Magnetic hysteresis induction with nanocolumnar defects in magnetic insulators

Magnetic property modification of an easy-plane magnetic insulator caused by an accumulation of nanocolumnar defects along the film normal was investigated by numerical simulations and heavy-ion beam irradiation experiments. Micromagnetic simulations suggest that depending on the density of the nonmagnetic nanocolumnar defects, the microstructure of the fragmented ferromagnetic domains is formed leading to magnetic coercivity enhancement as well as magnetization reduction. To prove this prediction, gold ions with 300 MeV were used for the irradiation to create amorphous nanocolumnar defects in crystalline bismuth-doped lutetium iron garnet (Bi:LuIG) films. As increasing the ion-irradiation dose, the modifications of the saturation magnetization and magnetic coercivity were observed in an uncorrelated manner; the enhancement of magnetic coercivity exhibits a fluence threshold whereas the decrease of saturation magnetization caused by ion-beam damage is monotonic with increasing beam fluence. These behaviors qualitatively agree with the numerical simulations and the models by continuum percolation theory. Because the irradiation effects are controlled by beam fluences, the present method has the potential to be a microstructuring technique for magnetic insulator.

Chirality memory stored in magnetic domain walls in the ferromagnetic state of MnP

Chirality in a helimagnetic structure is determined by the sense of magnetic moment rotation. We found that the chiral information did not disappear even after the phase transition to the high-temperature ferromagnetic phase in a helimagnet MnP. The 2nd harmonic resistivity $$rho^{2mathrm{f}}$$, which reflects the breaking down of mirror symmetry, was found to be almost unchanged after heating the sample above the ferromagnetic transition temperature and cooling it back to the helimagnetic state. The application of a magnetic field along the easy axis in the ferromagnetic state quenched the chirality-induced $$rho^{2mathrm{f}}$$. This indicates that the chirality memory effect originated from the ferromagnetic domain walls.

Electric current control of spin helicity in an itinerant helimagnet

A helimagnet is a chiral magnet in which the direction of the magnetic moment spatially rotates in a plane perpendicular to the propagation vector. The sense of the rotation known as spin helicity is a robust degree of freedom of matter and may provide a new concept of magnetic memory if it can be electrically controlled and detected. Here we show that the helicity can be controlled by magnetic fields and electric currents in an itinerant helimagnet MnP. Second-harmonic resistivity measurements allow us to read out the controlled helicity. In contract to an insulating multiferroic magnet, in which spin rotation was shown to be controllable by an electric field, we achieve helicity manipulation by using an electric current in the conducting helimagnet. The controllability of the spin helicity may pave the way to new method of realizing magnetic memories based on the spin internal degrees of freedom.

Magnetomechanical sensing based on delta-E effect in Y$$_3$$Fe$$_5$$O$$_{12}$$ micro bridge

We have investigated magnetic field effects on mechanical vibration of a magnetic microbridge made of ferrimagnetic insulator Y$$_3$$Fe$$_5$$O$$_{12}$$ at room temperature. The mechanical resonance frequency of the bridge exhibits a steep change at the saturation magnetic field of the microbridge. The steep change was shown to originate from magnetoelastic coupling combined with shape magnetic anisotropy. The competition between shape magnetic anisotropy and the external magnetic field can drive a delta-E effect, the modulation of Young modulus via the magnetoelastic coupling, in a narrow field range, which results in the observed steep change in the mechanical property.

In-situ monitoring of ion-beam luminescence of Si-O-C(-H) ceramics under proton-beam irradiation

Two kinds of Si-O-C(-H) ceramics particles having intrinsic photoluminescence (PL) spectra were prepared from silicone resin microspheres by heat treatment in a hydrogen atmosphere at 800 or 1100$$^{circ}$$C. The obtained particles were painted on a Si substrate using a binder, and ion-beam-luminescence spectra were observed under proton beam irradiation with an acceleration energy in the ranges of 1-3 MeV. Observed spectra had peaks at wavelength of 520-540 nm. These peak wavelengths were larger than those observed under UV light irradiation. The luminescence of H$$_{2}$$ 1100 (sample decarbonized at 1100$$^{circ}$$C) was bright, and that of H$$_{2}$$ 800 (sample decarbonized at 800$$^{circ}$$C) was faint. However, the intensity of luminescence decreased rapidly at an early stage of the beam irradiation. In air, a sharp luminescence band with a peak at 300 nm appeared together with the main emission with a peak in the range of 520-540 nm. The existence of the sharp band at 300 nm was apparent in the H$$_{2}$$ 800 spectra, whereas it appeared as a minor peak in the H$$_{2}$$ 1100 spectra in air.
