Local structural changes in V-Ti-Cr alloy hydrides with hydrogen absorption/desorption cycling

Low-vanadium-concentration alloys have low durability, and their hydrogen absorption and desorption amounts decrease by 20% after 100 cycles. In this study, we conducted reverse Monte Carlo modeling on X-ray diffraction patterns and neutron pair distribution functions of the hydrogen-absorbed and desorbed samples of a V$$_{0.10}$$Ti$$_{0.36}$$Cr$$_{0.54}$$ alloy to analyze the variations in the local structure. The local structure surrounding the hydrogen atom in the hydrogen-absorbed phase exhibited minimal changes. In contrast, hydrogen occupied both tetrahedral and octahedral sites of the hydrogen-desorbed phase almost equally during the early cycles; however, the amount of hydrogen occupying the tetrahedral sites increased with the number of cycles.

Ga-exchanged zeolites are promising catalysts for dehydrogenative alkane transformations. Reduced Ga species, such as Ga hydrides and Ga$$^{+}$$ cations, are possible active sites for alkane dehydrogenation based on in situ spectroscopic studies. However, most of the reported studies were conducted at lower temperatures compared with those encountered in actual operating conditions. In this study, the in situ Ga K-edge XANES analysis of Ga-exchanged MFI zeolite was performed under actual operating temperatures and different atmospheres (H$$_{2}$$, He, CO, vacuum, and C$$_{2}$$H$$_{6}$$). The absorption edge appeared at similarly lower energy values than that of Ga$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$ in all atmospheres, whereas the main absorption peak intensity differed depending on the presence or absence of a hydride source in the gas phase. Higher intensities were observed under H$$_{2}$$ and C$$_{2}$$H$$_{6}$$ atmospheres than under CO and vacuum atmospheres.

2021年2月26日にJapan Research Ractor-3(JRR-3)の運転が再開され、2021年7月には利用運転が再開された。JRR-3の運転再開に伴い、TNRFとCNRFと呼ばれる2つのイメージング施設も利用を再開している。本発表では、これら2つの中性子施設の詳細について報告する。

Impact of the ground-state 4${it f}$ symmetry for anisotropic ${it cf}$ hybridization in the heavy-fermion superconductor CeNi$$_{2}$$Ge$$_{2}$$

We report the ground-state symmetry of the Ce 4${it f}$ states in the heavy-fermion superconductor CeNi$$_{2}$$Ge$$_{2}$$, yielding anisotropic ${it cf}$ hybridization between the Ce 4${it f}$ states and conducting electrons. By analyzing linear dichroism in soft X-ray absorption and core-level hard X-ray photoemission spectra, the 4${it f}$ symmetry is determined as $$Sigma$$-type $$Gamma$$$$_{7}$$, promoting predominant hybridization with the conducting electrons originating from the Ge site. The band structures probed by soft X-ray angle-resolved photoemission indicates that the Ge 4${it p}$ components contribute to the band renormalization through the anisotropic hybridization effects, suggesting that the control of the electronic structures of Ge orbital gives an impact to achieve the exotic phenomena in CeNi$$_{2}$$Ge$$_{2}$$.

$$^{29}$$Neからの1中性子除去反応を用いて、$$^{28}$$Neの詳細な$$gamma$$線分光を行った。平行運動量分布の解析に基づき、$$^{28}$$Neの準位構造とスピンパリティを決定し、初めて負のパリティ状態を同定した。測定された断面積と運動量分布から、N=20とN=28のシェルギャップの消失の証拠となる有意なintruder p-wave強度が明らかになった。束縛状態については、弱いf-waveの可能性のある強度が観測された。いくつかの有効相互作用を用いた大規模殻模型計算では、実験的に観測された大きなp-wave強度と小さなf-wave強度は再現されず、Ne同位体に沿った反転の島への遷移の完全な理論的記述への挑戦が続いていることを示している。

Spatial distribution and preferred orientation of crystalline microstructure of lead-bismuth eutectic

To develop a lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) cooled nuclear reactor, phase transition phenomena of LBE are very important. In the solidification of LBE, the crystalline structure is varied with the cooling process. The volumetric expansion of LBE must be clarified for the safety of an LBE cooled nuclear reactor. The time dependence of the volumetric expansion depends on the crystalline microstructure. In this study, the crystalline microstructure of the LBE samples solidified with the different cooling processes was investigated by the neutron Bragg edge imaging technique. Spatially integrated and local microstructure characteristics of LBE samples were analyzed. Characteristics of preferred orientation of LBE microstructure were clarified.

Hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy study of Pt/Y$$_{3}$$Fe$$_{5}$$O$$_{12}$$

スピンゼーベック効果を示す系として注目されているPt/Y$$_{3}$$Fe$$_{5}$$O$$_{12}$$(YIG)系に対し、放射光を用いた硬X線光電子分光(HAXPES)により表面及び界面の電子状態測定を行った。本系ではスピンゼーベック効果のほかに特異な性質を示すことが報告されている。例えば、外部磁場が存在しない状況でもホール効果を発現する。この起源として、YIG中のFe$$^{3+}$$イオンがPt膜に染み出し、磁性を持つ金属間化合物を生成している可能性が提案されている。そこでHAXPESの分析深さを利用し、界面近傍の鉄イオン等の電子状態を測定した。Ptの厚みが2nm, 5nm, 8nm, 10nmの試料を測定したところ、2nmと5nmの試料において鉄イオンの分析を行うことができた。Fe 1s光電子スペクトルからは、鉄イオンが3+のものと金属的な0価に近い2つの状態が存在することが判明し、上記の可能性を支持する結果が得られた。Pt 4fやO 1sスペクトルなども測定しており、詳しい結果は当日報告する。

For the purpose of future visualization of the flow field in superfluid helium-4, clusters of the triplet state excimer $$^{4}$$He$$_{2}$$$$^{ast}$$ are generated along the micro-scale recoil tracks of the neutron-absorption reaction n + $$^{3}$$He $$rightarrow$$ $$^{3}$$T + p. This reaction is induced by neutron irradiation of the $$^{3}$$He fraction contained in natural isotopic abundance liquid helium with neutron beams either from the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex, Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (J-PARC)/Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility or from the Kyoto University Institute for Integrated Radiation and Nuclear Science. These $$^{4}$$He$$_{2}$$$$^{ast}$$ clusters are expected to be ideal tracers of the normal-fluid component in superfluid helium with several advantageous properties. Evidence of the excimer generation is inferred by detection of laser induced fluorescence emitted from the $$^{4}$$He$$_{2}$$$$^{ast}$$ clusters excited by a purpose-built short pulse gain-switched titanium:sapphire (Ti:sa) laser operating at a wavelength of 905 nm. The setup and performance characteristics of the laser system including the Ti:sa and two continuous wave re-pumping lasers are described. Detection at the fluorescence wavelength of 640 nm is performed by using optical bandpass filtered photomultiplier tubes (PMT). Electrical noise in the PMT acquisition traces could successfully be suppressed by post-processing with a simple algorithm. Despite other laser-related backgrounds, the excimer was clearly identified by its fluorescence decay characteristics. Production of the excimer was found to be proportional to the neutron flux, adjusted via insertion of different collimators into the neutron beam. These observations suggest that the apparatus we constructed does function in the expected manner and, therefore, has the potential for groundbreaking turbulence research with superfluid helium.

External dose evaluation based on detailed air dose rate measurements in living environments

避難指示が解除された後に住民が帰還した場合の現実的な外部被ばく線量を推定する方法について考案し、考案した方法に基づき調査を行った。6つの町村に帰還を検討している211人の住民を対象に、2014年度, 2015年度及び2016年度の3年間にわたり調査を実施した。帰還後に想定される生活行動パターンについて対象者へのヒアリングを実施した後、ヒアリング結果に基づき詳細な空間線量率の測定を行った。自宅内の線量率測定ができなかった15名の対象者を除いて、外部被ばく線量の最大値と平均値はそれぞれ4.9mSv/y, 0.86mSv/yとなった。被ばく線量の平均値とばらつきの大きさは避難指示区域の区分により異なるが、全対象者の93.3%において、推定される外部被ばく線量は2mSv/y以下であった。本研究での調査対象者全員の生活行動パターンの解析において、年間の生活時間のうち平均で87%の時間を屋内で過ごすという結果が得られた。さらに、自宅での被ばく線量が年間の被ばく線量の66.8%を占めるという結果が得られた。このことから、被ばく線量を現実的に評価するには自宅内の空間線量率を測定することが重要であるといえる。

We summarized temporal changes in air dose rates and radionuclide deposition densities over five years in the 80 km zone based on large-scale environmental monitoring data obtained continuously after the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) accident. The air dose rates in environments associated with human lives decreased at a considerably faster rate than expected for radioactive decay. The average air dose rate originating from the radiocesium deposited in the 80 km zone was lower than that predicted from radioactive decay by a factor of 2-3 at five years after the accident. The causes of this rapid reduction were discussed quantitatively considering the characteristics of radiocesium migration in the environment.

Temporal change in radiological environments on land after the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident

Massive environmental monitoring has been conducted continuously after the Fukushima accident with different monitoring methods having different features together with migration studies of radiocesium in diverse environments. At three months after the accident, multiple radionuclides were detected at many places; while it was confirmed that radiocesium was most important from the viewpoint of long-term exposures. The air dose rates in environments related to human living have decreased faster than expected from radioactive decay by a factor of 2-3 on average. An empirical model for predicting air dose rate distribution was developed based on statistical analysis of massive car-borne survey data. Some trials were performed to integrate different types of contamination maps to obtain an integrated map of better quantity. Annual external exposure doses for residents who would return to their home were estimated to less than a few mSv as a whole. The environmental data and knowledge have been provided for diverse-spectrum of people in different ways.

