Insight into Kondo screening in the intermediate-valence compound SmOs$$_4$$Sb$$_{12}$$ uncovered by soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism

Through a high-precision soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) study of the intermediate-valence compound SmOs$$_4$$Sb$$_{12}$$, we show our successful approach of revealing unprecedented details of Kondo screening below a characteristic temperature of $$ T_{0} sim$$ 20 K in the paramagnetic phase. The multiplet XMCD structure at the Sm $$M_{5}$$ edge sensitive to the 4$$f$$ configuration enabled us to observe a clear difference between the temperature evolution above and below $$T_{0}$$ with one- and two-component behavior, respectively. Our findings are in strong contrast to the conventional Kondo crossover that coincides with the valence transition, but are qualitatively accounted for by theoretical XMCD predictions combined with the two-fluid phenomenology recently proposed. This work contributes to the large context of Kondo physics that is closely related to quantum criticality in heavy fermion systems.

We present a detailed study on the $$4f$$ ground state symmetry of the pressure-induced superconductor CeCu$$_2$$Ge$$_2$$ probed by soft X-ray absorption and hard X-ray photoemission spectroscopy. The revised Ce $$4f$$ ground states are determined as $$|{Gamma_7}rangle=sqrt{0.45}|{J_{z}=pm frac{5}{2}}rangle - sqrt{0.55}|{mp frac{3}{2}}rangle$$ with $$Sigmamathchar`-{rm type}$$ in-plane rotational symmetry. This gives an in-plane magnetic moment consistent with the antiferromagnetic moment as reported in neutron measurements. Since the in-plane symmetry is the same as that for the superconductor CeCu$$_2$$Si$$_2$$, we propose that the charge distribution along the $$c$$-axis plays an essential role in driving the system into a superconducting phase.

Thin films of the ferromagnetic metal SrRuO$$_{2}$$ (SRO) show a varying easy magnetization axis depending on the epitaxial strain, and undergo a metal-to-insulator transition with decreasing film thickness. We have investigated the magnetic properties of SRO thin films with varying thicknesses fabricated on SrTiO$$_{3}$$(001) substrates by soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the Ru M2,3 edge. Results have shown that, with decreasing film thickness, the film changes from ferromagnetic to nonmagnetic at around 3 monolayer thickness, consistent with previous magnetization and magneto-optical Kerr effect measurements. The orbital magnetic moment perpendicular to the film was found to be 0.1$$mu$$B/Ru, and remained nearly unchanged with decreasing film thickness while the spin magnetic moment decreases. A mechanism for the formation of the orbital magnetic moment is discussed based on the electronic structure of the compressively strained SRO film.

The electronic and magnetic properties of Fe atoms in the ferromagnetic semiconductor (In,Fe)As codoped with Be have been studied by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at the Fe $$L_{2,3}$$ edge. The XAS and XMCD spectra showed simple spectral line shapes similar to Fe metal, but the ratio of the orbital and spin magnetic moments estimated using the XMCD sum rules was significantly larger than that of Fe metal, indicating a significant orbital moment of Fe 3$$d$$ electrons in (In,Fe)As:Be. The XMCD intensity as a function of magnetic field indicated hysteretic behavior of the superparamagnetic-like component due to discrete ferromagnetic domains. VC

We have investigated the spin and orbital magnetic moments of Fe in FePt nanoparticles in the $$L1_{0}$$-ordered phase coated with SiO$$_2$$ by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements at the Fe $$L_{2,3}$$ absorption edges. The magnetic coercivity (H$$_{c}$$) was found to be as large as 1.8 T at room temperature, 3 times larger than the thin film value and 50 times larger than that of the gas phase condensed nanoparticles. The hysteresis curve is well explained by the Stoner-Wohlfarth model for noninteracting single-domain nanoparticles with the H$$_{c}$$ distributed from 1 to 5 T.

Metallic transition-metal oxides undergo a metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) as the film thickness decreases across a critical thickness of several monolayers (MLs), but its driving mechanism remains controversial. We have studied the thickness-dependent MIT of the ferromagnetic metal La$$_{0.6}$$Sr$$_{0.4}$$MnO$$_3$$ by X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism. The results suggest that the ferromagnetic phase gradually and most likely inhomogeneously turns into the paramagnetic phase and both phases abruptly become insulating at the critical thickness.
