Current status of extreme environment single crystal neutron diffractometer SENJU, and latest news from JRR-3

The TOF-Laue single crystal neutron diffractometer, SENJU installed at BL18 in MLF, J-PARC aims at structural studies in extreme sample environments. The instrument is equipped with 36 two-dimensional scintillation detectors arranged cylindrically around the demountable sample chamber, and one additional detector beneath the sample. The standard sample environment in SENJU is standard 4 K CCR, in which the fixed-$${chi}$$ two-axes goniometers driven by piezo-based motors are attached to the cold finger. This enables us to rotate a sample without moving the cryostat, which helps to reduce background. Since the first beam in 2012, several improvements were achieved, and the system can be steadily used in user programs. In addition to the 4 K CCR, other apparatuses including superconducting magnet were tested and used in the experiment. I will present representative data taken on SENJU, and latest news from the research reactor JRR-3.

Recovery and progress in sample environment at JRR-3

JRR-3 has not been in operation since the end of 2010, because of the new regulatory requirement established after the large earthquake and the concomitant accident at the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power plant. Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) submitted an application document for the restart of JRR-3 in 2014 which is still under the review. A recent official announcement by JAEA tells an expected restart of JRR-3 in the beginning of 2018. In parallel to this reviewing process, there is ongoing joint activities between JAEA and university groups for the recovery. This includes reorganization of experimental hall which results in securement of sample environment area. We are also trying to restart sample environment equipments safely after a long sleeping. We will show our strong efforts to realize "Science with Safety" in JRR-3. In addition, developments on sample environment have been made without neutron.

日本原子力研究開発機構の研究用原子炉JRR-3は現在停止中で、研究炉加速器管理部をはじめ関係部署が再稼働に向け活動している。その中で利用施設及び中性子ビーム実験装置においても安全管理に関する取組みを行い、利用運転再開のために保守点検を行うとともに動作確認作業を進めた。今回は安全管理に関する取組みと中性子ビーム実験装置の現状を報告する。
