海外炉を用いた中性子照射試験,2; キャプセル温度制御システムを用いた照射試験の実施(共同研究)

材料研究、RI製造などの中性子照射研究の中核を担っていた材料試験炉(Japan Materials Testing Reactor: JMTR)の廃止が決定された。それに伴い、国内で照射試験及び照射試験炉の運転技術や照射技術の継承を行うことが困難な状況となっている。こうした課題に対処するため、海外の照射炉を用いてJMTRの照射機能の一部を代替するJMTR代替照射を開始することとなった。その足掛かりとして「ポーランド国立原子力研究センターと日本原子力研究開発機構との間の試験研究炉の研究開発のための共同研究取決め」に基づき、ポーランド国立原子力研究センター(NCBJ)が所有するMARIA炉(出力30MW)を中性子照射場として選定し、JMTRの有する照射技術の一つである温度制御システムを有する併用型温度制御装置をMARIA炉に導入し、照射試験を実施した。本照射試験の結果、150日間を超える照射期間を経ても今回導入した併用型温度制御装置及びJMTR型照射試験システムは問題なく稼働し、キャプセル内の熱電対温度や照射時におけるLVDT及びSPGDからの出力をオンラインで計測しながら試験を行うことができることを確認した。さらに、JMTRの照射試験技術である照射キャプセルの一定温度制御において、材料照射試験におけるニーズの高い300$$^{circ}$$Cで実施し、温度変化の大きくなる原子炉出力上昇時には$$pm$$6.3$$^{circ}$$Cの範囲、出力降下時には$$pm$$26.0$$^{circ}$$Cの範囲で制御することができた。これらの結果から、JMTRの照射試験技術である照射温度制御を伴った照射試験がMARIA炉においても実施可能であり、代替照射場として提供しうることが確認できた。

Relationships among non-allophanic/allophanic indicators in six Japanese forest Andosol profiles; Implications for soil classification and genesis

Andic Andosols, prevalent in Japan, have been classified as Allophanic or Non-allophanic, based on indicators: oxalate-extractable silicon (Sio), the ratio of pyrophosphate- to acid-oxalate-extractable aluminum (Alp/Alo), and exchangeable acidity (y1), in the Fifth Committee for Soil Classification and Nomenclature 2017 (FCSCN 2017). This study investigated chemical and mineralogical properties in six forested Andosol profiles to assess the consistency of these indicators and their link to soil formation. While FCSCN 2017 classified two profiles as Allophanic and four as Non-allophanic, inconsistencies were found among the indicators. Sio content is proposed as a more reliable indicator of allophanic material richness than the Alp/Alo ratio, which is influenced by organic matter content. Sio and y1 are suggested as informative parameters for diagnosing allophanic content and soil acidity, respectively. The findings contribute to refining Andosol classification and enhancing our understanding of Andosol formation under forests.

The production of $$^{159,160,161}$$Os and $$^{159,160,161}$$Re was investigated in experiments performed at the Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyvaskyla. New decay chains assigned to $$^{160}$$Os were identified at beam energies of 310 and 330 MeV. These findings are compared with previous studies claiming the observation of $$^{160}$$Os and $$^{156}$$W.

福島第一原子力発電所近傍の居住地域で、除染以外の人間活動(交通など)が空間線量率に与える影響を、現地調査とシミュレーションにより定量評価した。現地調査では、$$^{137}$$Cs沈着量と交通量を収集したところ、交通量が多い地域ほど$$^{137}$$Cs沈着量の減少が顕著であることが確認され、車両の移動などがセシウムのウェザリングを促進する可能性が示唆された。3D-ADRESによるモンテカルロシミュレーションでも、人間活動が舗装面の空間線量率低下を加速し、最大約50%の減少が見られた。これにより、除染以外の人為的活動が空間線量率低下に大きく寄与することが明らかになった。