Hydrogen desorption spectra from excess vacancy-type defects enhanced by hydrogen in tempered martensitic steel showing quasi-cleavage fracture

低温熱脱離分析法(L-TDS)と陽電子消滅法(PAS)を用い、擬へき開破壊を示す焼戻しマルテンサイト鋼中の種々のトラップサイトの中から、水素存在下塑性ひずみにより導入された格子欠陥からの脱離による水素ピークを分離し同定する試みを行った。水素の存在下において塑性ひずみを付与した鋼試験片をL-TDSにより測定することで、2つのピーク、すなわち元から存在していた脱離と新たな脱離の分離を可能にした。PASの結果からL-TDSによって新たに見出された脱離は空孔型欠陥に対応することが明らかとなった。水素存在下における塑性ひずみは、破面から1.5mm以内に形成される格子欠陥濃度を原子比で約10$$^{-5}$$オーダーまで著しく増大させた。これらの結果は、水素存在下における塑性変形がナノボイド核形成と合体をもたらし、焼戻しマルテンサイト鋼の擬へき開破壊をもたらすことを示している。

Generation of $$^{4}$$He$$_2^{*}$$ clusters via neutron-$$^{3}$$He absorption reaction toward visualization of full velocity field in quantum turbulence

For flow visualization study of quantum turbulence in superfluid $$^{4}$$He, $$^{4}$$He$$_2^{*}$$ excimers are unique tracers which follow only normal-fluid component flow above 1 K. To generate detectable small $$^{4}$$He$$_2^{*}$$ clouds (clusters) required for full-space velocity field measurements, we have adopted a new method based on neutron absorption reaction of $$^{3}$$He impurities in $$^{4}$$He and conducted proof-of-principle experiments. Generation of the $$^{4}$$He$$_2^{*}$$ excimers was detected by laser-induced fluorescence using photomultiplier tubes. The fluorescence was observed to increase proportionally to the neutron flux, suggesting that a sufficient amount of $$^{4}$$He$$_2^{*}$$ excimers were generated by neutrons. We also estimated the number of $$^{4}$$He$$_2^{*}$$ excimers possibly generated by $$gamma$$-rays and found that the relevant contribution was less than 40%. Thus, the majority of the $$^{4}$$He$$_2^{*}$$ excimers was confirmed to be generated via n-$$^{3}$$He absorption reactions.

Visualization of phase distribution in lead-bismuth eutectic during one-dimensional solidification process

Solidification process of lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) is one of the key phenomena to prevent flow channel blockage accident in an LBE-cooled accelerator-driven system. However, the solidification of liquid metal cannot be observed optically and it is difficult to detect noninvasively. In this study, the one-dimensional solidification process of the LBE was visualized by pulsed neutron transmission imaging. Neutrons have higher transmittivity to the LBE than X-ray and neutron transmission spectrum of the LBE sample can be obtained by pulsed neutron imaging technique. The solid and liquid phases of the LBE were identified during the solidification process by the presence or absence of Bragg edge in the measured neutron transmission spectrum, and the transient behavior of the solid-liquid interface could be visualized. In addition, the characteristic spatial distribution of the crystalline structure was found in Bragg-edge transmission image after the solidification.

Manifestation of electron correlation effect in 5$$f$$ states of uranium compounds revealed by 4$$d$$-5$$f$$ resonant photoelectron spectroscopy

In the present study, we have elucidated the nature of the electron correlation effect in uranium compounds by imaging the partial $$mathrm{U}~5f$$ density of states (pDOS) of typical itinerant, localized, and heavy fermion uranium compounds by using the $$mathrm{U}$$ 4$$d$$-5$$f$$ resonant photoemission spectroscopy. Obtained $$mathrm{U}~5$$ pDOS exhibit a systematic trend depending on the physical properties of compounds: Although the coherent peak at the Fermi level can be explained by the band-structure calculation, an incoherent peak emerges on the higher binding energy side ($$lesssim 1~mathrm{eV}$$) in the cases of localized and heavy fermion compounds. The intensity and energy position of the incoherent peak is increased and shifted to a higher binding energy as the localization of the $$mathrm{U}~5$$ state increases. These behaviors are consistent with the prediction of the Mott metal-insulator transition, suggesting that the Hubbard-$$U$$ type mechanism takes an essential role in the $$5f$$ electronic structure of actinide materials.

