Chemical characterization of a volatile dubnium compound, DbOCl$$_3$$

The formation and the chemical characterization of single atoms of dubnium (Db, element 105), in the form of its volatile oxychloride, was investigated using the on-line gas phase chromatography technique, in the temperature range 350 - 600 $$^circ$$C. Under the exact same chemical conditions, comparative studies with the lighter homologs of group-5 in the Periodic Table clearly indicate the volatility sequence being NbOCl$$_3 > $$ TaOCl$$_3 geq$$ DbOCl$$_3$$. From the obtained experimental results, thermochemical data for DbOCl$$_3$$ were derived. The present study delivers reliable experimental information for theoretical calculations on the chemical properties of transactinides.

By employing quasi-free $$alpha$$-cluster-knockout reactions, we obtained direct experimental evidence for the formation of $$alpha$$ clusters at the surface of neutron-rich tin isotopes. The observed monotonous decrease of the reaction cross sections with increasing mass number, in excellent agreement with the theoretical prediction, implies a tight interplay between $$alpha$$-cluster formation and the neutron skin.

Future synchrotron light source using a 5-GeV energy recovery linac (ERL) is under proposal by our Japanese collaboration team, and we are conducting R&D efforts for that. We are developing high-brightness DC photocathode guns, two types of cryomodules for both injector and main superconducting (SC) linacs, and 1.3 GHz high CW-power RF sources. We are also constructing the Compact ERL (cERL) for demonstrating the recirculation of low-emittance, high-current beams using above-mentioned critical technologies.

We have developed a magnetic neutron lens (MNL) based on a sextupole magnet. A neutron beam, which is incident to the sextupole magnet, either converges or diverges depending on the neutron spin state. Small-angle neutron scattering in focusing geometry (FSANS) was proposed to improve the q-resolution and/or measuring efficiency. The MNL is considered to be the most suitable focusing device for FSANS experiments using a polarized neutron beam, since it focuses the polarized neutron beam free from neutron attenuation and scattering by substances. Recently, we have developed the MNLs with sufficiently large apertures and strong focusing power for FSANS experiments. In this study, we evaluate the focusing property of the MNLs for the polarized neutron beam, and performed FSANS experiments using the MNL. The obtained results are discussed.

As a neutron has a magnetic dipole moment, it is accelerated in a magnetic field gradient. Thus, we can control a neutron trajectory free from neutron beam attenuation and scattering using the magnetic field gradient. A sextupole magnetic field functions as a neutron focusing and defocusing lens depending on the neutron spin state. The neutron focusing effect was experimentally verified using a 6-piece permanent sextupole magnet. For the application in practical neutron scattering experiments, a sextupole magnet with a sufficiently large aperture accompanied with strong focusing power is demanded. Recently, a superconducting sextupole magnet, a Halbach-type permanent sextupole magnet and a sextupole pulse electro-magnet have been developed in a project of the development and application of neutron optics. These magnets will be dedicated to practical uses in neutron scattering experiments. In this paper, current status of the development of the magnetic neutron lenses is reported, and their application in the neutron scattering experiments is discussed.

The influence of strong relativistic effects on chemical properties has been interesting in the superheavy element region. Their chemical properties, however, have not been investigated sufficiently because of experimental difficulties owing to their low production rates and short half-lives. In order to elucidate the chemical properties of dubnium (Db, Z = 105), we have conducted on-line isothermal gas chromatographic experiments of oxychloride of group-5 elements. We confirmed the formation of volatile oxychlorides of Db and its lighter homologs Nb and Ta by using $$^{262}$$Db (half-life, $$T_{1/2}$$ = 33.8 s), $$^{88}$$Nb ($$T_{1/2}$$ = 14.5 min.), and $$^{170}$$Ta ($$T_{1/2}$$ = 6.76 min.), respectively. We successfully determined the adsorption enthalpies of the oxychlorides of each element on the quartz surface from their isothermal gas chromatographic behavior. The obtained volatility sequence of the group-5 elements is found to be Nb $$>$$ Ta $$geq$$ Db.
