MIRS is built at LESIA-Paris Observatory in collaboration with four other French laboratories, collaboration and financial support of CNES and close collaboration with JAXA and MELCO. The instrument is designed to fully accomplish MMX's scientific and measurement objectives. MIRS will remotely provide near-infrared spectral maps of Phobos and Deimos containing compositional diagnostic spectral features that will be used to analyze the surface composition and to support the sampling site selection. MIRS will also study Mars atmosphere, in particular to spatial and temporal changes such as clouds, dust and water vapor.

The spent PUREX solvent containing U and Pu is generated from the reprocessing process of spent nuclear fuel. The nuclear material removal is important for the safe storage or disposal of the spent solvent. Our previous study revealed that the adsorbent with the iminodiacetic acid (IDA) functional group is one of the most promising materials for designing the nuclear material recovery process. Accordingly, an IDA-type adsorbent was synthesized by using graft polymerization technology or a chemical reaction to improve the adsorption rate and capacity. The synthesized IDA-type adsorbent was characterized by micro particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analyses. The micro-PIXE analysis revealed that Zr was adsorbed on the whole synthesized adsorbents and quantified the microamount of adsorbed Zr. Moreover, EXAFS suggested that Zr in the aqueous solution and solvent can be trapped by the IDA group with different mechanisms.

The masses of Es and Md were measured for the first time. Using the masses of Md as anchor points for decay chains, the masses of heavier nuclei, up to Bh and Mt, were determined. These new masses were compared with theoretical global mass models and demonstrated to be in good agreement with macroscopic-microscopic models in this region. The empirical shell gap parameter derived from three isotopic masses was updated with the new masses and corroborate the existence of the deformed neutron shell closure for Md and Lr.

The nuclei were produced via fusion-evaporation reactions and separated from projectilelike and targetlike particles using GARIS-II before being stopped in a helium-filled gas cell. Time-of-flight spectra for three isobar chains, Fr-Rn-At-Po, Fr- Rn-At-Po-Bi, and Fr-Rn-At, were observed. Precision atomic mass values were determined for Fr, Rn, and At. Identifications of Bi, Po, Rn, and At were made with N10 detected ions, representing the next step toward use of mass spectrometry to identify exceedingly low-yield species such as superheavy element ions.

The large six-axis multi-anvil high-pressure press designed for ToF neutron diffraction experiments enables routine data collection at high pressures and high temperatures up to 10 GPa and 2000 K, respectively. To obtain clean data, the beamline is equipped with the incident slits and receiving collimators to eliminate parasitic scattering from the high-pressure cell assembly. The high performance of the diffractometer for the resolution ( / 0.6%) and the accessible -spacing range (0.2-8.4 ) together with low-parasitic scattering characteristics enables precise structure determination of crystals and liquids under high pressure and temperature conditions.

We are attempting to reveal uplift/denudation history of the Yoro-Suzuka-Nunobiki mountains, southwest Japan, by using apatite fission-track (AFT) thermochronology. We obtained AFT ages of 47-30 Ma. The ages are younger in the central and southern part of the Suzuka Range and get older to the north and south. Inverse thermal modeling based on the AFT ages and lengths indicates the difference among the ages reflect amount of denudation accommodate with the mountains uplifting in the past few million years. These results imply the process of the mountain uplifting of this area is more complicated than the developments of the basins propagating from south to north.

For the subroutine use in the existing fuel behavior analysis code, the formula is designed putting emphasis on simplicity and quickness rather than accuracy. The accuracy of the formula is confirmed by comparing with the detailed calculation with SWAT code, and also with the post irradiation examination (PIE) results of the fuel pin irradiated at the experimental fast reactor JOYO. As a result, the formula is found to evaluate the helium amount with the difference of less than about 10% from the detailed calculation and from the PIE results. Based on these results, the formula is installed in the fuel behavior analysis code for the simulation of helium behavior in fast reactor fuels.

The measured helium solubilities were found to lie within the scatter of the available data, but to be much lower than those for the polycrystalline samples. The diffusion analysis was conducted based on a hypothetical equivalent sphere model and the simple Fick's law. The helium diffusion coefficient was determined by using the pre-exponential factor and activation energy as the fitting parameters for the measured and calculated fractional releases of helium. The optimized diffusion coefficients were in good agreement with those obtained by a nuclear reaction method reported in the past. It was also found that the pre-exponential factors of the determined diffusion coefficients were much lower than those analyzed in terms of a simple interstitial diffusion mechanism.

High amount of He is generated in MA-bearing fuel during irradiation and storage periods compared with that in U or U-Pu fuel. Laboratory scale experiments, post irradiation examinations and modeling study were carried out in order to understand the He behavior in MA-bearing oxide fuel. Diffusion characteristics of He in single-crystal UO were investigated by the Knudsen effusion mass spectrometry. Effects of the He accumulation on lattice and bulk expansion of oxide pellets were examined by use of alpha-decay of Cm. Post irradiation examinations of 0.5%Am-MOX fuel irradiated at a fast test reactor JOYO were carried out, concentrating on the He behavior in the fuel pellets. A model describing the He behavior in MA-MOX fuel was constructed based on the principle processes, such as generation, diffusion, equilibrium and release to outer gaseous phase. By use of the model as a subroutine of a conventional fuel behavior analysis code, the He behavior in MA-MOX fuel for fast reactors was simulated.

The European FP-6 integrated project EUROTRANS was devoted to management of high-level wastes from nuclear power plants, focusing on MA transmutation in ADS. The object of the project was the assessment of the design and feasibility of an industrial ADS prototype dedicated to MA transmutation. JAEA joined in the project as one of partners. This paper summarizes the ADS fuel development carried out in this project. As for the oxide fuel, a primary candidate, the results of design study, performance in normal operation, safety analysis, irradiation tests and out-of-pile property measurements are described. As for the nitride fuel, an alternative of oxide fuel, the results of irradiation tests and out-of-pile property measurements, and the progress of pyrochemical process for spent fuel treatment are described.