Field theory of linear spin waves in finite textured ferromagnets

In the context of an ever-expanding experimental and theoretical interest in the magnetization dynamics of mesoscopic magnetic structures, both in the classical and quantum regimes, we formulate a low-energy field theory for the linear spin waves in finite and textured ferromagnets and we perform its constrained canonical quantization. The introduction of a manifestly gauge invariant Lagrangian enables a straightforward application of the Noether's theorem. Taking advantage of this in the context of a broad class of axisymmetric ferromagnets of special conceptual and experimental relevance, a general expression of the conserved and quantized spin-wave total angular momentum is rigorously derived, while separate conservation and quantization of its orbital and spin components are established for a more restricted class of uniaxial exchange ferromagnets. Further particularizing this general framework to the case of axially saturated magnetic thin disks, we develop a semi-analytic theory of the low frequency part of the exchange-dipole azimuthal spin-wave spectrum, providing a powerful theoretical platform for the analysis and interpretation of magnetic resonance experiments on magnetic microdots as further demonstrated in a joint paper.

Orbital angular momentum of azimuthal spin waves

In the context of a growing interdisciplinary interest in the angular momentum of wave fields, the spin-wave case has yet to be fully explored, with the extensively studied notion of spin transport being only part of the broader picture. Here we report experimental evidence for non-zeromagnon orbital angular momentum inside magnetic disk, by resolving the frequency splitting between magnon modes with counter-rotating wavefronts and thereby avoiding formation of azimuthal standing waves. This requires an unambiguous formulation of spin and orbital angular momenta for spin waves, which we provide in full generality taking advantage of a systematic application of quantum field theory techniques as detailed in an associated article. The results unequivocally establish magnetic dipole-dipole interactions as a magnetic-field controllable spin-orbit interaction for magnons. Our findings open a new research direction, leveraging the spectroscopic readability of angular momentum for azimuthal spin waves and other related systems.

Magnetic signature of chiral phonons revealed by neutron spectroscopy in ferrimagnetic Fe$$_{1.75}$$Zn$$_{0.25}$$Mo$$_{3}$$O$$_{8}$$

Lattice vibrations can carry angular momentum and magnetic moments under broken inversion or time-reversal symmetry, forming so-called chiral phonons. While such excitations have been explored in nonmagnetic systems via optical probes, their direct detection in magnetic materials and coupling to spin excitations remain largely unexplored. Here, using neutron spectroscopy, sensitive to both nuclear and magnetic scattering, we reveal the magnetic signature of chiral phonons in ferrimagnetic Fe$$_{1.75}$$Zn$$_{0.25}$$Mo$$_{3}$$O$$_{8}$$ with Curie temperature $$T_C sim 49$$ K. Below $$T_C$$, we observe enhanced magnetic scattering of phonons at small momenta, arising from strong magnon-phonon coupling. In addition, out-of-plane intensity modulation, phonon mode splitting, and field-induced Zeeman shifts are observed, all closely associated with the ferrimagnetic order. These features vanish above $$T_C$$, where phonon spectra are dominated by nuclear scattering. These observations demonstrate the existence of chiral phonons carrying substantial magnetic moments that directly contribute to magnetic scattering, and establish neutron spectroscopy as a powerful, momentum-resolved probe of their magnetic character.

The incorporation of boron (B) as a neutron absorber into metakaolin-based geopolymers for the remediation of radioactive debris following nuclear accidents has attracted considerable attention. In this study, boron carbide (B$$_{4}$$C) was employed as a functional filler, while cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) acted as both a dispersant and a stabiliser to enhance the neutron shielding properties of metakaolin-based geopolymers. Although the addition of B$$_{4}$$C improved processability via a roller-ball effect and had no discernible impact on the geopolymerisation process, its weakly polar, negatively charged surface led to the formation of a loose, weak-shell interfacial transition zone (ITZ) between the filler and the matrix, thereby reducing mechanical strength and chemical stability. In contrast, CTAB self-assembled into an interdigitated monolayer on the B$$_{4}$$C surface, reversing its surface charge to positive and promoting its uniform dispersion within the matrix. This work offers a promising approach for engineering high-performance, multifunctional geopolymer composites for nuclear and environmental applications.

