JRR-3 operated by Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) is 20 MW grade research reactor for widely used for various academic research and industrial applications in many fields from utilization of internal irradiation to utilization of neutron beam. Although JRR-3 has not been operated due to respond to the new regulation standard established after the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 11, 2011, JRR-3 will resume operation in October 2020. This article reports neutron utilization such as various kinds of reactor irradiation, prompt gamma-ray analysis, neutron radiography and neutron residual stress analysis, and the efforts of the JRR-3 user 's office aiming for a one - stop office.

This paper briefly describes the present status of the two prompt -ray measurement facilities, PGA and MPGA, installed on neutron beam lines attached to Japan Research Reactor-3 (JRR-3). The description includes those on the configuration of the beam line as well as the supporting system of the irradiation sample, neutron intensity at the irradiation position, and detectors used for the prompt -ray measurement, for each of the facilities.

Since large amounts of mercury are constantly being released into the environment by small-scale gold mining in many developing countries, the mercury concentration in tailings and water has to be determined to mitigate environmental pollution. PGA can determine high mercury concentrations in polluted samples as it has an appropriate level of sensitivity. Moreover, gold concentrations can be determined sequentially by using INAA after PGA. In conclusion, the analytical procedure established in this work using PGA and INAA is the best way to evaluate the degree of pollution and the tailing resource value. This method will significantly contribute to mitigating problems in the global environment.

A simulated solidified product containing C, which was prepared by using nuclear reaction N(n, p)C with thermal neutron irradiation, was analyzed by the present method to compare with a conventional radiochemical analysis using oxidizing combustion. The reproducible and quantitative recovery of C from the simulated solidified product indicates that the present method is superior and more efficient for C analysis in solidified products than the conventional method using oxidizing combustion.

Pulsed neutrons are produced by bombarding a pulsed proton beam on Li (or H) or a deuteron beam on H. The performance of the new system was studied by measuring discrete rays from neutron capture by Pb and Pb to their low-lying states at several resonances at 10 110 keV using neutrons from Li(p,n)Be. The rays were detected with a good signal-to-noise ratio by means of a highly sensitive anti-Compton NaI(Tl) spectrometer combined with a time-of-flight method. The present study demonstrated good sensitivity of the new system to determine the neutron-capture cross section of a nucleus at keV neutron energy.

This system is one of the promising ways which enables the nondestructive and isotopic observation for internal structure on samples, since neutron beam strongly penetrates material and picks up information on several elements and isotopes. Here, the 3D imaging algorithms that can be employed in this system include computed tomography method which can re-construct position of elements inside samples, measuring -ray from neutron capture reaction by several elements on a sample in three different directions with use of a collimated neutron beam. The present system had a position resolution with the order of mm reducing background -ray caused by several materials used as shields for scattered neutrons on a sample position. Finally, the outline of this system is presented with some performance tests.

The existence of a daughter nuclides of Th and U series, however, were observed by measurements of the rays with a high purity Ge detector. In this study, in order to clarify the contents of trace elements, the hormesis cosmetics including radiation sources were analyzed using instrumental neutron activation analysis method (INAA), prompt activation analysis (PGAA) and neutron activation analysis with multiple ray detection (NAAMG). In the conference, we will report the results of analysis data which including heavy metallic and actinide elements. Furthermore, we will evaluate a possibility of uptake of heavy metal elements and radiation sources, and will discuss the influence of them to human body.

In addition, the 1 strength from the 3/2 state leading to the 3/2 state with three () neutrons was six times stronger than that to the 5/2 ground state with a single () neutron. These anomalous -ray decay patterns give the first clear experimental evidence for the predicted property of the 3/2 state as mainly having a one-hole-four-particle configuration. Unique features of the O ground state with a two-hole-four-particle configuration and of the 3/2 state combined with a discrete prompt -ray spectroscopy following the thermal neutron capture of O enabled us to exclusively identify the configuration of the 3/2 state.

Neutron radiography is an effectively nondestructive tool for inspection of irradiated nuclear fuels and materials. Neutron CT an neutron imaging plate methods, which are advanced techniques in the neutron radiography, enabled to obtain cross-section images and to evaluate an amount of the element compositions. This paper describes results of those methods using unirradiated fuels and materials and discussed the practicability of those methods to irradiated fuels and materials.

Firstly, absolute Ti concentrations in the samples were determined accurately by the standard addition method. Secondly, relative multi-element concentrations were determined by the -standardization method. Finally, absolute multi-element concentrations were obtained by normalizing the relative multi-element concentrations with the absolute Ti concentration in the samples. The 15 elements such as H, B, Na, Si, S, Cl, K, Ca, Ti Cr, Mn, Fe, Cd, Sm and Gd were determined by the -PGA. Analytical results of these reference materials agreed with the certified or reference values within about 10%.

The prompt -ray emission probabilities were derived from the recommended k-factors using atomic weight, isotopic abundance and thermal neutron cross-section of other nuclear constants consisting the k factors, for which one can obtain accurate data. The derived -ray emission probabilities for the light elements (H to Ca) well agreed within 10% with those of the ENSDF, which reflect recent data, which the agreements for heavy elements (Ti to Pb) were 40% with those of the ENSDF, which are still composed of old data.
