We showcase the general capabilities of the technique by performing 3D vector tomography reconstructing the full magnetic field inside a 10 mm
13 mm
2 mm fragment of the remagnetized Martian meteorite NWA 7034. This was done in preparation for the Mars sample return mission where the orientation of samples on Mars is known. The magnetic field was measured with a spatial resolution of 215 micro-meter and lower field bound of 0.5 mT mm.

One of the major challenges with the development of PEMWE is the PTL/catalyst layer interface passivation, which is commonly alleviated by coating precious metals such as Pt. Herein, we report, for the first time, the usage of polarized neutron imaging (PNI) on a half-half PTL approach to investigate current distribution inside the PTL layer under the influence of Ti passivation under PEMWE operando condition. First, the electrochemical study of PEMWE reveals an obvious advantage of Pt coating in preventing Ti passivation by showing 822 mV less overpotential at 1 A cm
(1.771 V) for the superior sample (Pt-coated PTL) compared to the PEMWE with pristine Ti PTL (2.539 V). Second, it is confirmed that using ex situ electronic and structural characterizations, Ti passivation cannot be recognized, suggesting a temporary passivation process in an operating PEMWE. Employing PNI for operando mapping of the current distribution inside the PEMWE shows that most of the electrical current favors the Pt-coated PTL, perfectly aligned with the results obtained from the high-resolution operando neutron radiography in which around 60% of the produced oxygen was found in the Pt-coated PTL.

The introduction of ultra-thick graphite anodes, desired for high energy densities, meets limitations in internal electrode transport properties, leading to detrimental consequences. Yet, there is a lack of experimental tools capable of providing a complete view of local processes. Here, a multi-modal
measurement approach is introduced, enabling quantitative spatio-temporal observations of Li concentrations and intercalation phases in ultra-thick graphite electrodes. Neutron imaging and diffraction concurrently provide correlated multiscale information from the scale of the cell down to the crystallographic scale. In particular, the evolving formation of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), observation of gradients in total lithium content, as well as in the formation of ordered Li
C
phases and trapped lithium are mapped throughout the first charge-discharge cycle of the cell. Different lithiation stages co-exist during charging and discharging; delayed lithiation and delithiation processes are observed in central regions of the electrode, while the SEI formation, potential plating, and dead lithium are predominantly found closer to the interface with the separator. The study emphasizes the potential to investigate Li-ion diffusion and the kinetics of lithiation phase formation in thick electrodes.

O
-type Schiff base complexes with tetravalent 4f- and 5f-block metals, [M(salpn)
] (H
salpn =
-disalicylidene-1,3-diaminopropane; M = Ce, Th, U, Np, and Pu), were prepared to systematically investigate their solid state structure, and their complexation behaviour in solution with the goal to investigate the subtle differences between 4f- and 5f-elements. X-ray diffraction revealed that all investigated metal cations form [M(salpn)
] complexes. All the complexes show the same ligand arrangement with meridional conformation, amongst which only Ce(IV) exhibits unique behaviour upon crystallisation. [Ce(salpn)
] crystallises in two less symmetric systems (
or
2
/
), whilst all the other [M(salpn)
] crystallise in a more symmetric orthorhombic system (
ban). Quantum chemical calculations suggest that the observed structural peculiarity of Ce(IV) stems from the geometrical flexibility due to the more "ionic" nature of bonds to the 4f element.
H NMR measurements revealed that [M(salpn)
] forms two different species in solution with and without an additional solvent molecule, where the relative distribution of the two species depends mainly on the ionic radius of the metal centre. Again, Ce(IV) behaves differently from the tetravalent actinides with a higher ratio of the solvent-molecule-coordinated species than the ratio expected from its ionic radius. Hence, this study is successful in observing subtle differences between 4f- (
Ce) and 5f-elements (actinides; Th, U, Np, and Pu) both in the solid state and in solution on an analytically distinguishable level, and in relating the observed subtle differences to their electronic structure.

It utilises the Larmor precession of the neutron spin in the presence of an external magnetic field and has so far been restricted to the measurement of magnetic fields weak enough to keep the neutron precession below the phase-wrapping limit at 180 degree. Through the use of polychromatic time-of-flight information in combination with an iterative forward model reconstruction algorithm we have gone beyond this limit, thereby vastly broadening the potential of the technique. We present the reconstructed magnetic field of a measured current carrying solenoid as a proof-of-principle for this novel method, as well as successfully applying the method to a simulated data set of a sample consisting of multiple magnetic domains.