Incommensurate magnetism drives singular angular magnetoresistance in the magnetic Weyl semimetal CeAlGe

We demonstrate that a multi-k incommensurate magnetic state in the Weyl semimetal CeAlGe gives rise to a singular angular magnetoresistance (SAMR), which is an electrical transport signature capable of detecting magnetic field direction with exceptional precision. In contrast, its sister compound CeAlSi is devoid of both multi-k order and SAMR. We reveal that both phenomena appear upon 57% Ge substitution in CeAlSi1-xGex and coincide with electronic structure changes that soften the single-ion in-plane anisotropy and enhance Weyl-mediated magnetic interactions. These results unveil a remarkable connection between band topology, electronic transport, and collective magnetism in Weyl semimetals.

Persistence of collectivity in the low-lying states of $$^{30,31}$$Na inside the $$N=20$$ island of inversion

中性子過剰核では中性子数20の魔法数が消滅していることが知られているが、それを特徴づける物理量が核変形に直接関係する$$B(E2)$$値である。この研究では、ミシガン州立大学のサイクロトロンにて$$^{30,31}$$Naのクーロン励起によってこれらの原子核の基底状態バンド間の$$B(E2)$$値を測定した。$$^{30}$$Naについては$$3^+$$$$4^+$$$$^{31}$$Naについては$$5/2^+$$$$7/2^+$$のそれぞれ2本の励起状態への$$B(E2)$$値が得られ、大きな固有四重極モーメントをもった変形核であることが確かめられた。これらの実験値は殻模型による計算値ともよい一致を示している。

Possible transition from silandic to aluandic andosols with acidification as evidenced by detailed profile investigation of two well-preserved forest andosols in Japan

Andosols are one of the major soil types in Japan. Andosols have been grouped into two distinct categories: Silandic and Aluandic, but their formation has not been well investigated. To clarify the formation process of the Andosols, two soil profiles were collected from natural forest sites at Aya (Sil-A) and Shiiba (Alu-A) in Miyazaki. The soil samples were analyzed for carbon stock, and chemical and mineralogical properties. Based on the analytical data, Sil-A was classified as a Silandic Andosol and an Allophanic Andosol, whereas Alu-A was classified as an Aluandic/Silandic Andosol and a Non-allophanic Andosol. The changes in the chemical and mineralogical properties with depth suggested that acidification had happened from upper layers, resulting in dissolution of the allophanic materials and formation of Al-humus complexes in both soils, and Alu-A would have been more deeply affected by this process than Sil-A. Therefore, we conclude that Silandic Andosols can be transformed into Aluandic Andosols with acidification.

1次元熱移流-拡散-生成方程式に基づく数値モデリングと熱年代学を組み合わせた鮮新世谷川岳花崗岩類の高確度な削剥史

花崗岩は一般的に数km以深の地殻深部で固結するため、固結年代の若い花崗岩が露出する地域では、極めて急速な隆起、削剥が起きている可能性がある。花崗岩の定量的な隆起・削剥速度を推定するためには、主に熱年代学的手法が用いられるが、固結年代の若い花崗岩へ適用する場合、冷却年代は、花崗岩自身の初期冷却と削剥の両方を反映している可能性がある。本研究では、後期中新世-鮮新世の谷川岳花崗岩類が分布する谷川岳地域を対象に、先行研究で報告された熱年代と1次元の熱移流-拡散-生成方程式を用いた貫入プルトンの数値モデリングを組み合わせることで、確度の高い削剥速度の推定を試みた。その結果、約3.3Maのプルトンと約4.0Maのプルトンの1地点では、既報年代に一致するモデル熱史が生成され、それぞれ1.2-1.5mm/yrおよび0.9-1.3mm/yrのモデル削剥速度が得られた。これらの削剥速度はアパタイト(U-Th)/He年代から推定された削剥速度と整合的であり、アパタイト(U-Th)/He年代は初期冷却を反映していないと考えられる。

