Experimental investigation on local flow structures of upward cap-bubbly flows in a vertical large-size square channel

Taking the importance of gas-liquid two-phase flows in large square channels for advanced nuclear reactors, such as ESBWR, we experimented with upward cap-bubbly flows in a large square channel. Local void fractions, axial gas velocities, and interfacial area concentrations for two bubble-size groups were measured at three axial locations. Based on the database, cap-bubbly flow characteristics in a large square channel were understood. The existing drift-flux and interfacial area concentration correlations were validated. The void fraction covariances were obtained and used to validate their existing correlations.

Multi-dimensional characteristics of upward bubbly flows in a vertical large-size square channel

An experiment for upward bubbly flows was conducted in a large square channel. The local void fraction, axial gas velocity, axial liquid velocity, interfacial area concentration, and Sauter mean diameter were measured at three axial locations. Based on the measurement data, the flow characteristics through flow development were investigated. The drift-flux parameters were directly determined from the local measurement data through their definitions. It was found that the distribution parameters and the void fractions could be fairly reproduced by the existing correlations for large circular pipes. Furthermore, the interfacial area concentrations could be predicted by existing correlations with reasonable accuracy.

静水圧や化学圧力は、結晶構造を変化させる効率的な刺激であり、材料科学において電気的、磁気的特性のチューニングによく利用されている。しかし、化学圧力は定量化が困難であり、これら両者の定量的な対応関係はまだよくわかっていない。本研究では、負の熱膨張(NTE)を持つ永久磁石の候補である金属間化合物を調べた。放射光X線その場観察により、AlをドープしたHo$$_2$$Fe$$_{17}$$に負の化学圧力があることを明らかにし、単位セル体積の温度・圧力依存性を用いそれを定量的に評価した。また、磁化測定と中性子回折測定を組み合わせることで、磁気秩序に対する化学圧力と静水圧の違いを比較した。興味深いことに、圧力はNTEの抑制と増強を制御するために使用することができた。電子状態計算から、圧力がFermiレベル(EF)に対する主要バンドの上部に影響を与えたことを示しており、これは磁気安定性に影響を与え、それが磁気とNTEを調節する上で重要な役割を果たしていることがわかった。本研究は、圧力の影響を理解し、それを利用して機能性材料の特性を制御する良い例を示している。

Evidence for strong correlations at finite temperatures in the dimerized magnet Na$$_{2}$$Cu$$_{2}$$TeO$$_{6}$$

Dimerized magnets forming alternating Heisenberg chains exhibit quantum coherence and entanglement and thus can find potential applications in quantum information and computation. However, magnetic systems typically undergo thermal decoherence at finite temperatures. Here, we show inelastic neutron scattering results on an alternating antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic chain compound Na$$_{2}$$Cu$$_{2}$$TeO$$_{6}$$ that the excited quasiparticles can counter thermal decoherence and maintain strong correlations at elevated temperatures. At low temperatures, we observe clear dispersive singlet-triplet excitations arising from the dimers formed along the crystalline $$b$$-axis. The excitation gap is of $$sim$$18 meV and the bandwidth is about half of the gap. The band top energy has a weak modulation along the [100] direction, indicative of a small interchain coupling. The gap increases while the bandwidth decreases with increasing temperature, leading to a strong reduction in the available phase space for the triplons. As a result, the Lorentzian-type energy broadening becomes highly asymmetric as the temperature is raised. These results are associated with a strongly correlated state resulting from hard-core constraint and quasiparticle interactions. We consider these results to be not only evidence for strong correlations at finite temperatures in Na$$_{2}$$Cu$$_{2}$$TeO$$_{6}$$, but also for the universality of the strongly correlated state in a broad range of quantum magnetic systems.

The $$^{59}$$Fe(n,$$gamma$$)$$^{60}$$Fe cross section from the surrogate ratio method and its effect on the $$^{60}$$Fe nucleosynthesis

