Determination of site occupancy of boron in 6H-SiC by multiple-wavelength neutron holography

The local structure around boron doped in a 6H-type silicon carbide (SiC) was investigated using neutron holography. Three dimensional atomic images reconstructed from multiple-wavelength holograms revealed the boron substitution for both silicon and carbon. To determine the boron locations accurately, we calculated holograms with varying occupancies of six different sites and fitted the image intensities with those obtained from the experimental holograms by the steepest descent method. As a result, it was found that boron atoms were selectively located at the Si-C-cubic site layer. Furthermore, boundaries right above the boron locations were suggested from the absence of atomic images in the upper region of the reconstruction.

Chemical-pressure-induced point defects enable low thermal conductivity for Mg$$_{2}$$Sn and Mg$$_{2}$$Si single crystals

The development of thermoelectric (TE) materials, which can directly convert waste heat into electricity, is vital to reduce the use of fossil fuels. Mg$$_{2}$$Sn and Mg$$_{2}$$Si are promising TE materials because of their superior TE performance. In this study, for future improvement of the TE performance, point defect engineering was applied to the Mg$$_{2}$$Sn and Mg$$_{2}$$Si single crystals (SCs) via boron (B) doping. Their crystal structures were analyzed via white neutron holography and SC X-ray diffraction. Moreover, nanostructures and TE properties of the B-doped Mg$$_{2}$$Sn and Mg$$_{2}$$Si SCs were investigated. The B-doping increased the chemical pressure on the Mg$$_{2}$$Sn and Mg$$_{2}$$Si SCs, leading to induce vacancy defects as a point defect. No apparent change was observed in electronic transport, but thermal transport was significantly prevented. This study demonstrates that the vacancy defects can be controlled by the chemical pressure, and can aid in achieving a high TE performance for the Mg$$_{2}$$Sn and Mg$$_{2}$$Si SCs.

We have succeeded in visualizing the local atomic structures around Sm in $$R$$B$$_{6}$$ ($$R$$ =Yb, La), in which a rareearth atom is located in the boron cage, using the newly developed technique for local structure investigations, multiple-wavelength neutron holography in a pulsed neutron facility. From the local atomic structures, we were able to clarify the behavior of Sm in the boron cage. Doped Sm in YbB$$_6$$ fluctuates within the boron cage with a mean displacement of 0.25(4) ${AA}$, while that of Sm in LaB$$_6$$ is approximately 0.15 ${AA}$. The Sm doping causes the fluctuation of the first-nearest-neighbor B with a mean displacement of 0.28 ${AA}$, while its effect on La, Yb, and the rest of the boron atoms is negligible. These are the first observations of the local behavior of doped rare-earth atoms and B in rare-earth borides with boron cages.

Preparation, thermoelectric properties, and crystal structure of boron-doped Mg$$_{2}$$Si single crystals

Mg$$_{2}$$Si is a potential thermoelectric (TE) material that can directly convert waste energy into electricity. In expectation of improving its TE performance by increasing electron carrier concentration, the element boron (B) is doped in Mg$$_{2}$$Si single crystals (SCs). Their detailed crystal structures are definitely determined by using white neutron holography and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) measurements. The white neutron holography measurement proves that the doped B atom successfully substitutes for the Mg site. The SC-XRD measurement confirms the B-doping site and also reveals the presence of the defect of Si vacancy (VSi) in the B-doped Mg$$_{2}$$Si SCs. Regarding TE properties, the electrical conductivity, $$sigma$$, and the Seebeck coefficient, S, decreases and increases, respectively, due to the decrease in the electron carrier concentration, contrary to the expectation. The power factor of the B-doped Mg$$_{2}$$Si SCs evaluated from $$sigma$$ and S does not increase but rather decreases by the B-doping.

Effects of Fe doping on anomalous specific heat and XAFS oscillation in antiferromagnetic metal Mn$$_3$$Si

The specific heat of Mn$$_{3-x}$$Fe$$_x$$Si was measured over a wide temperature range. Aside from the lattice and electronic specific heat components, another component had a significant contribution to the specific heat at low temperatures in the case of $$x$$ = 0.2; however, its contribution decreased when $$x$$ = 1.0. It is observed that the net component was retained at temperatures significantly higher than $$T_N$$ for both $$x$$. The XAFS spectra of the Mn $$K$$-edge for $$x$$ = 0 not only indicated a smooth structure near the edge, but also an unusually small amplitude in the extended high energy region; however, these features disappeared with Fe doping. The specific heat and XAFS data were discussed interms of the charge degree of freedom or electronic inhomogeneity.

