We report on muon spin relaxation (SR) measurements in a mixed perovskite compound, (LaAlO)(SrAlTaO) with (LSAT), which is widely used as a single-crystalline substrate for thin film deposition. In zero applied field (ZF), muon depolarization due to the distribution of nuclear dipole fields was observed in the temperature range from 4 K to 270 K. Interestingly, SR time spectra in ZF maintained a Gaussian-like feature over the entire range, while the depolarization rate exhibited a monotonic decrease with increasing temperature. This behavior may be attributed to the thermally activated diffusion of muons between a few adjacent sites within a confined space of the angstrom scale, where the motionally averaged local field that each muon experiences can remain non-zero and result in maintaining the Gaussian-like line shape. The spatial distribution of electrostatic potential at lattice interstices evaluated via density functional theory calculations suggests that such a restriction of muon diffusion paths can be caused by the random distribution of cations with different nominal valences in the mixed perovskite lattice.

J-PARC Muon Facility: MUSE (Muon Science Establishment) is responsible for the inter-university user program and the operation, maintenance, and construction of the muon beamlines, namely D-line, S-line, U-line, and H-line, along with the muon source at J-PARC Materials and Life Science Facility (MLF). In this paper, recent developments are briefly presented.

被引用回数:1 パーセンタイル:15.7(Chemistry, Multidisciplinary)Muon spin rotation (SR) experiments were performed to directly investigate the temperature dependence of the short-range order or correlations of chromium spins in the paramagnetic phase of AgCrSe. The detailed investigation of the SR spectra over a wide temperature range from low to high temperatures revealed that the short-range spin correlations developed below about 184 K. It also confirmed no short-range correlations at high temperatures, which had been controversial in previous quasi-elastic neutron scattering studies. In addition, the muon spin relaxation was qualitatively changed and showed large missing asymmetry below about 89 K, where the correlation clearly implied short-range spin order. There could be a preparative phenomenon of the phase transition or an anisotropic short-range spin correlation.

Several new studies are also underway, such as applying negative muon non-destructive elemental analysis to the analysis of samples returned from the asteroid Ryugu in the D2 area of the D-line. This paper reports on the latest status of MUSE.

被引用回数:6 パーセンタイル:78.27(Physics, Multidisciplinary)Successive magnetic phase transitions in EuIrGe, an intermetallic compound with a body centered tetragonal lattice belonging to a polar space group I4mm, has been investigated by neutron diffraction and resonant X-ray diffraction. It is shown that EuIrGe exhibits an incommensurate longitudinal sinusoidalorder with (0, 0, 0.792) and m c-axis in the high temperature phase, which changes to a cycloidal order with = (, 0, 0.8) ( 0.017) and m ac-plane in the intermediate phase. In the low temperature phase, the cycloidal plane rotates by 45 to have =(, 0.8) (0.012). It is also pointed out that the X-ray scattering amplitude from odd-parity magnetic quadrupole due to the polar environment interfere with that from normal even-parity magnetic dipole in the magnetic ordered phase.

While magnetic skyrmions were originally discovered in noncentrosymmetric systems, recently a nanometric skyrmion lattice has also been reported for centrosymmetric rare-earth compounds. For the latter systems, a novel skyrmion formation mechanism mediated by itinerant electrons has been proposed, and the search of a simpler model system allowing for a better understanding of their intricate magnetic phase diagram is highly demanded. Here, we report the discovery of square and rhombic lattices of nanometric skyrmions in a centrosymmetric binary compound EuAl, by performing small-angle neutron and resonant elastic X-ray scattering experiments. Unlike previously reported centrosymmetric skyrmion-hosting materials, EuAl shows multiple-step reorientation of the fundamental magnetic modulation vector as a function of magnetic field, probably reflecting a delicate balance of associated itinerant-electron-mediated interactions. The present results demonstrate that a variety of distinctive skyrmion orders can be derived even in a simple centrosymmetric binary compound, which highlights rare-earth intermetallic systems as a promising platform to realize/control the competition of multiple topological magnetic phases in a single material.

被引用回数:1 パーセンタイル:7.86(Physics, Applied)Hydrogen defects sometimes form shallow impurity levels in semiconductors, and it is an important topic for semiconductor research to investigate their details. One of the experimental methods to determine the state of hydrogen is the muon spin rotation (SR) experiment. By observing formation of a pseudo-hydrogen atom, called muonium, it is possible to investigate the hydrogen defect levels. In a previous theoretical study, the pinning levels were calculated for various materials as a reference for hydrogen defect levels, and these levels were universally distributed near the hydrogen electrode potential. Based on the prediction, SR experiments were performed for germanium sulfide (GeS) and germanium telluride (GeTe), where the hydrogen electrode potential is located in the bandgap for GeS, but not for GeTe. As a result, the SR spectra showed that the muonium forms in GeS, while it does not in GeTe. In GeS, 58 of the muons formed muoniums. The activation energy was obtained as meV. The hyperfine coupling frequency was GHz, and the Bohr radius of muonium was 1.3 times larger than that in vacuum. These properties indicated that the identified muonium does not form a typical impurity level that affects the electrical properties.

