Crystal structure, thermodynamic properties, and adiabatic demagnetization refrigeration (ADR) effect in the spin-1/2 triangular antiferromagnet KBaGd(BO$$_3$$)$$_2$$ are reported. With the average nearest-neighbor exchange coupling of 44 mK, this compound shows magnetic order below $$T_N$$ = 263 mK in zero field. The ADR tests reach the temperature of $$T_{min}$$= 122 mK, more than twice lower than $$T_N$$, along with the entropy storage capacity of 192 mJ K$$^{-1}$$ cm$$^{-3}$$ and the hold time of more than 8 h in the PPMS setup, both significantly improved compared to the spin-$$frac{1}{2}$$ Yb$$^{3+}$$ analog. We argue that KBaGd(BO$$_3$$)$$_2$$ shows a balanced interplay of exchange and dipolar couplings that together with structural randomness and geometrical frustration shift $$T_{min}$$to well below the ordering temperature $$T_N$$, therefore facilitating the cooling.

Transport models are the main method to obtain physics information on the nuclear equation of state and in-medium properties of particles from low to relativistic-energy heavy-ion collisions. The Transport Model Evaluation Project (TMEP) has been pursued to test the robustness of transport model predictions to reach consistent conclusions from the same type of physical model. To this end, calculations under controlled conditions of physical input and set-up were performed by the various participating codes. These included both calculations of nuclear matter in a periodic box, which test individual ingredients of a transport code, and calculations of complete collisions of heavy ions. Over the years, five studies were performed within this project. They show, on one hand, that in box calculations the differences between the codes can be well understood and a convergence of the results can be reached. These studies also highlight the systematic differences between the two families of transport codes, known under the names of Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (BUU) and Quantum Molecular Dynamics (QMD) type codes. On the other hand, there still exist substantial differences when these codes are applied to real heavy-ion collisions. The results of transport simulations of heavy-ion collisions will have more significance if codes demonstrate that they can verify benchmark calculations such as the ones studied in these evaluations.

JENDL-4.0 benchmark test with shielding experiments

Shielding Integral Test Working Group, JENDL Committee

JAEA-Research 2021-015, 86 Pages, 2022/03

JAEA-Research-2021-015.pdf:6.15MB

The major revised version of Japanese Evaluated Nuclear Data Library (JENDL), JENDL-4.0, was released in May, 2010. Thus Shielding Integral Test Working Group in JENDL Committee has performed benchmark tests of JENDL-4.0 for the shielding and fusion neutronics fields in order to verify accuracy of JENDL-4.0. We adopted many benchmark experiments: 1) the in-situ and Time-of-Flight (TOF) experiments with DT neutrons at JAEA/FNS, 2) the TOF experiments with DT neutrons at Osaka Univ./OKTAVIAN, 3) the aluminum, iron, nickel and lead experiments with DT neutrons at IPPE, Russia, 4) the iron and stainless steel experiments at ORNL/TSF, US, 5) the ASPIS iron experiment at Winfrith, England, 6) the iron experiments with $$^{252}$$Cf neutron source at KfK, Germany and 7) the iron experiments with $$^{252}$$Cf neutron source at NIST, US. These experiments were analyzed by using the Monte Carlo code MCNP4 or MCNP5 and/or Sn codes ANISN, DOT3.5 and DORT with mainly JENDL-3.3 and JENDL-4.0. The calculated results demonstrated that JENDL-4.0 led to better agreements with the measured data due to revisions of JENDL-3.3 problems.

Agriculture in the boreal and Arctic regions is perceived as marginal, low intensity and inadequate to satisfy the needs of local communities, but another perspective is that northern agriculture has untapped potential to increase the local supply of food and even contribute to the global food system. Policies across northern jurisdictions target the expansion and intensification of agriculture, contextualized for the diverse social settings and market foci in the north. However, the rapid pace of climate change means that traditional methods of adapting cropping systems and developing infrastructure and regulations for this region cannot keep up with climate change impacts. Moreover, the anticipated conversion of northern cold-climate natural lands to agriculture risks a loss of up to 76% of the carbon stored in vegetation and soils, leading to further environmental impacts. The sustainable development of northern agriculture requires local solutions supported by locally relevant policies. There is an obvious need for the rapid development of a transdisciplinary, cross-jurisdictional, long-term knowledge development, and dissemination program to best serve food needs and an agricultural economy in the boreal and Arctic regions while minimizing the risks to global climate, northern ecosystems and communities.

The $$alpha$$-decay branching ratio of 0.52(5)% from the ground state of $$^{180}$$Pt to the ground state of the daughter nucleus $$^{176}$$Os has been determined more precisely than before. The $$^{180}$$Pt was produced as the $$beta$$-decay granddaughter of $$^{180}$$Hg which was produced and separated with the CERN-ISOLDE facility. The reduced $$alpha$$-decay width calculated with the present result has provided a new picture of the systematics for the $$alpha$$-decay width of neutron-deficient Pt isotopes.

A combined method of NEXAFS measurement and DFT-calculation was employed for Cs evaluation in clay minerals. The Cs M$$_{4,5}$$ NEXAFS spectra of Cs halides were analyzed using the DFT-calculations, and were well reproduced by incorporating the core-hole strength. The Cs M$$_{4,5}$$ NEXAFS spectrum of clay minerals was well-reproduced by the DFT-calculations including the major transitions and tail structures with the established method. The further evaluation of this spectrum by charge density suggests that these major transitions and the tail structures likely reflect bonding states and local environments around the Cs atoms. Comparison of electronic states of Cs in the clay mineral with those in the Cs halides by DFT-calculations has shown that the interaction between Cs and the nearest-neighbor atom is largest in the clay mineral, because the energy level of Cs-5s and 5p is closer to that of O-2s and 2p than the s and p orbitals of other alkali metal and alkali earth metal elements.

Integral test of JENDL-3.3 based on shielding benchmarks

Japanese Nuclear Data Comitteee, Shielding Integral Test Working Group (FY2006-2010)

JAEA-Research 2018-017, 72 Pages, 2019/03

JAEA-Research-2018-017.pdf:3.62MB

Integral tests of neutron and photon production data in cross-section libraries based on the Japanese Evaluated Nuclear Data Library, Version 3.3 (JENDL-3.3) have been performed by using shielding benchmarks. An evaluation scheme for shielding benchmark analysis established in the Japanese Nuclear Data Committee (JNDC) was applied to the integral test for 28 materials in 22 medium-heavy nuclei and the compounds such as Lithium, Oxygen, LiF, TEFLON:(CF$$_{2}$$)n, Sodium, Aluminum, Li$$_{2}$$AlO$$_{3}$$, LiAlO$$_{2}$$, Silicon, SiC, Titanium, Li$$_{2}$$TiO$$_{3}$$, Vanadium, Chromium, Manganese, Iron, Cobalt, Nickel, SS304, Copper, Arsenic, Selenium, Zirconium, Li$$_{2}$$ZrO$$_{3}$$, Niobium, Molybdenum, Tungsten and Mercury. Calculations were made by using a continuous-energy Monte Carlo code MCNP and multi-group discrete ordinates codes ANISN, DORT and TORT. Calculations with JENDL-3.2, ENDF/B-VI, EFF-2, FENDL-1 and FENDL-2 were also made for comparison. The results of JENDL-3.3 were generally satisfactory and the cross-section libraries generated with JENDL-3.3 were validated to shielding applications for fission and fusion reactors.
