Granitic intrusions enhance strain localization and rapid mantle exhumation along an oceanic detachment fault

Serpentinization and magmatism weaken the lithosphere and facilitate mantle exhumation during magma-poor rifting and seafloor spreading. However, the competing mechanisms that control exhumation along detachment faults remain poorly constrained. IODP Expedition 402 drilled a young oceanic basin in the Tyrrhenian Sea and recovered in-situ mantle sections. Drilled cores consist of one sequence of variably deformed granitic intrusions intercalated with slivers of peridotites and basalts, and another of primarily serpentinized peridotites with heterogeneous deformation and local granitic intrusions. Geochronologic and geochemical data constrain that the granites crystallized at 4 Ma at ~7 km and rapidly exhumed to the seafloor within ~0.5 Myrs, requiring extension rates of ~2 cm/year. Structural observations show that these granites accommodated significant post-crystallization strain during exhumation and enhanced localization of detachment faulting. Stable isotopes record serpentinization temperatures of 200$$^{circ}$$C, suggesting serpentinization occurred after the onset of deformation. These observations, demonstrate that felsic melts, when present, can nucleate strain localization along detachment faults and enable continental breakup and mantle exhumation.

Nuclear transmutation emerges as a promising approach for reprocessing high-level waste, specifically treating long-lived nuclides like $$^{93}$$Zr from spent fuel. It is essential to accumulate reaction data for these nuclei to advance this prominent treatment and to build a comprehensive understanding of reaction mechanisms. In this study, the residual production cross-sections resulting from proton-induced reactions on $$^{93}$$Zr were measured at 27 MeV/nucleon in inverse kinematics. At the RIKEN-RIBF facility the OEDO beamline was used to deduce production cross-sections for isotopes, $$^{91-93}$$Nb, $$^{91,92}$$Zr, and $$^{88,89}$$Y. Comparing the results from this study and prior research with calculated excitation functions, a moderate agreement is found with theoretical predictions derived from TALYS and CCONE. Despite the potential limitations of low-energy proton-induced reactions for $$^{93}$$Zr transmutation, the measured cross-sections offer valuable insights for future considerations in nuclear-waste treatment facilities. This is particularly relevant for facilities exploring innovative methods, such as accelerator-driven systems.

Quantification of bulk elemental composition for C-type asteroid Ryugu samples with nondestructive elemental analysis using muon beam

Samples from asteroid Ryugu, brought back by asteroid explorer Hayabusa2 are important for investigating the origin and evolution of the solar system. Here, we report the elemental compositions of a 123 mg Ryugu sample determined with a nondestructive muon elemental analysis method. This method is a powerful tool for determining bulk chemical composition, including light elements such as C, N, and O. From the muonic X-ray spectra with three carbonaceous chondrites, the relationship between the elemental composition and muonic X-ray intensity was determined for each element. Calibration curves showed linearity, and the elemental composition of Ryugu was quantitatively determined. The results reflect the average bulk elemental composition of asteroid Ryugu owing to the large amount of samples. Ryugu has an elemental composition similar to that of Orgueil (CI1), and should be classified as CI1. However, the O/Si ratio of Ryugu is 25% lower than that of Orgueil, indicating that Orgueil may have been seriously contaminated by terrestrial materials after its fall to Earth. These results indicate that the Ryugu sample is more representative than the CI chondrites as a solid material of the solar system.
