Skyrmion-generated spinmotive forces in inversion broken ferromagnets

山根 結太*; 家田 淳一

Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials, 491, p.165550_1 - 165550_5, 2019/12

We present an analytical study on the spinmotive force (SMF) generated by translational motion of magnetic skyrmion. A SMF refers to an electrical voltage induced by dynamical magnetic textures, which reflects the spatiotemporal variation of the magnetization. The dynamics of a skyrmion thus can be detected by a SMF measurement, which may play an important role in future skyrmion-based technologies. We find the dependence of the SMF on skyrmion structure (e.g., skyrmion or anti-skyrmion, Neel or Bloch type, and the polarity of the skyrmion core) and Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings (SOCs). To this end, we derive explicit formulae for the spin-dependent electric fields originating from the two SOCs. Our findings offer a comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon and an estimation of the electrical voltage signal associated with a moving skyrmion for a given experiment.

The generation of the spinmotive force (SMF) requires the temporal and spatial variations of the magnetic moments. We explore an approach to satisfy this requirement by creating asymmetry in a thin film structure along the out-of-plane direction, through the use of an exchange-coupled $$L$$1$$_{0}$$-FePt / Ni$$_{81}$$Fe$$_{19}$$ bilayer element. As the spin wave is excited by rf magnetic field, a continuous dc voltage signal along the out-of-plane direction of the bilayer element appears. The sign of the voltage signal and its microwave power dependency agree with the theoretical framework of the SMF. The corresponding spin wave modes are revealed by carrying out the micromagnetic simulation. Our results demonstrate the generation of the SMF using a vertically structured element in addition to previously reported in-plane structured devices.

Current-induced modulation of coercive field in the ferromagnetic oxide SrRuO$$_{3}$$

We investigated the coercive field $$H_{c}$$ for Domain Wall (DW) motion as a function of the current $$I$$ in the ferromagnetic oxide SrRuO$$_{3}$$, a model system with narrow DWs for fabricating high-density spintronics devices. The DW is moved by $$I$$ in the direction of the current, and $$H_{c}$$ is modulated linearly in $$I$$. This linear relationship is consistent with an effective magnetic field $$H_{eff}$$ driving the DW. The direction of DW motion and the magnitude of $$H_{eff}$$ are well described by a model based on the field-like torque arising from the spin relaxation of conduction electrons in the DW.

We overview the recent theoretical development on spin-transfer torque in antiferromagnetic nanostructures and related subjects. As antiferromagnetic materials are generating more attention lately due to their potential to play pivotal roles in spintronics applications, demands are rising for reliable methods to control and detect antiferromagnetic textures and their dynamics. While antiferromagnets are largely insensitive to external magnetic fields in general, electrical means are proving to be capable of offering promising ways to access the antiferromagnetic dynamics. We discuss in this article the possibility of manipulation and observation of dynamical antiferromagnetic textures by electrical current and voltage.

Magnetic anisotropy in an antiferromagnet (AFM) with inversion symmetry breaking (ISB) is investigated. The magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) resulting from the Rashba spin-orbit and $$s$$-$$d$$ type exchange interactions is determined for two different models of AFMs. The global ISB model, representing the effect of a surface, an interface, or a gating electric field, results in an easy-plane magnetic anisotropy. In contrast, for a local ISB model, i.e., for a noncentrosymmetric AFM, perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) arises. Both results differ from the ferromagnetic case, in which the result for PMA depends on the band structure and dimensionality. These MAE contributions play a key role in determining the direction of the N$'{e}$el order parameter in antiferromagnetic nanostructures, and reflect the possibility of electrical-field control of the N$'{e}$el vector.

We theoretically demonstrate dc and ac electric voltage generation due spinmotive forces originating from domain wall motion and magnetic resonance, respectively, in two-sublattice antiferromagnets. Our theory accounts for the canting between the sublattice magnetizations, the nonadiabatic electron spin dynamics, and the Rashba spin-orbit coupling. We predict that the spinmotive force can of the order of millivolt, several orders larger than their ferromagnetic counterparts. This work suggests a new way to observe and explore the dynamics of antiferromagnetic textures by electrical means.

Magnetohydrodynamic generation is the conversion of fluid kinetic energy into electricity. Such conversion, which has been applied to various types of electric power generation, is driven by the Lorentz force acting on charged particles and thus a magnetic field is necessary. On the other hand, recent studies of spintronics have revealed the similarity between the function of a magnetic field and that of spin-orbit interactions in condensed matter. This suggests the existence of an undiscovered route to realize the conversion of fluid dynamics into electricity without using magnetic fields. Here we show electric voltage generation from fluid dynamics free from magnetic fields; we excited liquid-metal flows in a narrow channel and observed longitudinal voltage generation in the liquid. This voltage has nothing to do with electrification or thermoelectric effects, but turned out to follow a universal scaling rule based on a spin-mediated scenario. The result shows that the observed voltage is caused by spin-current generation from a fluid motion: spin hydrodynamic generation. The observed phenomenon allows us to make mechanical spin-current and electric generators, opening a door to fluid spintronics.

We report the observation of the Barnett effect in paramagnetic states by mechanically rotating gadolinium (Gd) metal with a rotational frequency of up to 1.5 kHz above the Curie temperature. An in situ magnetic measurement setup comprising a high-speed rotational system and a fluxgate magnetic sensor was developed for the measurement. Temperature dependence of the observed magnetization follows that of paramagnetic susceptibility, indicating that any emergent magnetic field is proportional to the rotational frequency and is independent of temperature. From the proportionality constant of the emergent field, the gyromagnetic ratio of Gd is calculated to be -29 $$pm$$ 5 GHz/T. This study revisits the primordial issue of magnetism with modern technologies to shed new light on the fundamental spin-rotation coupling.

We focus the recent results on spin-current generation from mechanical motion such as rigid rotation and elastic deformations. Spin transport theory in accelerating frames is constructed by using the low energy expansion of the generally covariant Dirac equation. Related issues on spin-manipulation by mechanical rotation are also discussed.

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements for a nuclear spin 1/2 system in an external magnet field and mechanical rotation in kHz range are reported. NMR signals are measured by the synchronous rotation of a sample and a detector coil under the condition that the rotation axis is perpendicular to the external field. NMR line splits into two despite the system having a single Zeeman level separation. We analytically show that the splitting originates in the nuclear spin motion under mechanical rotation, and is determined by only the angular velocity of the rotation without any material parameters.

We report the observation of the rotational Doppler effect using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). We have developed a coil-spinning technique that enables measurements by rotating a detector and fixing a sample. We found that the rotational Doppler effect gives rise to NMR frequency shifts equal to the rotation frequency. We formulate the rotational Doppler effect and the Barnett field using a vector model for the nuclear magnetic moment. This formulation reveals that, with just the sample rotating, both effects cancel each other, thereby explaining the absence of an NMR frequency shift in conventional sample-spinning NMR measurements.
