Experiments on Concrete-loaded core in the modified STACY

In order to investigate the effect on criticality characteristics of fuel debris containing concrete composition in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, critical experiments loaded concrete rods were conducted in the modified STACY. The experimental cores of the modified STACY were composed of light water, fuel rods, and concrete rods with grid plates with 15.0-mm lattice intervals in the core tank. Each fuel rod consisted of a zirconium alloy clad tube (9.5-mm outer diameter) and UO$$_{2}$$ pellets (8.2-mm diameter) with 4.98wt.% 235U enrichment. Each concrete rod was composed of concrete simulant pellets (7.0-mm diameter) and an aluminum alloy clad tube (9.5-mm outer diameter). The concrete simulant pellets were fabricated using an aggregate-free mortar in order to ensure a uniform composition of the pellets, and the composition was evaluated by chemical analysis. Three experimental cores were configurated with 9, 25 and 69 concrete rods. The critical water level data were obtained. An effect of composition uncertainty of the concrete simulant pellet was estimated by sensitivity analysis using MCNP6.2 with JENLD-4.0. The sensitivity analysis estimated the effect to be less than 3 pcm. The calculation results performed using MCNP6.2 with ENDF/B-VII.1, JENDL-4.0, and JENDL-5 libraries showed a tendency to overestimate the multiplication factor according to increasing the loading amount of the concrete rods.

JAEA has modified the STACY from a homogeneous system using solution fuel to a heterogeneous system using fuel rods in order to obtain criticality characteristics of fuel debris. The modification of the STACY was completed in December 2023. A series of performance inspections were conducted for the start of experimental operations. A new thermal power calibration is required for the performance inspections in order to operate at less than 200 W, which is the permitted thermal power. However, the thermal power measurement method and calibration data used in the former STACY is no longer available due to the modification of the modified STACY. We measured the thermal power of the STACY using the activation method that was improved to adapt to the measurement condition and calibrated the power meter system. Since the positions where activation foils could be installed were very limited, the thermal power was evaluated using numerical calculations supplemented by experimental data. Neutron flux data at the positions of the activation foil was measured by the activation method. Neutron distribution in the core was calculated by the Monte Carlo code MVP. A response function of the activation foil was calculated using the PHITS. The uncertainty of the thermal power measurement was conservatively estimated to be about 15%. Four operations were conducted for the thermal power measurement. The power meter was calibrated by using three operational data and tested with the one operational data. It was found that the indicated value of the meter adjusted by the STACY before the modification work would tend to overestimate the actual output by about 40%. In addition, the current calibration was able to calibrate the meter to within 3% accuracy.

Solvent extraction behaviors of rhodium and palladium in nitric acid solutions using amide extractants

Rhodium (Rh) and Palladium (Pd) in high-level radioactive waste are primarily fission products. This Study focused on understanding the extraction behavior of these platinum group elements (PGEs) using the novel extractants ${it N,N,N',N',N'',N''}$-hexaoctylnitriloacetamide (HONTA) and alkyl diamideamine (ADAAM). Both extractants showed affinity for Pd, with distribution coefficients significantly exceeding 1, demonstrating their effectiveness in Pd separation. In contrast, the distribution coefficients for Rh were consistently below 10 $$^{-1}$$, indicating low extraction efficiency from nitric acid. However, by leveraging the salting-out effect with calcium nitrate hydrate, a distribution coefficient of $$sim$$570 for Rh was achieved using HONTA. To overcome the difficult back-extraction of PGEs with HONTA, experiments were conducted using HEDTA and thiourea. Back-extraction with HEDTA in high-concentration nitric acid ($$>$$2M) resulted in $$sim$$90% extraction of Pd, while thiourea-based back-extraction with nitric acid yielded over 40% extraction for Rh, with the maximum of 62.7% achieved using hydrochloric acid.

