-edge X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and X-ray absorption spectra (XAS) in several rare-earth elements have been studied in pulsed high magnetic fields up to 40 T. XMCD spectrum of Eu in EuNi
(Si
Ge
) shows a characteristic two peak structure, reflecting the valence fluctuation. However, in YbInCu
, it is found that the XMCD spectrum of Yb shows only a single peak. In contrast to XMCD, two absorption bands in XAS are observed in both compounds. The intensity ratio between the two absorption bands changes significantly with increasing magnetic field in these materials, suggesting the field-induced valence change. The high magnetic field XMCD and XAS measurements have also been conducted in an antiferromagnetic heavy fermion compound CeRhSi. The Ce valence is found to be nearly trivalent and insensitive to magnetic field. The XMCD at Ce 
-edge increases rapidly around 26 T corresponding to the metamagnetic transition.

EuPtPはEuとPtPの面が交互積層した結晶構造を持ち、X線吸収分光実験とM
ssbauer分光実験からEuの平均価数は2価と3価の間の中間価数で、大きく温度変化することがわかっている。また、=235Kと=190Kで
軸長の大きな変化を伴う1次相転移があり、これが価数転移や価数(電荷)秩序を伴うものと提案されている。われわれはこの電荷秩序の証拠を得るためにEuの吸収端で共鳴X線回折実験を行った。実験はSPring-8の原子力機構専用ビームラインBL22XUで行った。まず、蛍光スペクトル測定を行い、そこから明瞭な階段状の平均価数の温度変化を得た。続いて禁制反射,超格子反射の探索を行い、中間相で
に、低温相で
に、特徴的なエネルギー依存性を持つ反射を確認した。このエネルギー依存性は、蛍光スペクトルから得られた異常散乱項の虚数成分と、それをKK変換して得られた実数成分に、構造変調に伴う部分をパラメータとして加えると、2価と3価の差スペクトルとして主要な構造を再現することができる。これらの結果から、大まかには、軸方向へ、低温相では2価3価,中間相では2価2価3価という積層電荷秩序構造をとると考えられる。

We report on direct observations of the charge-ordered states in the ternary rare-earth compound EuPtP by means of resonant X-ray diffraction (RXD) at the Eu absorption edge. Based on the inhomogeneous valence states obtained by Mssbauer measurements, it is proposed that two first-order transitions at =246 K and =200 K accompany charge ordering of the Eu valency. We first searched superlattice and forbidden reflections and found (1 1 1) and (1 1 1
1/3) reflections at the low-temperature phase (
) and the intermediate phase (
), respectively. These reflections exhibited characteristic photon-energy dependence, and the measured energy spectra were well reproduced by assuming spatial order of the Eu valency. As a result, we conclude that three-fold and two-fold superstructures of Eu valency exist in EuPtP between and and below , respectively. We also considered a lattice effect as a possible mechanism of charge ordering in metallic EuPtP.
