Development of a laser processing head using a composite-type optical fiberscope to inspect and repair 1-inch heat exchanger pipes

Hozengaku, 8(4), p.37 - 42, 2010/01

A composite-type optical fiberscope was combined with a laser processing head to repair heat exchange pipes of Fast Breeder Reactor (FBR). The head can rotate axially and move back and forth longitudinally in the 1-inch pipes. The property of fiberscope and the motion of the head can successfully observe the pipe's inner surface to find the cracks which should be repaired by laser welding. The project, which aims for developing the integrated system of inspection and repair, proposes an effective cost reduction for maintenance of FBRs by extension of the heat exchanger's lifetime. This report describes the outline of the laser processing head and the basic performance.

In order to maintain FBR heat exchanger tubes, a new probe system was designed. A coupling unit and operational software are key components in the second year. The coupling unit to combine a high energy laser beam and optical fiberscope images was developed. The operational software successfully controlled an eddy current testing device and a laser processing head.

Development of the minimally invasive laser endoscope system using a composite-type optical fiberscope for treatment of uterine cancer in early stage

no journal, ,

We have developed the minimally invasive laser endoscope system using the composite-type optical endoscope of 1.1 mm diameter for treatment of uterine cancer in early stage. The composite-type optical fiberscope consists of an optical fiber for cauterization laser transmission and the optical fiber for image transmission located at that surroundings. This fiberscope can irradiate 50W Yb: fiber laser from center of scope image. In this study, we describe the results of the laser irradiation experiment using the uterus removed from the human body when performed as the 1st step of the system development.

no journal, ,

For the neuroendoscopic surgery, we are developing a new laser-irradiating fiberscope system. In this system, we use a composite-type optical fiberscope (COF) with 1 mm in outer diameter, which can transmit both laser energy and images for observation simultaneously. The diameter of the cautery laser fiber is 0.1 mm, which is located in the center of the imaging fibers. In this animal experimental study, we conducted the laser-irradiation on the femoral artery and vein of a rat using a usual single core fiber of 0.1 mm in outer diameter and the COF in order to assess the availability of this system. As a result, the blood flow decreased to 1/2 or 1/3 after a cauterization with the single core fiber. Furthermore, in the laser irradiation with the COF, the contraction of the artery with minimal heat damage of adjacent tissue was confirmed. Under direct observation with optical fiberscope, the obliteration of arteries was safely and successfully performed.
