Applications for maintenance program on piping support of prototype fast breeder reactor Monju are studied. Based on degradation mechanism, snubbers in Monju primary cooling system showed lifetime more than the plant lifetime of 30 years by experiments conservatively. For the first step during construction, visual inspection on accessible all supports could be available. In that visual inspection, mounting conditions and damages of all accessible supports could be monitored. One of major features of the Monju primary piping system is large thermal expansion due to large temperature difference between maintenance and operation conditions. Thanks to that large thermal expansion, integrity of the piping support could be monitored by measuring piping displacement. When technologies of piping displacement monitoring are matured in Monju, visual inspection on piping support could be shifted to piping displacement monitoring. At that stage, the visual inspection could be limited only on representative supports.

A maintenance management required to prototype nuclear power reactors is proposed. Monitoring and control of sodium impurity and thermal transient are extremely important for sodium boundary maintenance for sodium-cooled fast reactors. At the fast stage of the prototype reactor Monju operation, degradation mechanism on the piping should be demonstrated based on operation experiences. Therefore inspection on a representative position for crack indication and pipe thickness is proposed. Due to less experience of SFR plants, early detection of boundary failure is considered. For a matured operation stage, when degradation mechanism is well demonstrated based on inspection data, inspection cycle could be extended. And for commercial reactors, maintenance without inspection will be established based on accumulated operation experiences including those of the prototype reactor Monju.

We are attempting to reveal uplift/denudation history of the Yoro-Suzuka-Nunobiki mountains, southwest Japan, by using apatite fission-track (AFT) thermochronology. We obtained AFT ages of 47-30 Ma. The ages are younger in the central and southern part of the Suzuka Range and get older to the north and south. Inverse thermal modeling based on the AFT ages and lengths indicates the difference among the ages reflect amount of denudation accommodate with the mountains uplifting in the past few million years. These results imply the process of the mountain uplifting of this area is more complicated than the developments of the basins propagating from south to north.

Polished thin sections of the granite were reacted with solutions containing 10 M of Eu(III) and analyzed using EPMA and LA-ICP-MS. The Eu enrichment up to 6 wt.% was observed on most of the biotite grains. The Eu-enriched parts commonly lose K, which is the interlayer cation of biotite, indicating that the sorption mode is cation exchange in the interlayer. Batch Eu(III) sorption experiments on granite and biotite powders were conducted. The macroscopic sorption behavior of biotite was consistent with that of granite. The obtained sorption edges can be reproduced reasonably by the modeling considering single-site cation exchange reactions. Granite is complex mineral assemblages. However, the combined microscopic and macroscopic approaches revealed that elementary reactions by single phase can be representative for the bulk sorption reaction in complex mineral assemblages.

ZrSn, and Co
NbSn. The many-peak structures which are clearly observed in the Co 2p-3d XAS-MCD spectra cannot be well explained by atomic multiplet calculations but are better explained by the Co 3d unoccupied states predicted by linear muffin-tin orbital atomic sphere approximation band structure calculations. The MCD spectra show an obvious contribution of the orbital angular momentum component to the magnetic moment in these alloys. The ratio between the orbital angular momentum and spin derived from the MCD spectra varies by more than a factor of 2 within these alloys. The mechanism of this variation is discussed in comparison with the band structure calculations.

A capillary tube introduces the gases under atmospheric pressure into a mass filter installed in a vacuum chamber. The CGM-MS detected gaseous substances, such as sulfur dioxide, benzene and chlorobenzene, with detectable sensitivity of 0.7-1 ppmv. The monitoring system was also applied for the analysis of the products formed in electron beam irradiation of trichloroethylene (TCE) and air mixture. Dichloroacetyl chloride, carbonyl chloride (COCl), and chlorine (Cl
) were quantitatively analyzed. Trichloroethylene and the products were oxidized and completely converted into carbon dioxide, Cl
, and hydrochloric acid at 15 kGy. Carbonyl chloride is dissolved in an alkaline solution to be automatically oxidized into CO
and Cl
. The combination of the irradiation and the dissolution of the irradiated gas decreased to 7 from 15 kGy for the complete oxidation of TCE and the products.
