Hg was observed for the first time following the
decay of the 13/2
isomer in
Pb produced in the
Nd
Cr
reaction. Using
-
delayed coincidence measurements, the half-life of this isomer was measured to be 290(30)
s. This isomer is proposed to deexcite by an unobserved low-energy
2 transition to the known 9/2
member of a strongly prolate-deformed 7/2
[514] band, followed by a 105-keV
1 transition to the bandhead. A lower limit of B(
2)
0.018 W.u. was deduced for the unobserved transition. The presumed retardation is proposed to be due to the notable shape change between the initial, nearly spherical, and the final, strongly deformed, states. A similar scenario is also considered for the 13/2
isomer in
Hg, suggesting both are cases of shape isomers. The B(
2) systematics of neutron transitions across the nuclear chart is discussed.

coincidences and a number of new levels and transitions were identified. Shell-model calculations for excited states in
Bi and
Po were performed using two different effective interactions: the H208 and the modified Kuo-Herling particle interaction. Both calculations agree on the interpretation of the new
-decaying state as an
isomer and allow for the tentative assignment of shell-model states to several high-spin states in
Po.

gold isomers
Au
have been measured at CERN-ISOLDE, using the in-source laser resonance-ionization spectroscopy technique. From the measured hyperfine constants the differences between hyperfine anomalies have been deduced. These differential hyperfine anomaly values have been used to determine the hyperfine anomaly relative to the stable
Au with advanced atomic calculations. Magnetic dipole moments for the gold isomers in question have been deduced, taking into account the corresponding relative hyperfine-anomaly values. It has been shown that the commonly used prescription for the extraction of the magnetic moment values for the gold isotopes should be reconsidered. The magnetic moments calculated by this prescription have been reevaluated by properly accounting for the hyperfine anomaly, which is as large as 10% for several gold isotopes.

The endpoint of the odd-even nuclear shape staggering in mercury was observed directly by measuring the isotope shifts and hyperfine structures of
Hg. Changes in the mean-square charge radii for all mentioned isotopes, magnetic dipole, and electric quadrupole moments of the odd-
isotopes and arguments in favor of
spin assignment for
Hg were deduced. Experimental results are compared with density functional theory (DFT) and Monte Carlo shell model (MCSM) calculations. DFT calculations using Skyrme parametrizations predict a jump in the charge radius around the neutron
midshell, with an odd-even staggering pattern related to the coexistence of nearly degenerate oblate and prolate minima. This near-degeneracy is highly sensitive to many aspects of the effective interaction, a fact that renders perfect agreement with experiments out of reach for current functionals. MCSM calculations of states with the experimental spins and parities show good agreement for both electromagnetic moments and the observed charge radii. A clear mechanism for the origin of shape staggering within this context is identified: a substantial change in occupancy of the proton
and neutron
orbitals.

Po, was replaced by a new 248-keV transition, and the spin of this isomer was reassigned from (11
) to (10
). The de-excitation of the (11
) isomeric level in
Po by the 154-keV transition was confirmed and a parallel de-excitation by a 733-keV (E3) transition to (8
) level of the ground-state band was suggested. Moreover, side feeding to the (4
) level of the ground-state band was proposed. The paper also discusses strengths of transitions de-exciting 11
isomers in neighboring Po and Pb isotopes.