Multiple-wavelength neutron holography with pulsed neutrons

Local structures around impurities in solids provide important information for understanding the mechanisms of material functions, because most of them are controlled by dopants. For this purpose, the X-ray absorption fine structure method, which provides radial distribution functions around specific elements, is most widely used. However, a similar method using neutron techniques has not yet been developed. If one can establish a method of local structural analysis with neutrons, then a new frontier of materials science can be explored owing to the specific nature of neutron scattering-that is, its high sensitivity to light elements and magnetic moments. Multiple-wavelength neutron holography using the time-of-flight technique with pulsed neutrons has great potential to realize this. We demonstrated multiple-wavelength neutron holography using a Eu-doped CaF$$_{2}$$ single crystal and obtained a clear three-dimensional atomic image around trivalent Eu substituted for divalent Ca, revealing an interesting feature of the local structure that allows it to maintain charge neutrality. The new holography technique is expected to provide new information on local structures using the neutron technique.

Anomalous X-ray scattering experiments on amorphous Ag$$_{0.5}$$(GeSe$$_{3}$$)$$_{0.5}$$ at the K absorption edges of each constituent element has been performed to investigate the local- and intermediate-range structure in this material. This method can provide insight into the structural properties enabling the effect of superionic conductivity in the amorphous phase. The experimental results were analyzed with reverse Monte Carlo modeling, providing the partial structure factors and the corresponding partial pair-distribution functions. A nanometer range phase separation tendency of the Ag atoms over a background of a GeSe$$_4$$ tetrahedral network is observed, which may confirm the view of Ag conduction pathways forming in this phase.

$$^{3}$$Heの中性子吸収断面積が強いスピン選択性を有することを利用した偏極$$^{3}$$Heフィルターは、ビーム調整が不要なため、ビームラインに設置すれば直ぐに使える簡便な中性子スピンフィルター(NSF)として利用できる。そのようなNSF実現のためには、NSFの$$^{3}$$He偏極度${it P}$を定常的にモニタするための核磁気共鳴(NMR)システムの開発が不可欠である。我々は断熱高速通過型(AFP)とパルス型NMRの特徴が相補的であることに着目して2つのシステムを併用した汎用性の高いNMRシステムを開発した。更に、J-PARCの中性子実験装置(BL10)での中性子透過率測定から得られた${it P}$で校正しながら、温度、パルスNMRの振動磁場の大きさや印可時間などの測定条件を変えて、AFPとパルスNMRの信号間の相関を測定した。例えば、パルスNMR測定に起因する減偏極率を0.1%以下になるまでパルスNMRの検出感度を小さくしても、2つのNMR信号間の線形性は確認できた。これらの結果から、我々は開発したNMRシステムが$$^{3}$$He偏極度モニタとして十分機能することを確認した。

中性子偏極実験において測定領域を熱外中性子まで広げることは興味深い。その実現には、$$^{3}$$He自身の核スピンを反転することで、冷から熱外まで幅広いエネルギー領域の中性子のスピン偏極と反転が可能な偏極$$^{3}$$Heスピンフリッパー(PHSF)が重要な役割を果たす。現在、J-PARC/MLFでは「可搬型PHSF」の開発を進めている。この装置は、$$^{3}$$Heガスを封入したガラスセルを、$$^{3}$$Heスピン偏極を保持するための直径20cm,長さ30cmの小型ソレノイド内に設置する。さらに、ガラスセルをレーザー照射することで、光ポンピング法(SEOP)により$$^{3}$$Heを偏極した後に、ソレノイドごと中性子ビームラインに移動することで、可搬型PHSFとして利用する。われわれは、MLFの中性子ビームライン(BL10)で、PHSFの特性試験を行い、$$^{3}$$He核スピン反転前後の中性子透過率比の2次元分布測定から、本装置がPHSFとして十分機能することや、サンプルコイルの簡単な磁気イメージを測定できることを実証した。

J-PARC物質生命科学実験施設(MLF)では、$$^{129}$$Xeの共鳴ピークを用いた中性子-原子核スピン相関項に起因する中性子偏極能力を検知する実験が計画されている。スピン交換光ポンピング(SEOP)法により低磁場,室温で高偏極可能なXeガスは、中性子光学定理(NOPT)検証に適した標的核になることが期待できる。われわれはNOPTに基づいて、実験の測定量を評価し、偏極Xeガス生成装置を開発し、装置特性のビーム試験を進めてきた。本論文は、実験の現状について報告する。

三角格子反強磁性体CuMnO$$_2$$の磁気相関を研究した。$$T$$$$_{rm N}$$以上で磁気励起は2次元(2D)短距離相関によって特徴づけられる。$$T$$$$_{rm N}$$以下で$$d_{z^ 2}$$軌道にほぼ平行なコリニアー構造に磁気秩序することを確認した。$$c$$軸方向の積層構造は原子の乱れを導入することで反強磁性から強磁性体に変化する。われわれは第二最近接の層間相互作用が積層構造に重要な役割をすることを発見した。$$T$$$$_{rm N}$$以下の磁気励起は三次元長距離磁気秩序に伴う集団励起によって特徴付けられる6meVのエネルギーギャップを持つスピン波励起と、比熱で示されるスピン液体のような二次元励起が観察された。

The pulsed neutron source of J-PARC has started to operate in 2008 in Japan. To study structure of magnetic material and soft matters, polarized neutron scattering techniques are very important and powerful tools. It is urgently necessary for us to develop neutron spin polarizers for pulsed neutron scattering experiments. So we began the development of the in-situ SEOP system aiming to use it as a NSF for incident beam polarization and polarization analysis. In previous test performed by Ino et al., the $$^{3}$$He polarization reached 50% and not saturated yet. After that experiment, we began improving the SEOP system by installing the high power laser diode, the prism beam splitter and optimizing the beam-transform optics. By using this improved system, we performed the polarization test at BL10 in J-PRC and achieved the $$^{3}$$He polarization of 73%. We keep improving this in-situ SEOP system aiming to use it s an incident neutron polarizer at J-PARC.