In contrast to neutron scattering studies, where the interaction of the neutron's magnetic moment with magnetic states of matter has been exploited for a long time, the direct visualization of magnetic fields in neutron imaging is a relatively new field and is still developing. Here, we give an overview of the status and provide approaches to visualizing magnetic fields with polarized neutrons, together with a report on the latest developments in attempting to record neutron tomographies for 3D reconstructions of magnetic vector fields.

Before the definitive shutdown in 2009, PH
NIX end-of-life tests were conducted to gather additional experience on the operation of sodium cooled reactors. Thanks to the CEA, the IAEA decided in 2007 to launch the CRP entitled Control Rod Withdrawal Test performed during the PH
NIX end-of-life experiments. The objective of this publication is to document the results and main achievements of the benchmark analyses on the control rod withdrawal test performed within the framework. For the total control rod worth, two groups of results were observed. The difference between the groups can be explained on the basis of the control rod model treatment on self-shielded cross-sections of absorbing media with deterministic codes. Heat transfers and sodium mixing phenomena strengthened by sodium turbulent flows in the hot plenum disturb power balances and degrade the comparisons. It leads the systematic overestimation in power deviation calculations for all the participants.

Electron beam ion traps (EBITs) have proven to be versatile and indispensable tools for the production and study of highly-charged ions. In an EBIT, an electron beam is compressed by a strong magnetic field. Usually the field is generated by superconducting magnet coils. To ease operation we introduce a novel magnetic design based on permanent magnets for a 0.74 tesla EBIT. An open trap design offers a large solid angle access to the trap centre. Our EBIT is intended to serve as a reliable source for HCIs. Additionally a new off-axis gun is under construction, to be used at synchrotron and free-electron laser light sources for energy calibration by spectroscopy on HCIs. By using this off-axis gun the photon beam can pass through the EBIT and is available for beamline users. Currently, first experiments with a prototype are carried out regarding trapping an extraction of HCIs.

Magnetic field imaging using polarized neutrons is an attractive technique for neutron imaging due to its capability to study magnetic field distributions not only in free space but also inside bulk materials. The use of a pulsed neutron beam with the polarization imaging technique allows us to analyze the wavelength dependent polarization efficiently and precisely and enables us to evaluate accumulated field strength along the beam trajectory. Recently, we have constructed a 3D polarization analysis apparatus at the RADEN beam line of the J-PARC Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility, which is the world's first dedicated pulsed neutron imaging instrument. In this presentation, we will introduce our pulsed polarized neutron imaging technique and show results of recent application studies and technical development.

The monazite fission-track (MFT) method is expected to be a novel thermochronometer with a temperature window below 50 degrees on 1-100 Myrs timescales. Recently, the authors attempted to extract the MFT length profile of spontaneous tracks versus depth (i.e., temperature) from a series of Kontinentale Tiefbohrung (KTB) borehole samples. They were obtained through a deep-drilling project in Germany, and geologic and thermochronologic data have been reported: the geothermal gradient was assumed to be maintained over the past 25-100 Ma, a sufficient age dataset based on apatite FT, apatite and zircon U-Th/He, and quartz ESR ages. The PAZ was estimated to be 30-80 degrees on geological timescales based on the length-temperature profile of KTB samples, constraining the possible PAZ range rather than laboratory experiments. To further understand annealing kinetics, MFT dating is desirable for comparing the FT length-temperature profile and age-temperature (t-T) profiles of other dating methods. Dating results on seven KTB samples yield the MFT age of 1.2
0.1 Ma (hereinafter, 1 sigma error range) at the surface (10 degrees), subsequent partial age resetting from 0.51
0.03 to 0.003
0.001 Ma at a depth of 910-2725 m (31.6-81.7 degrees), and total reset at 3090 m (91.7 degrees). Notably, all samples yield significantly younger ages than previous data, despite a gentle geological history since the Cenozoic period (25 Ma). This observation may be reflected in ambient MFT annealing, suggesting that the surface sample (10 degrees) is consistent with the PAZ of laboratory annealing experiments (-44 to 101 degrees) rather than with the MFT length-temperature profile of the KTB (30-80 degrees). Alternatively, non-thermal annealing (i.e., ionization) may occur through self-alpha-irradiation and alpha-recoil driven by abundant U and Th over geological timescales, inferred from the case study of apatite and zircon.