The long-lived $$^{60}$$Fe (with a half-life of 2.62 Myr) is a crucial diagnostic of active nucleosynthesis in the Milky Way galaxy and in supernovae near the solar system. The neutron-capture reaction $$^{59}$$Fe(n,$$gamma$$)$$^{60}$$Fe on $$^{59}$$Fe (half-life=44.5 days) is the key reaction for the production of $$^{60}$$Fe in massive stars. This reaction cross section has been previously constrained by the Coulomb dissociation experiment, which offered partial constraint on the E1 $$gamma$$-ray strength function but a negligible constraint on the M1 and E2 components. In this work, for the first time, we use the surrogate ratio method to experimentally determine the $$^{59}$$Fe(n,$$gamma$$)$$^{60}$$Fe cross sections in which all the components are included. We derived a Maxwellian-averaged cross section of 27.5$$pm$$3.5 mb at $$kT$$ = 30 keV and 13.4$$pm$$1.7 mb at $$kT$$ = 90 keV, roughly 10%-20% higher than previous estimates. We analyzed the impact of our new reaction rates in nucleosynthesis models of massive stars and found that uncertainties in the production of $$^{60}$$Fe from the $$^{59}$$Fe(n,$$gamma$$)$$^{60}$$Fe rate are at most 25$$%$$. We conclude that stellar physics uncertainties now play a major role in the accurate evaluation of the stellar production of $$^{60}$$Fe.

Flow regime and void fraction predictions in vertical rod bundle flow channels

This paper studies the flow regimes, their transitions and the drift-flux correlations in upward gas-liquid two-phase flows in vertical rod bundle flow channels. The flows are classified into 5 flow regimes, namely, bubbly, finely dispersed bubbly, cap-bubbly, churn and annular flows according to their different flow characteristics. Transition criteria between the flow regimes are proposed mechanistically. Those criteria can correctly predict 83% of the existing experimental observation of the flow regime. The drift-flux correlations for the distribution parameter and the drift velocity are also improved. The void fractions predicted by those correlations are compared with the existing experimental data, showing satisfactory agreement with mean relative error of 8%.

This paper presents a database of local flow parameters for upward adiabatic air-water two-phase flows in a vertical 6$$times$$6 rod bundle flow channel. The local void fraction, interfacial area concentration (IAC), bubble diameter and bubble velocity vector were measured by using a four-sensor optical probe. Based on an existing state-of-the-art four-sensor probe methodology with the characteristic to count small bubbles, IAC in this study was derived more reliably than those in the existing studies. In addition, bubble velocity vector could be measured by the methodology. Based on this database, flow characteristics were investigated. The area-averaged void fraction and IAC were compared with the predictions from the drift-flux model and the IAC correlations, respectively. The applicability of those to the rod bundle flow channel was evaluated.

Coexistence of ferromagnetic and stripe-type antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations in YFe$$_{2}$$Ge$$_{2}$$

We report neutron scattering measurements of single-crystalline YFe$$_{2}$$Ge$$_{2}$$ in the normal state, which has the same crystal structure as the 122 family of iron pnictide superconductors. YFe$$_{2}$$Ge$$_{2}$$ does not exhibit long-range magnetic order but exhibits strong spin fluctuations. Like the iron pnictides, YFe$$_{2}$$Ge$$_{2}$$ displays anisotropic stripe-type antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations at ($$pi, 0, pi$$). More interesting, however, is the observation of strong spin fluctuations at the in-plane ferromagnetic wave vector ($$0, 0, pi$$). These ferromagnetic spin fluctuations are isotropic in the ($$H, K$$) plane, whose intensity exceeds that of stripe spin fluctuations. Both the ferromagnetic and stripe spin fluctuations remain gapless down to the lowest measured energies. Our results naturally explain the absence of magnetic order in YFe$$_{2}$$Ge$$_{2}$$ and also imply that the ferromagnetic correlations may be a key ingredient for iron-based materials.

Two phase flows in large-diameter channels are important to efficiently and safely transfer mass and energy in a wide variety of applications including nuclear power plants. Two-phase flows in vertical large-diameter channels, however, show much more complex multi-dimensional nature than those in small diameter channels. Various constitutive equations are required to mathematically close the model to predict two-phase flows with two-fluid model. Validations of the constitutive equations require extensive experiment effort. This paper summarizes the recent experimental studies on two-phase flows in vertical large-diameter channels, which includes measuring technique and available databases. Then, a comprehensive review of constitutive equations is provided covering flow regime transition criteria, drift-flux correlations, interfacial area concentration correlations and one- and two-group interfacial area transport equation(s), with discussions on typical characteristics of large-diameter channel flows. Recent 1D numerical simulations of large-diameter channel flows is reviewed too. Finally, future research directions are suggested.

