Journal of Applied Crystallography, 56(6), p.1802 - 1812, 2023/12

The contrast-variation technique in neutron scattering experiments plays a pivotal role in distinguishing partial structures within multi-component complexes, facilitating the elucidation of distinct sample constituents. This differentiation is achieved using different isotopes, namely hydrogen and deuterium, which possess varying neutron scattering characteristics. This study presents a novel vapor generator designed for neutron scattering experiments, enabling continuous control of the D$$_2$$O/H$$_2$$O ratio of the vapor. This feature is especially useful for contrast-variation studies. The generator features two saturators and four mass flow controllers, allowing for the rapid and independent generation of D$$_2$$O/H$$_2$$O vapors. Additionally, the incorporation of the two-temperature method ensures accurate dew point control within a margin of $$pm$$0.2$$^{circ}$$Cdp. This setup proves useful for conducting time-resolved experiments and can accelerate research on functional polymers, such as polymer electrolyte membranes for fuel cells, where water potential assumes critical importance.

そこで、この課題を解決するために、RAPID(Risk Assessment with Plant Interactive Dynamics)を用いて、熱水力解析と外部事象のシミュレーションを組み合わせた手法を提案した。

For realizing a highly reliable fracture limit evaluation of fuel cladding tubes during loss-of-coolant accidents (LOCAs) in light-water reactors, we developed a method to quantify the fracture limit uncertainty of high-burnup advanced fuel cladding tubes. This method employs a hierarchical Bayesian model that can quantify uncertainty even with limited experimental data. The fracture limit uncertainty was quantified as a probability using the amount of oxidation (Equivalent cladding reacted: ECR) and the initial hydrogen concentration (the hydrogen concentration in the fuel cladding tubes before the LOCA-simulated tests) as explanatory variables. We divided the regression coefficients of this model into a hierarchical structure with an overall average term common to all types of fuel cladding tubes and a term representing differences among various types of fuel cladding tubes. This hierarchical structure enabled us to quantify the fracture limit uncertainty through the effective use of prior knowledge and data, even for high-burnup advanced fuel cladding tubes with a small number of data points. The fracture limits representing a 5% fracture probability with 95% confidence of the high-burnup advanced fuel cladding tubes evaluated by the hierarchical Bayesian model were higher than 15% ECR for the initial hydrogen concentrations of up to 700-900 wtppm and restraint loads below 535 N. These fracture limits were comparable to the limit of the unirradiated Zircaloy-4 cladding tube, indicating that the burnup extension and use of the advanced fuel cladding tubes do not significantly lower the fracture limit of fuel cladding tubes. Further, we proposed a method to reduce the fracture limit uncertainty by using non-binary data, instead of the binary data, depending on the condition of the fuel cladding tube specimens after performing the LOCA-simulated test, thereby increasing the amount of information in the data.

For a sodium-cooled fast reactor, the capability for stable cooling and avoiding re-criticality on the debris bed is essential for achieving in-vessel retention when severe accidents occur. However, an unexploited uncertainty still existed regarding the compound effect of the heterogeneous configuration and dynamic particle redistribution for the debris bed's criticality and cooling safety assessment. Therefore, this research aims to develop a numerical tool for investigating the effects of the different transformations of the heterogeneous configurations on the debris bed's criticality/cooling assessment. Based on the newly proposed methodology in this research, via integrating the Discrete Element Method (DEM) with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Monte-Carlo-based Neutronics (MCN), the coupled CFD-DEM-MCN solver was constructed with the originally created interface to integrate two existing codes. The effects of the different bed configurations' transformations on the bed safety assessments were also quantitively confirmed, indicating that the effect of the particle-centralized fissile material had the dominant negative effect on the safety margin of avoiding re-criticality and particle re-melting accidents and had a more evident impact than the net bed-centralized effect. This coupled solver can serve to further assess the debris bed's safety via a multi-physics simulation approach, leading to safer SFR design concepts.

TRACER (Transport phenomena of Radionuclides for Accident Consequence Evaluation of Reactor)が開発されている。

To realize a more reliable safety evaluation of loss-of-coolant accidents (LOCAs) in light-water-reactors, we developed a quantification method of the fracture limit uncertainty of high-burnup advanced fuel cladding tubes using a hierarchical Bayes model that can quantify uncertainty even when experimental data are limited. The fracture limit uncertainty was quantified as a probability using the amount of oxidation and the initial hydrogen concentration (the hydrogen concentration in fuel cladding tubes before the LOCA-simulated tests) as explanatory variables. The hierarchical Bayes model was developed by dividing the regression coefficients into a hierarchical structure with an overall average term common to all types of fuel cladding tubes and a term representing differences between types of fuel cladding tubes. Using the developed model, we showed that the fracture limits of the high-burnup advanced fuel cladding tubes tended to be on average equal to or higher than that of an unirradiated conventional fuel cladding tube. Further, we proposed a method to reduce the fracture limit uncertainty by using non-binary data depending on the condition of the fuel cladding tube specimens after the LOCA-simulated test instead of the binary data, thereby increasing the amount of information in each data.

The paper describes progress of an international collaborative research in the area of SFR sodium fire modeling between the United States and Japan under the framework of the Civil Nuclear Energy Research and Development Working Group (CNWG). In this collaboration between Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) and Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), the validation basis for and modeling capabilities of sodium spray and pool fires in MELCOR of SNL and SPHINCS of JAEA are being enhanced. This study documents MELCOR and SPHINCS sodium pool fire model validation exercises against the JAEA's sodium pool fire experiments, F7-1 and F7-2. The proposed enhancement of the sodium pool fire models in MELCOR through addition of thermal hydraulic and sodium spreading models that enable a better representation of experimental results is also described.

Proceedings of 19th International Topical Meeting on Nuclear Reactor Thermal Hydraulics (NURETH-19) (Internet), 13 Pages, 2022/03

The SPECTRA code has been developed as an integrated safety analysis tool for sodium-cooled fast reactors (SFRs). In this study, the capability of SPECTRA is enhanced by establishing a sodium pool and floor concrete module commonly used in individual physical modules. This paper describes the framework of modelling for the mass and heat transfer in the sodium pool and the floor concrete. Considering concrete ablation due to sodium and debris, bottom of the sodium pool changes during event progression. This change in material composition in certain position is modeled by volume and mass fraction of each component. A simple convection model for the pool is implemented to ensure the conservation of heat and mass. This model is tested through the verification analysis in comparison with the existing model. As the result, it is confirmed the behavior of pool spreading and concrete ablation can be simulated by this module correctly.

テスト解析を実施し、本粒子法の結果をSERAPHIM(Na-水反応と非圧縮性を考慮した多次元多相流についての機構論的解析コード)の結果と比較した。

Experiments were conducted to explore the droplet generation process when an ascending liquid spray impacts on a downward-facing solid surface. The droplets generated in the present experiments were classified into the two types: one is the splashing droplets generated by the impacts of droplets in spray and the other is the falling droplets produced from a liquid film formed on the solid surface. The falling droplets were further classified to the first falling droplets and the satellite droplets. It was found that the ratio of the splashing droplets increases with an increase in the impact Weber number. The size of the splashing droplets was in the same order with the impacting droplets in spray. On the other hand, the size of the falling droplets was inversely proportional to their order. Using the experimental data, dimensionless correlations were developed for the rates and sizes of the splashing and falling droplets.
