the influence of the pulse duration on the mechanical properties and dislocation density of a aluminum alloy treated using dry laser peening. The results of the micro-Vickers hardness test, residual stress measurement, and dislocation density measurement demonstrate that over a pulse duration range of 180 fs to 10 ps, the maximum peening effects are achieved with a pulse duration of 1 ps. Moreover, the most significant dry laser peening effects are obtained by choosing a pulse duration that achieves a laser intensity that simultaneously generates the strongest shock pressure, suppresses optical nonlinear effects, and realizes the least thermal effects, which weaken the shock effects.

2019年4月「はやぶさ2」ミッションは、地球に近い炭素質の小惑星(162173)リュウグウの人工衝撃実験を成功させた。これは露出した地下物質を調査し、放射加熱の潜在的な影響をテストする機会を提供した。はやぶさ2の近赤外線分光器(NIRS3)によるリュウグウの地下物質の観測結果を報告する。発掘された材料の反射スペクトルは、表面で観測されたものと比較して、わずかに強くピークがシフトした水酸基(OH)の吸収を示す。これは、宇宙風化や放射加熱が最上部の表面で微妙なスペクトル変化を引き起こしたことを示している。ただし、このOH吸収の強度と形状は、表面と同様に、地下物質が300$$^{circ}$$Cを超える加熱を経験したことを示している。一方、熱物理モデリングでは、軌道長半径が0.344AUに減少しても、推定される掘削深度1mでは放射加熱によって温度が200$$^{circ}$$Cを超えて上昇しないことが示されている。これは、リュウグウ母天体が放射加熱と衝撃加熱のいずれか、もしくは両方により熱変化が発生したという仮説を裏付けている。

電子顕微鏡や放射光等の先端解析技術は、試料の構造や化学状態について多くの有用な情報をもたらし、材料研究に欠かせないツールとなっている。本稿では、これらの先端解析技術の中から、電子線ホログラフィや放射光を用いたX線小角散乱法(SAXS)等の手法を中心に、材料研究への応用事例を紹介する。これらの手法を活用することにより、未知であった材料の本質を明らかにすることができ、新製品開発の指針を定める上で重要な知見を得ることができる。

Magnetic phase diagram of two heavy fermion metamagnets UIr$$_2$$Zn$$_{20}$$ and UCo$$_2$$Zn$$_{20}$$ is investigated. UIr$$_2$$Zn$$_{20}$$ shows a reconstruction of the electronic states across the metamagnetic crossover. However, UCo$$_2$$Zn$$_{20}$$ shows a rather continuous evolution. The remarkable difference in both compounds can be accounted for by different degree of hybridization between 5$$f$$ and ligand electrons.

重い電子系化合物YbT$$_{2}$$Zn$$_{20}$$(T: Rh and Ir)について、X線吸収分光法によりYb価数観察を行った。いずれの化合物でもYb価数は温度依存性を示し、約100K以下で冷却とともにYb価数が減少する変化が見られた。これは、同型化合物であるYbCo$$_{2}$$Zn$$_{20}$$において温度依存性が見られないこととは対照的な結果である。

YbCo$$_2$$Zn$$_{20}$$ has a heavy-fermion ground state with an enormously large Sommerfeld coefficient of 8 J/molK$$^2$$, and that is sensitive to external fields. Whereas pressure induces antiferromagnetic order, magnetic field induces metamagnetic transitions around 0.5 T, and new ordered state appears above 6 T for $$B{parallel}{langle}111{rangle}$$. In order to get insights into electronic states and its magnetic field response, neutron scattering experiments on single crystalline samples were carried. In a field-induced phase, magnetic reflections were successfully observed, which has a different propagation vector to that of pressure induced phase. Inelastic neutron scattering probes a crystal-field excitation at a low excitation energy which overlaps to quasielastic response. The results suggest degenerated energy scale, and that leads to variety of external response in YbCo$$_2$$Zn$$_{20}$$.

Two europium compounds with the same structure EuGa$$_4$$ and EuAl$$_4$$ have been investigated. The Fermi surfaces revealed experimentally show a peculiar feature: flat Fermi surface sheets appear parallel to the tetragonal [110] planes. Reflecting this, a charge density wave transition due to the nesting of Fermi surface sheets has been observed in EuAl$$_4$$.

Transport properties of UT$$_2$$Zn$$_{20}$$ (T: Co, Ir) have been investigated by measuring Hall effect. Overall behavior is explained by the skew scattering on the impurity model at high temperatures and the periodic Anderson model at low temperatures. Rather complicated behavior was observed in UIr$$_2$$Zn$$_{20}$$ with ferromagnetic instability, implying the electronic modification under magnetic field.

Fermi surfaces and magnetic properties of an antiferromagnet EuBi$$_3$$ were investigated on a flux-grown single crystal. A critical magnetic field of 225 kOe where the magnetic moments are forced to align ferromagnetically was well explained by the magnetic exchange interaction based on a two-sublattice model. The Fermi surface characteristics are in agreement with the theoretical prediction indicating a fully magnetic divalent state in Eu atoms.