主に4センサープローブを用いて、鉛直大口径正方形管内における上昇気泡流に関する実験的研究を実施した。流れ方向3断面における、局所界面積濃度、ボイド率、3次元気泡速度、気泡径を計測した。界面積輸送方程式やその中の気泡合体分裂モデルは、二相流における界面積濃度の予測に多用されてきたものの、主に円管や小口径管の二相流実験から構築されており、大口径正方形管に対する適応性の検証がされていない。そこで本研究では、大口径正方形管で取得したデータベースを用いて、既存の1次元1グループ界面積輸送方程式の気泡合体分裂モデルの大口径正方形管への適応性を評価した。最良のモデルに基づく予測と実験結果との誤差は25%であることを示した。

4センサープローブを用いて、鉛直大口径正方形ダクト内における上向き気泡流の実験的研究を行った。流れ方向3断面における局所界面積濃度、3次元気泡速度ベクトルと気泡径等を計測した。取得したボイド率、局所界面積濃度、3次元気泡速度ベクトルと気泡径等により、流れの挙動に関する有益な情報を提供できるだけでなく、界面積濃度輸送方程式内のソースとシンク項の機構論的モデルの高度化にとって重要なデータベースとなる。

Multi-dimensional gas-liquid two-phase flow in vertical large-diameter channels

Large-diameter (D) channels are extensively used to increase the mass, momentum and heat transport capability of working fluid. Comparing with small-D pipes, two-phase flows in large-D channels show quite different and more complicated flow characteristics, since much larger cap bubbles can exist and interfacial instability prevents the cap bubbles from forming a large stable Taylor bubble. Flow regimes and radial void fraction profiles are also different from those in small-D pipes especially in cap/slug flow regime. The relative velocities between phases are greatly increased. This paper reviews recent progresses in the researches on two-phase flows in large-D channels. The state-of-the-art tool of four-sensor probe may enable classification of two-group bubbles by the measurement of bubble diameter instead of bubble chord length. Databases and most of the updated constitutive equations that cover flow regime transition criteria, drift-flux correlations, interfacial area concentration (IAC) correlations and one- and two-group interfacial area transport equation(s) are summarized and analyzed. Typical multi-dimensional characteristics of flows in large-D channels are presented and their one-dimensional numerical simulations are reviewed. Finally the future research directions are suggested.

The relative $$gamma$$-decay probability ratios of the neutron resonance states in $$^{94}$$Zr and $$^{92}$$Zr populated via two neutron transfer reactions, $$^{92}$$Zr($$^{18}$$O,$$^{16}$$O)$$^{94}$$Zr and $$^{90}$$Zr($$^{18}$$O,$$^{16}$$O)$$^{92}$$Zr, have been measured to test the validity of the surrogate ratio method (SRM) in determining the (n,$$gamma$$) reaction cross section. The cross sections of the $$^{93}$$Zr(n,$$gamma$$)$$^{94}$$Zr reaction are derived from the experimentally obtained ratios and the cross sections of the $$^{91}$$Zr(n,$$gamma$$)$$^{92}$$Zr reaction in the equivalent neutron energy range of $$E_{rm n}$$ = 0 - 8 MeV. The deduced cross sections of $$^{93}$$Zr(n,$$gamma$$)$$^{94}$$Zr reaction agree with the directly measured ones in the low-energy region, and with the evaluated ENDF/B-VII.1 data at higher energies of $$E_{rm n} >$$ 3 MeV. The agreement supports the concept of the SRM method to indirectly determine the (n,$$gamma$$) reaction cross sections.

4センサープローブを用いて、鉛直大口径正方形管内の上昇気液二相流の局所構造を計測した。球形と非球形気泡を区別する4センサープローブの計測手法を適用し、局所3次元気泡速度ベクトル、気泡径と界面積濃度を計測した。液相流量が低い時と高い時、局所ボイド率と界面積濃度はそれぞれ中心ピークと壁ピークの分布を示した。断面内における横方向気泡速度は、断面の対称的な8分の1三角領域内を循環する2次流れの存在を示し、その大きさは液相速度の上昇とともに増加した。本データに対して、既存ドリフトフラックスモデルや界面積濃度の相関式の比較を行い、適応性を検証した。

