AMATERAS is a cold-neutron disk-chopper spectrometer in MLF, J-PARC. The construction of main part of the spectrometer has been completed in spring of 2009. Soon after that, we have started the commissioning work on AMATERAS. The performance of AMATERAS has been examined by test experiments in the course of commissioning. In parallel to these works, we have started the user program on AMATERAS from December 2009 and we are getting scientific results from our spectrometer. In this presentation, we will report the current status of AMATERAS including the results of performance tests and some of examples of scientific outputs.

Proceedings of 11th International Conference on Environmental Remediation and Radioactive Waste Management (ICEM '07) (CD-ROM), 8 Pages, 2007/00

A hydrogeological conceptual model has been developed based on pressure responses observed at multilevel pressure monitoring zones in seven boreholes and surface tilt data in and around the Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory site. Pressure changes caused by some earthquakes, cross-hole hydraulic testing, and shaft excavation activities are considered. Surface tilt has been measured from the half way of the shaft excavation phase. Continuous monitoring with some numerical analysis during the shaft excavation phase show the existence of the flow barrier fault predicted from the surface-based investigation phase and hydraulic parameter around the shafts.

The magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) of core-level absorption [x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS)] spectra in the soft x-ray region has been measured for the ferromagnetic Heusler alloys Co$$_{2}$$TiSn, Co$$_{2}$$ZrSn, and Co$$_{2}$$NbSn. The many-peak structures which are clearly observed in the Co 2p-3d XAS-MCD spectra cannot be well explained by atomic multiplet calculations but are better explained by the Co 3d unoccupied states predicted by linear muffin-tin orbital atomic sphere approximation band structure calculations. The MCD spectra show an obvious contribution of the orbital angular momentum component to the magnetic moment in these alloys. The ratio between the orbital angular momentum and spin derived from the MCD spectra varies by more than a factor of 2 within these alloys. The mechanism of this variation is discussed in comparison with the band structure calculations.

no journal, ,

By using a new method for accurately estimating a change in groundwater volume by an inverse analysis of tilt data, groundwater flow at the site of Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory in the Tono district, Japan, was evaluated during excavation of two shafts, based on tilt data measured by four tiltmeters with a resolution of 10$$^{-9}$$ radians. The method developed in this study reproduced the tilt data accurately, and the results obtained by the inverse analysis showed that heterogeneous flow of groundwater occured during the excavation and groundwater came mainly from sedimentary rocks lying between two faults. The latter is consistent with the previous prediction that these faults have a low permeability and may act as a flow barrier.

4SEASONS is a chopper-type inelastic neutron spectrometer, and one of the day-one instruments at the spallation neutron source facility in Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC). The targeted energy range is 5-300meV, and the spectrometer is optimized in intensity in this energy range by moderating the resolutions ($$Delta E/E_i sim 6$$% at $$E=0$$), by incorporating an efficient beam transport system, and by realizing multi incident energy ($$E_i$$) measurement. The high intensity and efficiency available at 4SEASONS make this spectrometer suitable for study of novel quantum phenomena in high-$$T_c$$ superconductors and related systems. In the present paper, we will report the current status of the development and the construction of 4SEASONS, such as construction of the vacuum tank and the shielding, development of the new Fermi chopper for the multi-$$E_i$$ measurement, 2.5m-long $$^3$$He PSDs, and the beam transport system.

4SEASONS; A High-intensity chopper spectrometer for inelastic neutron scattering at J-PARC/MLF

4SEASONS is one of the neutron chopper spectrometers in J-PARC/MLF. It is intended to provide very high counting rate up to 300 meV neutron energy with medium resolution ($$Delta E/E_i sim 6$$% at $$E=0$$) to efficiently collect weak inelastic signals from novel spin and lattice dynamics especially in high-$$T_c$$ superconductors and related materials. To achieve this goal, the spectrometer equips advanced instrumental design such as an elliptic-shaped converging neutron guide coated with high-$$Q_c$$ ($$m=3$$-4) supermirror, long-length (2.5 m) $$^3$$He PSDs arranged cylindrically inside the vacuum scattering chamber. Furthermore, the spectrometer is ready for multi-incident-energy measurements by the repetition rate multiplication method with a special Fermi chopper, and polarization analysis with $$^3$$He spin filters. 4SEASONS is now under construction and will be ready to use in December 2008. In this paper, we show the design of 4SEASONS and current status of its construction.
