Serpentinization and magmatism weaken the lithosphere and facilitate mantle exhumation during magma-poor rifting and seafloor spreading. However, the competing mechanisms that control exhumation along detachment faults remain poorly constrained. IODP Expedition 402 drilled a young oceanic basin in the Tyrrhenian Sea and recovered in-situ mantle sections. Drilled cores consist of one sequence of variably deformed granitic intrusions intercalated with slivers of peridotites and basalts, and another of primarily serpentinized peridotites with heterogeneous deformation and local granitic intrusions. Geochronologic and geochemical data constrain that the granites crystallized at 4 Ma at ~7 km and rapidly exhumed to the seafloor within ~0.5 Myrs, requiring extension rates of ~2 cm/year. Structural observations show that these granites accommodated significant post-crystallization strain during exhumation and enhanced localization of detachment faulting. Stable isotopes record serpentinization temperatures of 200$$^{circ}$$C, suggesting serpentinization occurred after the onset of deformation. These observations, demonstrate that felsic melts, when present, can nucleate strain localization along detachment faults and enable continental breakup and mantle exhumation.

The new isotopes $$^{235}$$Bk and $$^{231}$$Am were investigated using the gas-filled recoil separator SHANS2. They were identified by measuring radioactive decay chains originating from $$^{235}$$Bk produced via the $$^{197}$$Au($$^{40}$$Ar,2n)$$^{235}$$Bk reaction. The $$alpha$$ energy and half-life were determined for these isotopes. A systematic analysis reveals significant discrepancies between the experimental data and the theoretical predictions for the isotopes of Bk and Am, which warrant further investigation.

Analysis of vibration characteristics using a multi-point observation system for high temperature engineering test reactor; Effects of irregular shapes and differences in structural type on building response

Yamakawa, Koki*; Nishida, Akemi; 3 of others*

Nihon Kenchiku Gakkai Kozokei Rombunshu, 91(839), p.121 - 132, 2026/01

We proposed a multi-point observation system for nuclear power plants that involving the installation of numerous accelerometers on each floor. To demonstrate its effectiveness in buildings with irregular shapes, such as those featuring an atrium or setback, we installed this system at the High-Temperature Engineering Test Reactor (HTTR) of the Japan Atomic Energy Agency. Analysis of the seismic records acquired by the system successfully identified seismic behavior believed to be caused by the building's irregular shape. Furthermore, the study demonstrated the effectiveness of a multi-point observation system in understanding the three-dimensional behavior of irregularly shaped buildings.

An experiment to search for Og isotopes using the $$^{50}$$Ti beam impinging on $$^{248}$$Cm target was performed at RIKEN Nishina Center. The optimal beam energy was determined from the quasielastic barrier distribution extracted from the excitation function of quasielastic backscattering. As a result, no Og decay was found, enabling only an estimation of the sensitivity for one event of 0.27 pb, and the 1$$sigma$$ cross section upper limit of 0.50 pb.