High quality single crystals of EuGa$$_4$$ have been grown from Ga flux. Electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, high-field magnetization, specific heat, thermoelectric power and de Haas-van Alphen effect were investigated. Antiferromagnetic transition due to divalent Eu atoms were observed at 16.5 K. A charge density wave transition was also found under high pressure accompanied by a Fermi surface reconstruction. These observations were fully accounted for by the Fermi surface topology and corresponding band calculations.

We succeeded in growing single crystals of YbTIn$$_5$$ (T: Co, Rh, Ir), YbGa$$_4$$, YbT$$_2$$Zn$$_{20}$$ (T: Co, Rh, Ir), etc. The electronic and magnetic properties are clarified by measuring the electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, specific heat and de Haas-van Alphen effect.

Electronic states of an antiferromagnet UCd$$_{11}$$ and its reference compound ThCd$$_{11}$$ were investigated by means of de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect. From the cyclotron effective mass determined from the dHvA oscillation, the electronic specific heat of UCd$$_{11}$$ was estimated as 100 mJ/K$$^2$$mol, much smaller than 840 in the previous report. The result suggests that magnetic excitation contributes significantly to the specific heat.

Fermi surface and superconducting properties were investigated on an non-centrosymmetric LaNiC$$_2$$ compound. Reflecting the crystal structure characteristics, the Fermi surfaces are split due to the antisymmetric spin-orbit interaction. On the other hand, thermodynamic property in the superconducting state follow the conventional BCS theory despite the splitting of Fermi surfaces.

Single crystals of quasicrystal approximants RCd$$_6$$ (R: rare earths) were prepared using the self-flux method and subsequent annealing. A structural transition was confirmed in some of these crystals. Antiferromagnetic ordering was observed for R = Nd, Sm, Tb and Dy. It was found that the structural order-disorder transition has a great influence on the magnetic ordering and transport properties.

We studied the Fermi surface properties of YbCu$$_2$$Si$$_2$$ and YbCu$$_2$$Ge$$_2$$ with the tetragonal structure by measuring the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations, together with the energy band calculations. It was clarified that 4f electrons contribute to the Fermi surface of a valence fluctuating compound YbCu$$_2$$Si$$_2$$, but not to that of a divalent compound YbCu$$_2$$Ge$$_2$$. We also studied the heavy fermion properties of YbT$$_2$$Zn$$_{20}$$ (T: Co, Rh, Ir) with the cubic caged structure. The metamagnetic behavior or an abrupt nonlinear increase of magnetization was observed. By measuring the electrical resistivity under pressure and magnetic field, we clarified that the electronic state close to the quantum critical point is realized in YbIr$$_2$$Zn$$_{20}$$ at 5.2 GPa and also YbCo$$_2$$Zn$$_{20}$$ at ambient pressure.

Magnetic and transport properties under high magnetic field were studied on a magnetic semiconductor $$beta$$-US$$_2$$. Large magnetization reaching 1.75 $$mu_{rm B}$$ has been observed at 50 T. At the same time, resistivity decreases drastically from insulating behavior at 0 T to almost metallic characteristics at 50 T. The results are discussed based on the magnetic polaron mechanism.

Metamagnetic behavior of the heavy fermion compound YbIr$$_2$$Zn$$_{20}$$ has been studied experimentally. The metamagnetic transition was clearly seen in the bulk magnetization curve. Near the metamagnetic critical field H$$_m$$ $$sim$$ 100 kOe, the effective mass of conduction electrons exhibits a significant enhancements. It is suggested that the present metamagnetism is related to the magnetic instability around the quantum critical point.

Magnetic and superconducting properties of CeRhGe$$_2$$ and CePtSI$$_2$$ have been investigated by bulk property measurements and neutron scattering experiments. CeRhGe$$_2$$ was found to order antiferromagnetically with an ordered moment 1.3 $$mu_{rm B}$$/Ce along the $$c$$-axis of the orthorhombic unit cell. High pressure resistivity measurements revealed a suppression of the antiferromagnetic transition with increasing pressure and the occurrence of superconductivity near the critical pressure where antiferromagnetism vanishes. Quantum-critical characteristics are expected to these compounds.

発電実証だけでなく、最終的には経済性までを一段階で見通しうる核融合原型炉SlimCSの概念設計の成果を報告する。核融合の開発では、これまで、1990年に提案されたSSTR(Steady State Tokamak Reactor)が標準的な原型炉概念とされてきたが、本研究はSSTRより軽量化を図るため小規模な中心ソレノイドを採用して炉全体の小型化と低アスペクト比化を図り、高ベータ及び高楕円度(グリーンワルド密度限界を高めうる)を持つ炉心プラズマにより高出力密度を目指した。主要パラメータは、プラズマ主半径5.5m,アスペクト比2.6,楕円度2.0,規格化ベータ値4.3,核融合出力2.95GW,平均中性子壁負荷3MW/m$$^{2}$$とした。この炉概念の技術的成立性を、プラズマ物理,炉構造,ブランケット,超伝導コイル,保守及び建屋の観点から検討した。
