Observation of adsorbed hydrogen species on supported metal catalysts by inelastic neutron scattering

Inelastic neutron scattering (INS) enables direct and selective observation of H species due to the extremely large incoherent neutron scattering cross section of a hydrogen atom. In the present study, the adsorbed H species on some heterogeneous precious metal catalysts supported by alumina and carbon black were investigated by in situ INS spectroscopy with a newly designed sample cell. Three alumina-supported metal catalysts having Pt, Pd, and Rh metal nanoparticles with different particle sizes exhibited different INS spectra in intensities and band distribution. Observation of the H species on the metal nanoparticles and the alumina surface revealed their properties. In addition, the H atoms stored in Pd nanoparticles were observed as palladium hydride. In contrast, the H species on a Pt catalyst supported by carbon black were found to be strongly adsorbed on the carbon support.

Identification of hydrogen species on Pt/Al$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$ by ${it in situ}$ inelastic neutron scattering and their reactivity with ethylene

Hydrogen (H) species adsorbed on catalyst surfaces are key intermediates in catalytic hydrogenation reactions over supported metal catalysts. However, individual identification of H species on the metal catalysts has not been established to date. Here, we elucidated the H species on Pt/Al$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$ by the combination of ${it in situ}$ inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and density functional theory (DFT). Several H species in the presence of H$$_{2}$$ were successfully identified at different sites on the Pt surface and Al$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$ support. The ${it in situ}$ INS and FT-IR measurements revealed that the hydride/atop Pt-H, bridged perimeter/terrace Pt-H-Pt, and threefold Pt$$_{3}$$-H are active intermediates in the C$$_{2}$$H$$_{4}$$ hydrogenation reaction, whereas the edge Pt-H-Pt is a rather inert species. In addition, the ${it in situ}$ measurements indicate that the Al$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$ itself acts as hydrogen storage material by mediating AlO-H and Al-H-Al species, which serve H species in the C$$_{2}$$H$$_{4}$$ hydrogenation reaction.

Measurement of the angular distribution of $$gamma$$-rays after neutron capture by $$^{139}$$La for a T-violation search

原子核が熱外中性子を共鳴吸収する反応において、弱い相互作用起因のパリティ対称性の破れが核子間相互作用の最大10$$^{6}$$倍増幅される現象が観測されている。この反応では時間反転対称性の破れにも同様の増幅効果があることが理論的に予言されており、全く新しい手法で未知の時間反転対称性の破れを世界最高感度で探索できる可能性がある。しかし、その増幅率は全ての核種で未知であり、この手法がもつ可能性を具体的に議論できていなかった。本研究ではJ-PARC, MLF, BL04のGe検出器群を用いて、$$^{139}$$La(n,$$gamma$$)反応の角度分布測定を行い、世界で初めて$$^{139}$$Laで時間反転対称性の破れの増幅率を求めることに成功した。この結果を用いて、実験に必要な測定時間を見積もると、偏極率40%のLa核偏極技術、偏極率70%, 79atm・cmの$$^3$$He Spin Filterを用意すれば、1.4日の測定で世界最高感度で時間反転対称性の破れ探索実験が可能であることが判明した。現在原子力機構では高性能な$$^3$$He Spin Filterの開発を行なっており、本発表では$$gamma$$線の角度分布測定の結果、及び共用ビームラインに適用するための$$^3$$He Spin Filterの開発の現状について発表する。

What is the limit of high Z nucleus, where is the island of stability, is one of the focus of nuclearphysics. Key ingredient to stabilize nucleus in this super-heavy region is shell structure and Z=114,120, N=184 are predicted to be new magic numbers. However, it is not easy to produce such nucleus and study the shell structure. In order to access such shell structure, we are focusing on the deformed nucleus of the heavy mass region including Es isotopes. By studying the excited states, spin and parity, and deformation, we will be able to access the single-particle orbital which is supposed to generate new shell structure at Z=114, 120, N=184 and try to investigate nuclear shell structure in the super-heavy mass region. Coulomb excitation experiment at the Tokai Tandem Accelerator Laboratory of JAEA is planned to measure B(E2) values of low-lying states in $$^{254}$$Es and to deduce the deformation. Unknown high-lying states of $$^{254}$$Es will be also investigated for further understanding of nuclear structure in this region. We obtained $$^{254}$$Es via an international collaboration with ORNL. CAGRA will be used to measure the $$gamma$$ rays from $$^{254}$$Es. Experimental plan and preparation progress will be presented.

Study of $$^{249}$$Cf by Coulomb excitation gamma-ray spectroscopy

The study of nuclei near Z=100 and N=152 provides a link to the nuclear structure of super-heavy elements in the Island of Stability. At the JAEA Tandem accelerator, safe Coulomb-excitation $$gamma$$-ray spectroscopy of $$^{249}$$Cf was carried out for the first time. In the experiment, a 20$$mu$$g/cm$$^2$$ $$^{249}$$Cf target was irradiated with stable beams of $$^{18}$$O and $$^{58}$$Ni. The projectiles were detected using two Silicon stripped detectors, while the $$gamma$$ rays emitted by $$^{249}$$Cf were detected using 4 HPGe detectors and 4 LaBr$$_3$$(Ce) scintillators. The intensity of the measured E2 transitions combined with the angular information from the Si detector data and other experimental parameters were used as an input in the GOSIA code to deduce the B(E2) value of the observed transitions which is linked to the quadrupole deformation of the nucleus. The measured B(E2) will be compared to the systematics of the region and future plans will be discussed.