磁性元素を添加したトポロジカル絶縁体は、量子異常ホール効果や無散逸伝導などの魅力的な現象の発現が予言され、低消費電力スピンデバイスの開発につながっていくものと期待されている。既に、いくつかの磁性添加トポロジカル絶縁体で長距離磁気秩序が確認されている。しかし、量子異常ホール効果の発現は、極低温におけるCrを添加した(Sb,Bi)$$_{2}$$Te$$_{3}$$系に限られており、強磁性の微視的な起源はほとんど分かっていない。そこで、今回、X線磁気円二色性実験による元素選択的研究を行うことにより、本物質系の強磁性は、母体の正孔キャリアーを媒介としたものであり、Crの3d電子とSbやTeのp電子の相互作用が極めて重要であることを明らかにした。この結果は、異常量子ホール素子の実現に向けても重要である。

Local measurements of 3-D bubble velocity vector, bubble diameter and interfacial area concentration in a vertical large diameter square duct

新型沸騰水型原子炉ESBWRの炉心上部のチムニーなど大口径の垂直矩形流路では、気液2相流の液相速度勾配や気泡分布は大口径円管と異なる可能性がある。一方、大口径の矩形流路内については、ボイド率や液相速度、気泡径などの分布に関する報告はあるが、3次元気泡速度や界面積濃度等の流れ構造を詳細に示すパラメータについては報告がなされていない。本研究では、安全解析に用いる流動モデルの信頼性向上等に資するため、それらの詳細計測を行った。実験では、1辺が100mmの正方形断面テスト部を用いて鉛直上昇流のボイド率、界面積濃度、気泡径や3次元気泡速度など主要パラメータの断面内分布を4センサ光プローブを用いて計測し、液流量の増加に伴って、ボイド率と界面積濃度の分布が壁面ピークから管中心ピークに変化することや、主流方向の気泡速度が管中心ピーク分布を持つ結果を得た。更に、断面内の気泡速度分布の結果から、断面内循環流が対称8分の1三角形領域に存在し、液流量に伴って速度が増加することを明らかにした。

Signature splitting inversion and backbending in $$^{80}$$Rb

High-spin states of $$^{80}$$Rb are studied via the fusion-evaporation reactions $$^{65}$$Cu+$$^{19}$$F, $$^{66}$$Zn+$$^{18}$$O, and $$^{68}$$Zn+$$^{16}$$O with the beam energies of 75 MeV, 76 MeV, and 80 MeV, respectively. Twenty-three states with twenty-eight $$gamma$$ transitions are added to the previously proposed level scheme, where the second negative-parity band is significantly pushed up to spins of 22$$^-$$ and 15$$^-$$ and two sidebands are built on the known first negative-parity band. Two successive band crossings with frequencies 0.51 MeV and 0.61 MeV in the $$alpha$$ = 0 branch as well as another one in the $$alpha$$ =1 branch of the second negative-parity band are observed. Signature inversions occur in the positive-parity and first negative-parity bands at the spins of 11$$hbar$$ and 16$$hbar$$, respectively. The signature splitting is seen obviously in the second negative-parity band, but the signature inversion is not observed. It is also found that the structure of the two negative-parity bands is similar to that of its isotone $$^{82}$$Y. Signature inversion in the positive-parity yrast band with configuration $$pi$$g9/2 $$otimes$$ $$nu$$g9/2 in this nucleus is discussed using the projected shell model.

New four-sensor probe theory for multi-dimensional two-phase flow measurement

A complete four-sensor probe measurement theory was newly developed to obtain local instantaneous 3D bubble velocity vector, local instantaneous bubble diameter and local instantaneous interfacial normal unit vector and local time-averaged interfacial area concentration (IAC) in a multi-dimensional two-phase flow by assuming the bubbles to be spherical. The bubbles are classified into spherical and non-spherical bubbles by introduction of a bubble deviation coefficient from a spherical shape. The measured results were checked against such parameters as void fraction, superficial gas velocity, bubble diameter and IAC and confirmed the excellent measurement capability of the developed theory.

鉄系超伝導体PrFeAsO$$_{0.7}$$の角度分解光電子分光の研究を行い、フェルミ準位付近のフェルミ面とバンド分散を調べた。へき開表面の極性により激しくホールドープされた電子状態が観測された。しかしながら、われわれはバンド幅を約2.5倍減少させ化学ポテンシャルを70meV下げるとLDAの計算と合うことを見いだした。これまでに報告されているLaFePOと比較することで、$$d$$$$_{3z^{2}-r^{2}}$$$$yz,zx$$によるバンドのエネルギー位置が両者で非常に大きく異なることがわかった。このことはLDA計算で予言されているように異なるニクトゲン高さに起因する。
