Observation of Coulomb-assisted nuclear bound state of $$Xi^-$$-$$^{14}$$N system

In an emulsion-counter hybrid experiment performed at J-PARC, a $$Xi^-$$ absorption event was observed which decayed into twin single-$$Lambda$$ hypernuclei. Kinematic calculations enabled a unique identification of the reaction process as $$Xi^{-} + ^{14}$$N$$ rightarrow ^{10}_Lambda$$Be + $$^5_Lambda$$He. For the binding energy of the $$Xi^{-}$$ hyperon in the $$Xi^-$$-$$^{14}$$N system a value of $$1.27 pm 0.21$$ MeV was deduced. The energy level of $$Xi^-$$ is likely a nuclear $$1p$$ state which indicates a weak $${Xi}N$$-$$LambdaLambda$$ coupling.

Prominence of pairing in inclusive ($$p,2p$$) and ($$p,pn$$) cross sections from neutron-rich nuclei

Fifty-five single nucleon removal cross sections from neutron-rich nuclei impinging on a hydrogen target at about 250 MeV/nucleon were measured at the RIKEN RIBF. Systematically higher cross sections are found for proton removal from nuclei with an even number of protons compared to odd-proton number projectiles for the same separation energy, while no even-odd staggering was observed in case of neutron-removal. These observations are linked to paring correlations in the daughter nuclei and the density of bound levels. The effect is particularly strong in loosely bound nuclei.

We report the first observation of the doubly-strange baryon $$Xi(1620)^0$$ in its decay to $$Xi^-pi^+$$ via $$Xi_c^+ rightarrow Xi^- pi^+ pi^+$$ decays based on a $$980,{rm fb}^{-1}$$ data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $$e^+ e^-$$ collider. The mass and width are measured to be 1610.4 $$pm$$ 6.0 (stat) $$^{+5.9}_{-3.5}$$ (syst) MeV$$/c^2$$ and 59.9 $$pm$$ 4.8 (stat) $$^{+2.8}_{-3.0}$$ (syst) MeV, respectively. We obtain 4.0$$sigma$$ evidence of the $$Xi(1690)^0$$ with the same data sample. These results shed light on the structure of hyperon resonances with strangeness $$S=-2$$.

We measure the branching fraction and $$CP$$-violating asymmetry in the decay $$B^0 to pi^0pi^0$$, using a data sample of $$752 times 10^6$$ $$Bbar{B}$$ pairs collected at the $$Upsilon(4S)$$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB $$e^+e^-$$ collider. The obtained branching fraction and direct $$CP$$ asymmetry are $$B(B^0 to pi^0pi^0)=[1.31 pm 0.19 ({rm stat.}) pm 0.18 ({rm syst.})]times10^{-6}$$ and $$A_{CP}= 0.14 pm 0.36 ({rm stat.}) pm 0.12 ({rm syst.})$$, respectively. The signal significance, including the systematic uncertainty, is 6.4 standard deviations. We combine these results with Belle's earlier measurements of $$B^0 to pi^0pi^0$$ and $$B^{pm} to pi^{pm}pi^0$$ to exclude the $$CP$$-violating parameter $$phi_2$$ from the range $$15.5^{circ} < phi_2 < 75^{circ}$$ at 95% confidence.
