The JAERI FEL has recently discovered the new FEL lasing of 255fs ultra fast pulse, 6-9% high-efficiency, one gigawatt high peak power, a few kilowatts average power, and wide tunability of medium and far infrared wavelength regions at the same time. Using the new lasing and energy-recovery linac technology, we could extend a more powerful and more efficient free-electron laser (FEL) than 10kW and 25%, respectively, for nuclear industry, pharmacy, medical, defense, shipbuilding, semiconductor industry, chemical industries, environmental sciences, space-debris, power beaming and so on. In order to realize such a tunable, highly-efficient, high average power, high peak power and ultra-short pulse FEL, we need the efficient and powerful FEL driven by the JAERI compact, stand-alone and zero boil-off super-conducting RF linac with an energy-recovery geometry. Our discussions on the FEL will cover the application of non-thermal peeling, cutting, and drilling to decommission the nuclear power plants, and to prevent stress-corrosion cracking in nuclear industry and roadmap for the industrial FELs, the JAERI compact, stand-alone and zero-boil-off cryostat concept and operational experience, the new, highly-efficient, high-power, and ultra fast pulse lasing mode, and the energy-recovery geometry.

Measurements of power profile in TRACY supercritical experiment by detecting epithermal neutrons

We have tried to measure the power profile in the TRACY supercritical experiment with high accuracy by detecting epithermal neutrons. In order to measure the epithermal neutrons, a cadmium covered $$^{235}$$U fission chamber was used, and polyethylene, a neutron moderator, was set inside the cadmium to enhance the neutron detection efficiency. In addition, a lead shield was used to reduce the noise current due to gamma-rays. The measured results were compared with the ones using a thermal neutron detector, and it was found that the time delay effect in the thermal neutron detection, which was caused by the flight time of neutrons to reach the detector, distorted the power profile and reduced its peak value. The reduction ratio of peak power was about 4% for the relatively slow power change with the inserted reactivity of 1.5$, but it became over than 40% for the rapid power change with the reactivity of about 3$.

The nuclear characteristics of TRACY, such as the criticality, the $$beta$$$$_{eff}$$/$$Lambda$$ ratio, the peak power, the energy of pulse, and the total energy, have been evaluated using the experimental data. TRACY is a supercritical reactor fueled with low-enriched uranyl nitrate aqueous solution to simulate criticality accidents in a fuel processing facility, such as a spent-fuel reprocessing plant. In this evaluation, the availability of criticality calculation and the models to evaluate the power and energy have been studied.

In order to realize a tunable, highly-efficient, high average power, high peak power and ultra-short pulse free-electron laser(FEL) as a supertool [1]of the 21st for all , the JAERI FEL group and I have developed an industrial FEL driven by a compact, stand-alone and zero-boil-off super-conducting rf linac[2] with an energy-recovery geometry as a conceptual design. Our discussions on the supertool will cover market-requirements for the industrial FELs, some answers from the JAERI compact, stand-alone and zero-boil-off cryostat concept and operational experience over these 8 years, our discovery of the new, highly-efficient, high-power, and ultra-short pulse lasing mode[3], and the energy-recovery geometry.

For a precise assessment of the distribution of radioactive cesium dispersed over a wide area, one must accurately evaluate the background radiation due to natural radionuclides. We have developed a new method that accurately evaluates the spatial distribution of the background radiation in areas contaminated by radioactive cesium. Using the data from aerial monitoring, we analyzed such distribution while excluding the effect of radioactive cesium. This method made it possible to evaluate not only the precipitation of radioactive cesium with quite well accuracy, but also the spatial distribution of the natural radionuclides all over Japan.

Development of criticality risk evaluation method for fuel debris in Fukushima-Daiichi NPS

After the accident of Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Station, there is still damaged nuclear fuel in the reactor buildings, which is called fuel debris and contains an amount of fissile materials more than the minimum criticality amount. A new method, which has been developed by Japan Atomic Energy Agency to technically support the Nuclear Regulatory Authority in Japan, NRA, is designed to estimate criticality risk based on a probability distribution of k-eff due to uncertainty of composition and geometry of fuel debris, which method will provide risk information for the criticality safety of fuel debris. A trial analysis by using the procedure defined in the method shows that some events which can initiate criticality can be supposed to happen during maintenance period, and that analysis also indicates countermeasures should be considered as soon as possible in order to reduce criticality risk for public and workers.
