被引用回数:0 パーセンタイル:0(Physics, Multidisciplinary)We demonstrate and elucidate quantum effects on the honeycomb lattice through comprehensive inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the prototype honeycomb lattice quantum magnet YbCl as a function of applied magnetic field. Examining the spectrum above the saturation field where linear spin-wave theory is essentially exact, we accurately determine the dominant nearest-neighbor Heisenberg interaction. Below the saturation field, we reveal a field-dependent energy renormalization of the entire magnetic spectrum; the sharp spin-wave modes as well as the multimagnon continuum. This renormalization is a quantum effect that can be accurately captured by the first 1=S correction in nonlinear spin-wave theory. Furthermore, we find that the application of a magnetic field induces a qualitatively new sharp feature inside the multimagnon continuum; the lower edge of a specific two-magnon component; which is complementary to the previously observed Van Hove singularity and demonstrates that structures within the multimagnon continuum can occur over a wide experimental parameter space and can be used as an additional means of identifying quantum phenomena.

被引用回数:27 パーセンタイル:98.49(Engineering, Mechanical)Face-centered cubic single-phase high-entropy alloys (HEAs) containing multi-principal transition metals have attracted significant attention, exhibiting an unprecedented combination of strength and ductility owing to their low stacking fault energy (SFE) and large misfit parameter that creates severe local lattice distortion. Increasing both strength and ductility further is challenging. In the present study, we demonstrate via meticulous experiments that the CoCrFeNi HEA with the addition of the substitutional metalloid Si can retain a single-phase FCC structure while its yield strength (up to 65%), ultimate strength (up to 34%), and ductility (up to 15%) are simultaneously increased, owing to a synthetical effect of the enhanced solid solution strengthening and a reduced SFE. The dislocation behaviors and plastic deformation mechanisms were tuned by the addition of Si, which improves the strain hardening and tensile ductility. The present study provides new strategies for enhancing HEA performance by targeted metalloid additions.

An inelastic neutron scattering study of a single crystals is a powerful experimental technique to investigate the spin dynamics and hence is widely employed to probe the magnetic excitation spectra of topological materials. However, when the neutron intensity rapidly disperses, such as near a crossing point for a Dirac magnon, the apparent spectrum is extremely sensitive to experimental conditions including sample mosaic, resolution, and integration range. Here we study a gapless Dirac magnon candidate CrCl to show how the quantification of a gapless or gaped spectrum at the Dirac point is extremely sensitive to the integration range of data. Our work calls for a careful examination of reports of gaps in inelastic neutron scattering spectra to ensure that topological gaps are not misdiagnosed or overestimated due to experimental factors.

The spectra display well defined spin waves extending up to 120 meV. Above this energy, the spin waves become progressively broadened, reflecting interactions with the Stoner continuum. Using linear spin wave theory, we determine an effective spin Hamiltonian that explains the measured dispersion. This analysis indicates that the Dirac magnon at the K point occurs on the brink of a region where well defined spin waves become unobservable. Our results emphasize the influential role of itinerant carriers on the topological spin excitations of metallic kagome magnets.

These include the 4 to 2 in Zn and the 2 to 0 and 4 to 2 in Zn. The reduced E() energies and increased E(4)/E(2) ratios at =52,54 compared to Zn attest that the magicity is confined just on the neutron number =50 only. The levels observed in Zn suggest the onset of deformation towards heavier Zn isotopes. The data were compared to state-of-the-art shell model calculations.

Excited states in these isotopes were populated via (p,2p) reactions using radioactive Rb beams accelerated to 220 MeV/nucleon. The new data show a significant increase in deformation beyond N=60, as well as competing configurations (shape-coexistence) at low energy. The data were compared with beyond-mean-field calculations which predict level energies in good agreement with observation, and suggest oblate-prolate shape coexistence.

被引用回数:21 パーセンタイル:77.24(Physics, Multidisciplinary)Excited states in Sn were populated following one-neutron knockout reaction from an unstable Sn beam at the RIBF laboratory in RIKEN. In addition to the already known rays, additional strength was observed for the first time in the excitation-energy range 3.5-5.5 MeV. Since the neutron separation energy of Sn is low, this observation provides direct evidence for the radioactive decay of neutron-unbound states in this nucleus. The ability of decay to compete with neutron emission was attributed to a mismatch between the wave functions of the initial and final states in the neutron emission case. These findings suggest that in the region south-east of Sn, nuclear structure effects play a significant role in the decay of unbound states, which are instead usually ignored in the evaluation of neutron-emission probabilities in astrophysical simulations.

The experimental results were compared to state-of-the-art shell-model calculations, and indicate a dominance of prolate deformation in the low-lying states, coexisting with spherical states. The decay of the isobars is shown to progress in accordance to a new type of shell evolution, the so-called Type II, which involves many particle-hole excitations across energy gaps.

被引用回数:43 パーセンタイル:88.64(Physics, Multidisciplinary)The first measurement of rays emitted by the very neutron rich nuclei Mo (Z=42) and Zr (Z=40) was carried out at the RIBF facility at RIKEN. These data shine light on the postulated N=70 harmonic oscillator shell. If the spin-orbit splitting which gives rise to the N=82 shell gap is reduced in very neutron-rich nuclei, the harmonic oscillator gap at N=70 should open instead. However, both the measured energy of the first excited state Mo and Zr, respectively 235(7) keV and 185(11) keV, and their E(4)/E(2) ratio, indicate that these nuclei are good rotors, and exclude the shell stabilization scenario at Z=40 and N=70. These results were compared to state-of-the-art density functional theoretical calculations using Gogny and Skyrme effective interactions.

被引用回数:5 パーセンタイル:39.53(Physics, Nuclear)The levels in Sn populated from the decay of In isomers were investigated at the ISOLDE facility of CERN using the newly commissioned ISOLDE Decay Station. The lowest 1/2 state and the 3/2 ground state in Sn are expected to have configurations dominated by the neutron (=0) and (=2) single-particle states, respectively. Consequently, these states should be connected by a somewhat slow -forbidden transition. Using fast-timing spectroscopy we have measured the half-life of the 1/2 315.3-keV state, = 19(10) ps, which corresponds to a moderately fast transition. Shell-model calculations using the CD-Bonn effective interaction, with standard effective charges and factors, predict a 4-ns half-life for this level. We can reconcile the shell-model calculations to the measured value by the renormalization of the effective operator for neutron holes.

Co was separated with BigRIPS, implanted into the WaS3ABi Silicon array, and the ray measured using the EURICA spectrometer. From the analysis, 60 new -ray transitions and 21 new levels in Ni were observed. The new experimental information is compared to shell-model calculations which include neutron excitation across the shell. The calculations reproduce rather well the observed states, implying that a clear understanding of these low-lying excitations has been achieved.

Half-lives and -delayed neutron emission probabilities have been extracted for these decays, together with first experimental information on excited states populated in Fe. The data indicate a continuously increasing deformation for Fe isotopes up to A=70, and interpreted to be due to the interplay between quadrupole correlation of specific neutron orbitals and the monopole component of the proton-neutron interaction.

Lifetimes of excited states in Cu nuclei were measured with the recoil-distance Doppler-shift method. The resulting electromagnetic matrix elements for transitions from excited states in Cu nuclei was used to assess the collective or single-particle character of these states. The results are compared with predictions of large-scale shell-model calculations, showing how the proton pf shell evolve as neutrons fill the 1g orbital.