Quantum metric and Berry curvature are two fundamental and distinct factors to describe the geometry of quantum eigenstates. While Berry curvature is known for playing crucial roles in several condensed-matter states, quantum metric, which was predicted to induce new classes of topological phenomena, has rarely been touched, particularly in an ambient circumstance. Using a topological chiral antiferromagnet Mn$$_{3}$$Sn adjacent to Pt, at room temperature, we successfully manipulate the quantum-metric structure of electronic states through its interplay with the nanoscale spin texture at the Mn$$_{3}$$Sn/Pt interface. This is manifested by a time-reversal-odd second-order Hall effect that is robust against extrinsic electron scattering, in contrast to any transport effects from the Berry curvature. We also verify the flexibility of controlling the quantum-metric structure, as the interacting spin texture can be tuned by moderate magnetic fields or by interface engineering via spin-orbit interactions. Our work paves a way for harnessing the quantum-metric structure to unveil emerging topological physics in practical environments and to build applicable nonlinear devices.

Validation of integrated thermal power measurement using solution fuel STACY experimental data for modified STACY performance test

To conduct integrated thermal power measurements for the performance test of the modified STACY, we re-analyzed the experimental data measured in the solution fuel STACY using the activation method. We validated its feasibility under the limited number of activation detectors. The re-analyzed results of the activation method by using MVP and PHITS with JENDL-4.0 indicated that the effect of the difference of the position between activation detectors was small enough, and the results agreed with that of the fission product analysis within almost 10%. It is conceivable that the activation method could be adopted instead of the fission product analysis.

Frustrated magnetic materials can remain disordered to the lowest temperatures. Such is the case for Ba$$_3$$CuSb$$_2$$O$$_9$$, which is magnetically anisotropic at the atomic scale but curiously isotropic on mesoscopic length and time scales. We find that the frustration on the triangular lattice is imprinted in a nanostructured honeycomb lattice of Cu$$^{2+}$$ ions that resists a coherent static Jahn-Teller distortion. The resulting two-dimensional random-bond spin-1/2 system on the honeycomb lattice has a broad spectrum of spin-dimer like excitations and low-energy spin degrees of freedom that retain.

The establishment of the breeding blanket technology is one of the most important engineering issues on the DEMO development. For the DEMO blanket, developments of the structural materials and functional materials such as tritium breeder and neutron multiplier. Which should be used under the savior circumstance such as high neutron fluence, high temperature and strong magnetic field, are urgent issues. In the Broader Approach activities initiated by EU and Japan, developments of reduced activation ferritic martensitic steels as a DEMO blanket structural material, SiC/SiC composites, advanced tritium breeders and neutron multiplier for DEMO blankets, are planed as common interest issues of EU and Japan. This paper describes the overview of the development program.

In order to understand the criticality characteristics of the fuel debris generated by the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, it is essential to obtain critical experiment data that includes reactor structural materials such as iron and concrete that are considered to be contained in the fuel debris. To gather such critical experiment data, JAEA had conducted a major modification of the critical assembly STACY, and the modified STACY achieved first criticality in March 2024. In this presentation, we will discuss the experiments conducted in the modified STACY, with a particular focus on iron, which is considered to have a significant impact on criticality safety due to its strong neutron absorption effect.

JAEA resumed Static Experiment Critical Facility (STACY) operation in August 2024 after the renewal of the core to a light-water moderated heterogeneous critical assembly for the criticality experiments to clarify the criticality characteristics of the fuel debris. JAEA is currently proceeding the test operation along with pre-service inspections of the core loaded with debris structural material rods to study the nuclear characteristics of the fuel debris. In addition, for experiments simulating the properties of fuel debris, assuming the mixture of core internals and fuels, JAEA manufactures Stainless steel rods (debris structural material rods (iron)), Aluminum alloy rods which are filled with concrete pellets (debris structural material rods (concrete)), which are processed into the same shape as the fuel rods, Refillable fuel rods which have cylindrical shapes, made of zirconium alloy with a detachable end stopper, and Loading tubes which are made of aluminum alloy or zirconium alloy. In this presentation, we report on the fabrication of the experimental loadings such as debris structural material rods and the status of the pre-service inspections.

We conducted thermal power measurements and thermal power calibration for a performance test in the modified STACY. The activation method was adopted in the thermal power measurements. The core for the measurements consisted of 253 fuel rods and a sample driver. The gold foils used for the activation foil method were installed in the sample driver. The operation was carried out twice, at 20-W and 50-W. The neutron flux in the core and the response of the gold foil were calculated using MVP and PHITS, respectively, with JENDL-5 as the nuclear data. In each measurement, the integrated power was 4.2-Wh and 8.9-Wh, respectively. The indicated power with default setting was found to be about 50% higher than the evaluated value.
