Yamaguchi, Yuji; Kondo, Yasuhiro; Meigo, Shinichiro; Takayanagi, Tomohiro; Fujimori, Hiroshi*; Shinozaki, Shinichi

Proceedings of 22nd Annual Meeting of Particle Accelerator Society of Japan (Internet), p.655 - 660, 2026/03

Preliminary designs of new bending magnets have been considered for the second target station (TS2) of Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF), J-PARC. To give a design approach for the bending magnets, several examples of bending magnets, such as a pulse bending magnet and a septum magnet were reviewed. The reviewed magnet specifications compared with requirements for the new bending magnets indicate that the new pulse bending magnet requires a new design idea, while the new septum magnet can be designed based on the previous design of an extraction septum magnet for the 3-GeV synchrotron in J-PARC. The new design idea for the pulse bending magnet and the septum magnet design idea based on the previous one are presented.

Journal of Physics; Conference Series, 3094(1), p.012023_1 - 012023_5, 2025/09

The 3-GeV proton beam from the rapid cycling synchrotron (RCS) of J-PARC is transported to the spallation neutron source at Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) by a 3-GeV RCS to Neutron facility Beam Transport (3NBT) line. Recently, the first design idea of a new proton beam transport line has been proposed for a future target station of the MLF (TS2). In the present study, proton beam transport is simulated near the TS2 target where a bending magnet and a solenoid are located for muon beam transport. The purposes are to clarify the magnetic field effects on the proton beam by the magnets and to present a method to correct each effect. Orbit deviation by the bending magnet and vertical size expansion due to profile rotation by the solenoid can be corrected by installing additional bending magnets and a solenoid with reversal magnetic field, respectively. The correction method is expected to be effective and also needs to be studied further for detail design.

Kondo, Yasuhiro; Tamura, Jun; Yee-Rendon, B.; Meigo, Shinichiro; Maekawa, Fujio; Kako, Eiji*; Umemori, Kensei*; Sakai, Hiroshi*; Domae, Takeshi*

Proceedings of 21st International Conference on Radio-Frequency Superconductivity (SRF 2023), p.947 - 951, 2023/07

Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) has been proposing an accelerator-driven system (ADS) as a future nuclear system to efficiently reduce the high-level radioactive waste generated at nuclear power plants. As the first step toward the full-scale CW proton linac for the JAEA-ADS, we are now prototyping a low-beta (around 0.2) single-spoke cavity. Because there is no experience in manufacturing super-conducting spoke cavities in Japan, prototyping and performance testing of the cavity are essential to ensure the feasibility of the JAEA-ADS. The dimensional parameters of the prototype spoke cavity were optimized to obtain higher cavity performance. The actual cavity fabrication started in 2020. Most of the cavity parts were fabricated in fiscal year 2020 by press-forming and machining. In 2021, we started welding the cavity parts together. After investigating the optimum welding conditions using mock-up test pieces, each cavity part was joined with smooth welding beads. Currently, the cavity's body section and the beam port sections have been assembled. This paper presents the current status of the JAEA-ADS and it's cavity prototyping.

Proceedings of 31st International Linear Accelerator Conference (LINAC 2022) (Internet), p.180 - 183, 2022/09

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) has proposed an accelerator-driven subcritical system (ADS) to efficiently reduce high-level radioactive waste generated at nuclear power plants. One of the challenging R&D aspects of ADS is the reliability of the accelerator. In preparation for the full-scale design of the CW proton linac for the JAEA-ADS, we are now prototyping a low-beta (around 0.2) single spoke cavity. Since there is no experience in Japan in manufacturing a superconducting spoke cavity, prototyping and performance testing of the cavity is essential to ensure the feasibility of the JAEA-ADS linac. In the Japanese fiscal year 2021, we have started welding cavity parts together. By preliminarily examining the electron beam welding conditions, each press-formed niobium part was joined with a smooth welding bead. At present, we have fabricated the cavity's body part.

Development of {QWR}s for the Future Upgrade of {JAEA} Tandem Superconducting Booster

Kondo, Yasuhiro; Harada, Hiroyuki; Kabumoto, Hiroshi; Kamiya, Junichiro; Matsuda, Makoto; Moriya, Katsuhiro; Tamura, Jun; Kako, Eiji*; Domae, Takeshi*; Sakai, Hiroshi*; et al.

Proceedings of 20th International Conference on RF Superconductivity (SRF 2021) (Internet), p.299 - 302, 2021/10

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) tandem booster is one of the pioneering superconducting heavy ion linac in the world. It consists of 40 QWRs with an operation frequency of 130 MHz and $$beta_{opt} = 0.1$$, and has potential to accelerate various ions up to Au to 10 MeV/u. The user operation was started in 1994, however, it has been suspended since the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. Recently, in addition to the efforts to restart the tandem booster, activities to develop new lower-beta cavities to improve the acceleration efficiency of heavier ions such as Uranium has been launched. In this work, the current status of the design study of the QWRS for the JAEA tandem facility is presented. Electro-magnetic design using simulation code was performed and acceleration gradient of 5.7 MV/m and 6.6 MV/m was obtained for 130-MHz and 65-MHz QWRs, respectively.

Searching for effective pathways for the production of proton- and neutron-rich isotopes through an optimal combination of reaction mechanism and energy is one of the main driving forces behind experimental and theoretical nuclear reaction studies as well as for practical applications in nuclear transmutation of radioactive waste. We report on a study on incomplete fusion induced by deuteron, which contains one proton and one neutron with a weak binding energy and is easily broken up. This reaction study was achieved by measuring directly the cross sections for both proton and deuteron for $$^{107}$$Pd at 50 MeV/u via inverse kinematics technique. The results provide direct experimental evidence for the onset of a cross-section enhancement at high energy, indicating the potential of incomplete fusion induced by loosely-bound nuclei for creating proton-rich isotopes and nuclear transmutation of radioactive waste.

This paper introduces a new approach to measure the muon magnetic moment anomaly $$a_{mu}=(g-2)/2$$ and the muon electric dipole moment (EDM) $$d_{mu}$$ at the J-PARC muon facility. The goal of our experiment is to measure $$a_{mu}$$ and $$d_{mu}$$ using an independent method with a factor of 10 lower muon momentum, and a factor of 20 smaller diameter storage-ring solenoid compared with previous and ongoing muon g-2 experiments with unprecedented quality of the storage magnetic field. Additional significant differences from the present experimental method include a factor of 1000 smaller transverse emittance of the muon beam (reaccelerated thermal muon beam), its efficient vertical injection into the solenoid, and tracking each decay positron from muon decay to obtain its momentum vector. The precision goal for $$a_{mu}$$ is a statistical uncertainty of 450 parts per billion (ppb), similar to the present experimental uncertainty, and a systematic uncertainty less than 70 ppb. The goal for EDM is a sensitivity of $$1.5times10^{-21}$$ e$$cdot$$cm.

Pulse height distributions were measured using a CdZnTe detector inside a lead collimator to investigate main source producing high dose rates above the shield plugs of Unit 3 at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. It was confirmed that low energy photons are dominant. Concentrations of Cs-137 under 60 cm concrete of the shield plug were estimated to be between 8.1$$times$$10$$^9$$ and 5.7$$times$$10$$^{10}$$ Bq/cm$$^2$$ from the measured peak count rate of 0.662 MeV photons. If Cs-137 was distributed on the surfaces of the gaps of the shied plugs with radius 6 m and with the averaged concentration of 5 points, 2.6$$times$$10$$^{10}$$ Bq/cm$$^2$$, total amount of Cs-137 is estimated to be 30 PBq.