Our zero-field SR experiments revealed the development of critical slowing down of Eu spin fluctuations over a relatively wide critical region above . We also found from Si NMR that the spin fluctuations are strongly suppressed by magnetic field in the paramagnetic state above 20K. These characteristic spin dynamics observed over a wide region of temperature and magnetic field suggest the presence of magnetic frustration in the spin system. Such frustration would underlie the mechanism stabilizing the short-period skyrmion lattice observed in this compound.

At 30 K below a charge-density-wave (CDW) transition, superlattice peaks emerge near nuclear Bragg peaks described by an ordering vector = (0 0 ). In contrast, magnetic peaks appear at with = 0.09 below = 15.4 K, and moves to with = 0.19 below =12.2 K, whereas no distinct change in the magnetic Bragg peak was detected at and . The structural modification with is characterized by an absence of the superlattice peak in (0 0 ). Considering an absence of splitting in magnetic peaks along , the structural transition is mainly ascribed to a displacement of Al ions within the tetragonal -plane. Complex incommensurate magnetic transitions are in stark contrast to a simple collinear commensurate structure in isovalent EuGa. This could stem from incompatible electronic structures with the CDW transition between two compounds.

Using those samples, magnetic and electronic anisotropy has been clarified. Magnetic moment in the ferromagnetic state points to the hexagonal -axis for both compounds. Electronic anisotropy was found in both electrical resistivity and Fermi surface topology. These anisotropic characteristics are accounted for by the unique hexagonal structure.

The Eu ions of the Bridgman-grown crystal are nearly trivalent and fluctuate depending on the temperature. On the other hand, the Eu ions of flux-grown sample are divalent and thermally stable and show spin-glass behavior at low temperatures. Crystallographic analyses identified random replacement of Cu sites by Si only for the flux-grown samples. Such structural randomness leads to spin-glass features.

EuPtSi with the cubic chiral structure exhibits a skyrmion phase under magnetic field. We succeeded in growing high-quality single crystals by the Bridgman method. Fermi surface splitting reflecting the noncentrosymmetric structure was successfully observed experimentally.

被引用回数:34 パーセンタイル:88.7(Physics, Multidisciplinary)The magnetic order in the magnetic-fild-induced so-called A phase of cubic chiral antiferromagnet EuPtSi was investigated by resonant X-ray scattering (RXS) near the Eu edge. The high flux RXS signal under the magnetic field applied along [111] revealed the first and second order satellite magnetic reflections, indicating that the A phase is a triple- magnetic ordered state that is described by three propagation vectors lying in the plane normal to the magnetic field direction; , , and . With the high resolution in the reciprocal space achieved in the RXS measurement, it is suggested that the triple- order strongly couples with the underlying crystal lattice. The triple- magnetic order is discussed in the context of a magnetic skyrmion lattice on which the geometrical frustration may play a crucial role.

The paramagnetic single absorption forms a magnetic splitting profile directly below 4.0 K and the spectrum at 3.9 K consists of the sum of the paramagnetic single absorption and the magnetic splitting absorption, which indicates a first-order transition at 4.0 K. The temperature dependence of the effective hyperfine fields at the Eu nucleus follows a power law indicates a full moment of Eu ions.

Application of hydrostatic pressure up to 8 GPa stabilizes ferromagnetic ordering, suggesting divalent Eu is stable. The Hall effect and resistivity measurements show that EuCuP is a low-carrier ferromagnetic metal with a characteristic resistivity cusp appearing at the ferromagnetic transition temperature.

In the ground state, magnetic peaks emerge at positions represented by =. Upon heating, an additional magnetic peak splitting around 2.5 K was uncovered, indicating a presence of a first-order transition with =. An half-polarized neutron scattering for polarization parallel to Q reveled that polarization antiparallel to Q has stronger intensity in both magnetic phases. This feature clarifies single chiral character of helical structure with moments normal to the ordering vector in both ordered states. Under vertical magnetic field along [1,1,1] in the phase, magnetic peaks form hexagonal patterns in the equatorial scattering plane around nuclear. An ordering vector of the -phase has the similar size in the periodicity to , and could be a hallmark of a formation of skyrmion lattice in EuPtSi.

被引用回数:13 パーセンタイル:60.51(Physics, Multidisciplinary)The magnetic structure of the intermetallic compound EuGa was investigated using single-crystal neutron diffraction with TOF Laue technique on the new diffractometer SENJU at MLF of J-PARC. Despite of the high neutron absorption of Eu, a vast number of diffraction spots were observed without isotope enrichment. The magnetic reflections appeared at 2 below 16 K, indicating that the ordering vector is = (0, 0, 0). The continuous evolution of the magnetic reflection intensity below T follows a squared Brillouin function for = 7/2. By adopting a wavelength-dependent absorption collection, the magnetic structure of EuGa revealed that a nearly full magnetic moment of 6.4 B of Eu lies within the basal plane of the lattice.
