Proceedings of 19th International Topical Meeting on Nuclear Reactor Thermal Hydraulics (NURETH-19) (Internet), 16 Pages, 2022/03

Properly assessing pool scrubbing decontamination factors or radionuclide re-entrainment rates in a reactor safety analysis needs to be supported by a sufficiently robust experimental dataset, based on well qualified aerosol measurement techniques. A review of different pool scrubbing-related source term experiments has been conducted, along with a comparison of the measurement techniques that have been employed. In most areas, a fairly robust dataset exists to assess decontamination factors, but there is still a need to better understand some of the underlying aerosol mechanisms. The available dataset of re-entrainment experiments is smaller, and has gaps, for example, in pools with high velocity gas injections, or with re-flooded corium applications where the pool is undergoing film boiling. There are also many measurement techniques (e.g., cascade impactors, light scattering techniques, phase Doppler anemometry, etc.) that have different capabilities and are suitable for studying different aspects of the experiments. Linking the results that the techniques give, and how their results can ultimately be employed in safety analysis (including uncertainty quantification), is an important consideration in applying the results. This work was performed as a collaborative activity within the framework of the NUGENIA IPRESCA (Integration of Pool scrubbing Research to Enhance Source-term Calculations) project.

The OECD/NEA Benchmark Study at the Accident of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (BSAF) project, which started in 2012 and continued until 2018, was one of the earliest responses to the accident at Fukushima Daiichi. The project, divided into two phases addressed the investigation of the accident at Unit 1, 2 and 3 by Severe Accident (SA) codes until 500 h focusing on thermal-hydraulics, core relocation, Molten Corium Concrete Interaction (MCCI) and fission products release and transport. The objectives of BSAF were to make up plausible scenarios based primarily on SA forensic analysis, support the decommissioning and inform SA codes modeling. The analysis and comparison among the institutes have brought up vital insights regarding the accident progression identifying periods of core meltdown and relocation, Reactor Pressure Vessel (RPV) and Primary Containment Vessel (PCV) leakage/failure through the comparison of pressure, water level and CAMS signatures. The combination of code results and inspections (muon radiography, PCV inspection) has provided a picture of the current status of the debris distribution and plant status. All units present a large relocation of core materials and all of them present ex-vessel debris with Unit 1 and Unit 3 showing evidences of undergoing MCCI. Uncertainties have been identified in particular on the time and magnitude of events such as corium relocation in RPV and into cavity floor, RPV and PCV rupture events. Main uncertainties resulting from the project are the large and continuous MCCI progression predicted by basically all the SA codes and the leak pathways from RPV to PCV and PCV to reactor building and environment. The BSAF project represents a pioneering exercise which has set the basis and provided lessons learned not only for code improvement but also for the development of new related projects to investigate in detail further aspects of the Fukushima Daiichi accident.

A method to reveal the presence of Mg content inside the different parts of leaves of Hedera helix is analyzed under X-ray radiation, obtained from a plasma source with a Mg target. We found that the green side of the leaf is highlighted. We may suppose that the reason why the X-rays from a Mg plasma source, allow us to pick up the green side is probably duet the greater presence of the amount of Mg (from chlorophyll or other complexes and/or salts) in the two sides, green and white, of the leaf.

This article reports on the first utilization of the soft X-ray beamline at the Da$$Phi$$ne synchrotron light source for mapping the intake of different elements in plant tissues. As a test, the method of dual-energy X-ray microradiography was applied to the investigation of the natural sulfur content in dried leaf and root samples. Our ultimate goal was to monitor the pollutant lead and its intake, which was added in controlled doses to the hydroponic medium of laboratory-controlled samples of vegetal species. The results obtained by the nondestructive X-ray radiographic analysis are compared to the values of concentrations determined by a standard chemical analysisutilizing atomic absorption spectroscopy. From this comparison the validity of the X-ray detection of heavy metals in biological samples has been confirmed. The superposition of the dual energy results on the simple planar radiography shows the representation of the pollutant intake directly on the sample structures.

High contrast imaging of in vivo cells with submicron spatial resolution was obtained with a contact water window X-ray microscopy technique using a point-like, laser-plasma produced water-window X-ray radiation source and LiF crystals as detectors. The powerful performance of LiF crystals allowed to detect the exudates of Chlorella cells in their living medium and their spatial distribution in situ, without any special sample preparation