Landscape signature of seismogenic faults in the off and onshore domains of the Noto Peninsula in Japan's back-arc

The eastern margin of the Sea of Japan is a zone of great seismic and tsunami hazard due to multiple offshore and nearshore reverse faults as shown by the 2024 Mw7.5 Noto Peninsula Earthquake. Here we compare coseismic deformation of the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake with 4,767 individual marine terraces attributed to 16 successive sea-level stages over the last Myr. This reveals that the earthquake faults started slipping between 326 and 238 ka. The emerged landscape is still adjusting to it while nearshore underwater scarps mark the active faults. Applied to nearby Sado Island, these observations reveal the likely location of an active fault that drives its fast deformation. Active faults defining the edge of uplifting land are likely found in the near shore domain, drowned by the current sea-level high stand.

We demonstrate that a single 9-keV pulse from X-ray free-electron-laser can form a nanoscale mm-long cavity in LiF. The laser-generated shock pressure results in channel formation with >1,000 length-to-diameter aspect ratio. The development of void is analyzed via continuum and atomistic simulations revealing a sequence of processes leading to the final long cavity structure. This work presents the study of mm-long nanochannel formation by a single high-brilliance X-ray free-electron laser pulse.

Phonon spectrum in the spin-Peierls phase of CuGeO$$_{3}$$

CuGeO$$_{3}$$ has long been studied as a prototypical example of the spin-Peierls transition in a $$S = 1/2$$ Heisenberg chain. Despite intensive investigation of this quasi-one-dimensional material, systematic measurements and calculations of the phonon excitations in the dimerized phase have not to date been possible, leaving certain aspects of the spin-Peierls phenomenon unresolved. We perform state-of-the-art density functional theory (DFT) calculations to compute the electronic structure and phonon dynamics in the low-temperature dimerized phase. We also perform high-resolution neutron spectroscopy to measure the full phonon spectrum over multiple Brillouin zones. We find excellent agreement between our numerical and experimental results that extend to all measurement temperatures. Notable features of our phonon spectra include a number of steeply dispersive modes, nonmonotonic dispersion features, and specific phonon anticrossings, which we relate to the mode eigenvectors. By calculating the magnetic interactions within DFT and studying the effects of different phonon modes on the superexchange paths, we discuss the possibility of observing spinphonon hybridization effects in experiments performed both in and out of equilibrium.

Studying the in-medium $$phi$$ meson spectrum through kaons in proton-nucleus reactions

Exploring the mass modifications of $$phi$$ mesons in nuclei provides insights into the nature of strongly interacting matter. Specifically, $$phi$$ meson mass shifts can be related to the in-medium modification of the strange quark condensate. Therefore, the partial restoration of chiral symmetry can be studied by observing the mass shifts through the decay channels $$phi to e^+ e^-$$, and $$phi to K^+ K^-$$. In this paper, we examine the possibility of observing the $$phi$$ meson mass modifications of the $$phi$$ mesons in 30 GeV proton-nucleus (C, Cu, Pb) collisions, to be studied at the J-PARC E88 experiment, through the kaonic decay channel, with the off-shell Budapest Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (BuBUU) transport model. By applying different mean fields to the kaons, we examine their effects on the invariant mass spectra.

A Metallic $$p$$-wave magnet with commensurate spin helix

Antiferromagnetic states with spin-split electronic structure give rise to novel spintronic, magnonic, and electronic phenomena despite (near-) zero net magnetization. The simplest odd-parity spin splitting, $$p$$-wave, was originally proposed to emerge from a collective instability in interacting electron systems. Recent theory identifies a distinct route to realise $$p$$-wave spin-split electronic bands without strong correlations, termed p-wave magnetism. Here we demonstrate an experimental realisation of a metallic $$p$$-wave magnet.