Characterization of radionuclides in Fukushima is important to determine their origins and current state in the environment. Radionuclides exist as fine particles and are mixed with other constituents. A measurement method with both micro-imaging capability and highly selective element detection is necessary to analyze these particles. We developed such an imaging technique using a time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry and wavelength tunable Ti:Sapphire lasers for resonance ionization of target elements without mass interference. This is called resonant laser ionization sputtered neutral mass spectrometry. The instrument has high lateral resolution and higher ionization selectivity using two-step resonance excitation of Cs with two lasers at different wavelengths. Optimization of the wavelength for resonance ionization using a Cs compound was performed, and a real environmental particle containing radioactive Cs was analyzed. Isotope images of three kinds of Cs were successfully obtained without interfere from Ba isotopes for the first time.

Electronic structure of URu$$_2$$Si$$_2$$ studied by photoelectron spectroscopy (INVITED)

One of the most remarkable properties of actinide compounds is the coexistence of superconductivity and magnetic ordering which has been realized in several strongly-correlated uranium based compounds. In these compounds, both superconductivity and magnetic ordering originate from U 5f states. To understand the origin of the coexistence as well as the mechanism of the superconductivity, it is essential to reveal their U 5f electronic structures. In this presentation, the U 5f electronic structures of heavy Fermion superconductors UPd$$_2$$Al$$_3$$ and URu$$_2$$Si$$_2$$ studied by photoelectron spectroscopy using soft X-rays from SPring-8 BL23SU are presented. For UPd$$_2$$Al$$_3$$, U 4d-5f resonant photoemission experiment was performed, and its partial U 5f spectrum was revealed experimentally. Furthermore, we have applied the three-dimentional ARPES to the hidden order compound URu$$_2$$Si$$_2$$, and revealed its complete 3D electronic structure in the paramagnetic phase. Their electronic structures are discussed based on these results.

Soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism study on UGe$$_{2}$$

In order to investigate the electronic and magnetic states of UGe$$_{2}$$ element-specifically, we have performed soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism experiments at the U N$$_{4,5}$$ and Ge L$$_{2,3}$$ absorption edges. We have detected the XMCD signals at both the U and Ge sites and observed clear hysteresis loops in the ferromagnetic (FM) state at T = 5.5 K. From the branching ratio B, it is found that the occupation number of 5f electrons (n$$^{5f}$$) in UGe$$_{2}$$ is close to 3. In addition, applying the magneto-optical sum rules analysis to the XMCD spectrum at the U N$$_{4,5}$$ edges, the ratio of orbital magnetic moment to the spin magnetic moment (-M$$_{L}$$/M$$_{S}$$) is estimated to be 2.17. These values of B and -M$$_{L}$$/M$$_{S}$$ are comparable compared with the results of other FM superconductors: URhGe and UCoGe

We present a detailed study on the $$4f$$ ground state symmetry of the pressure-induced superconductor CeCu$$_2$$Ge$$_2$$ probed by soft X-ray absorption and hard X-ray photoemission spectroscopy. The revised Ce $$4f$$ ground states are determined as $$|{Gamma_7}rangle=sqrt{0.45}|{J_{z}=pm frac{5}{2}}rangle - sqrt{0.55}|{mp frac{3}{2}}rangle$$ with $$Sigmamathchar`-{rm type}$$ in-plane rotational symmetry. This gives an in-plane magnetic moment consistent with the antiferromagnetic moment as reported in neutron measurements. Since the in-plane symmetry is the same as that for the superconductor CeCu$$_2$$Si$$_2$$, we propose that the charge distribution along the $$c$$-axis plays an essential role in driving the system into a superconducting phase.

Element-specific observation of the ferromagnetic ordering process in UCoAl via soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism

We have performed soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) experiments on the itinerant-electron metamagnet UCoAl at the U 4$$d$$-5$$f$$ ($$N_mathrm{4, 5}$$) and Co 2$$p$$-3$$d$$ ($$L_mathrm{2, 3}$$) absorption edges in order to investigate the magnetic properties of the U 5$$f$$ and Co 3$$d$$ electrons separately. From the line shape of the XMCD spectrum, it is deduced that the orbital magnetic moment of the Co 3$$d$$ electrons is unusually large. Through the systematic temperature ($$T$$)- and magnetic field ($$H$$)-dependent XMCD measurements, we have obtained two types of the magnetization curve as a function of $$H$$ and $$T$$ (M-H curve and M-T curve, respectively). The metamagnetic transition from a paramagnetic state to a field-induced ferromagnetic state was observed clearly under 15 K at $$H_mathrm{M}$$. The value of the $$H_mathrm{M}$$ and its $$T$$-dependence agree well between the U and Co sites, and the bulk magnetization. Whereas, we have discovered the remarkable differences in the M-H and M-T curves between the U and Co sites. The present findings show clearly that the role of the Co 3$$d$$ electrons should be considered more carefully in order to understand the origin of the magnetic ordering in UCoAl.