A polarized $$^{3}$$He neutron spin filter has been applied to polarization analysis on the small-angle neutron scattering spectrometer SANS-J-II at JRR-3. Measurements were taken on silver behenate, which has several coherent peaks in the small-angle region with a background of spin incoherent hydrogen scattering. Here we demonstrate that the coherent and spin incoherent scattering were successfully separated by the polarization analysis using the $$^{3}$$He spin filter on the instrument.

Structure of glasses for $$^{3}$$He neutron spin filter cells

In spin-exchange optical pumping, there is unknown excess relaxation, called the X-factor, that limits attainable $$^{3}$$He polarization. It is known that the X-factor depends on the glass containers. Hence, it is expected that there are cell-to-cell variations in microscopic structure among the cells and that these variations affect the attainable $$^{3}$$He polarization. However, microscopic structure of the glasses for $$^{3}$$He neutron spin filters has not been clarified yet. In this paper, we have performed precise X-ray diffraction measurements for the glasses at SPring-8 using synchrotron radiation. The structural differences are observed between several types of glasses, and also, between the GE180 glass pieces with different thermal treatment. Based on the results, the structural influence on the performance of $$^{3}$$He neutron spin filters is discussed.

Polarized neutron scattering techniques are very important and powerful tools to study the fundamental structures of magnetic materials and soft matters. $$^{3}$$He has a very large absorption cross section for only neutrons in opposite spin state to that of the $$^{3}$$He nucleus. The scattering cross section of $$^{3}$$He is small. These two features allow nuclear spin polarized $$^{3}$$He gas to work as a NSF. Compared with other spin filters such as Heusler alloys and magnetic supermirrors, the $$^{3}$$He gas NSF have following advantages: it can polarize various energy of neutron such as cold, thermal and hot neutrons, it can work for broadband neutrons and it can be used for wide area and large divergence neutron beams. These characteristics of polarized $$^{3}$$He are convenient in use with J-PARC as NSF. We began the development of the on beam SEOP system aiming to use it s a NSF for incident beam polarisation and polarisation analysis. In this paper, we report the current development of SEOP system in Japan.

Research on glass cells for $$^{3}$$He neutron spin filters

Polarized $$^{3}$$He neutron spin filters have attracted much attention because of their available wide energy range for polarizing neutrons and their large solid-angle. To use $$^{3}$$He neutron spin filters for the experiments, it is necessary to produce glass cells with good quality. For this purpose, we made research on the glass cells from several aspects. Firstly, we investigated on the microscopic structure for several glasses by means of X-ray diffraction measurement and tried to find a good measure of evaluating the quality of the cells in terms of their structure. Secondly, we investigated on the glass window, which the laser beam passes through for optical pumping. Thirdly, the cells should be optimized for the polarized neutron scattering experiments and the background from the cells needs to be evaluated. The scattered intensity from the cell in small-angle neutron scattering will also be presented.

Glass cells play an important role in polarized $$^{3}$$He neutron spin filters. To evaluate the scattering and absorption contribution from glass cells during neutron scattering experiments, we measured small-angle scattering and neutron transmission in GE180 and other glasses. To pursue the possibility of being a structural influence on $$^{3}$$He spin relaxation in GE180 glass cells, we performed precise X-ray diffraction measurement using synchrotron radiation at SPring-8. From these measurements, a structural difference was observed among GE180 glasses with different thermal treatments.

Polarized $$^{3}$$He neutron spin filters are promising neutron polarizers in polarized neutron scattering experiments at facilities with two-dimensional detectors and pulsed neutron source. Although they are now operational at several institutions, it is still desired to be developed. Among required factors for the development, the study on the glasses in the filters is one of the important issues. In this paper, we report our recent investigation on the glass cells such as X-ray diffraction measurements and the measurements of the degree of circular polarization of the transmitted laser light through the glass window in the filter.

4SEASONS is a Fermi chopper spectrometer, which is in operation in Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF), J-PARC. It is intended to provide high-efficiency measurement of weak inelastic signals on novel spin and lattice dynamics with thermal neutrons. For this purpose, the spectrometer utilizes the coupled moderator and advanced instrumental design such as an elliptic-shaped converging neutron guide with high-critical angle supermirrors inside, long (2.5 m) position sensitive detectors, and a Fermi chopper feasible for multiple-incident-energy (multi-$$E_{rm i}$$) measurement with the repetition rate multiplication technique. Here we show detailed design of the spectrometer, evaluation of its performance, and some examples of measurements.
