CuSb
O
, which is magnetically anisotropic at the atomic scale but curiously isotropic on mesoscopic length and time scales. We find that the frustration on the triangular lattice is imprinted in a nanostructured honeycomb lattice of Cu
ions that resists a coherent static Jahn-Teller distortion. The resulting two-dimensional random-bond spin-1/2 system on the honeycomb lattice has a broad spectrum of spin-dimer like excitations and low-energy spin degrees of freedom that retain.

We investigated the solubility of the crystals of a DNA hexamer d(CGCGCG) and their melting temperature, at which the thermal conversion occurs. The results obtained suggest that the conversion from a dsDNA to ssDNAs results in an increase in solubility. It was shown that using this temperature-controlled technique, high-grade single crystals of the DNA hexamer could be obtained from a small amount of DNA samples. This easy-to-apply technique would be superior to the conventional vapor diffusion technique in that it allows the solubility of DNA crystals to be controlled with no need for expensive setups.

To elucidate effects of mutations in this region on the regulatory function of Tn, we measured Ca
-dependent ATPase activity of myofibrils containing various mutants of TnT at these residues. The results confirmed that the mutant E244D increases the maximum ATPase activity without changing the Ca
sensitivity. The mutant K247R was shown for the first time to have the effect similar to the mutant E244D. Furthermore, various TnT mutants (E244D, E244M, E244A, E244K, K247R, K247E, and K247A) showed various effects on the maximum ATPase activity while the Ca
sensitivity was unchanged. Molecular dynamics simulations of the Tn-core containing these TnT mutants suggested that the hydrogen-bond network formed by the side chains of neighboring residues around residues 244 and 247 is important for Tn to function properly.

Nuclear reactions involving
Li are thought to be key reactions to synthesize heavier elements in the early universe and supernovae because of filling a gap of mass number=8. Direct cross-section measurement of
Li(d,x), (x = t,p,
) reactions was performed in the energy region of astrophysical interest, covering the Gamow peaks of T
=1-3. The
Li beam at 7 different energies from E
=0.3 to 1.2 MeV was provided by Tokai Radioactive Ion Accelerator Complex (TRIAC). The experiment was carried out using a CD
target and large-area position sensitive silicon detectors. This measurement provides the first data of cross sections in the low-energy region below E
=1.5 MeV. The analysis of the
Li(d,t)
Li reaction measurement has been completed. An enhancement on the excitation function was observed at around E
= 0.8 MeV and its energy corresponds to the excitation energy of E
=22.4 MeV in
Be, where an excited state was previously reported. The new astrophysical nuclear reaction rate will be presented and the contribution to the r-process nucleosynthesis will be discussed. Also, the preliminary result of the
Li(d,p)
Li reaction will be presented.

Proceedings of 12th International Congress on Neutron Capture Therapy (ICNCT-12), p.397 - 400, 2006/10
An ultraminiature thermal neutron monitor which was named SOF detector (Scintillator with Optical Fiber detector) had been developed for BNCT treatment. We had been experienced 15 clinical trials using SOF detector until the end of 2005, some measurements got good results, and some got unacceptable results. One reason of the unacceptable results was due to dislocation of the detector during treatment. This is because it is difficult to fix the SOF detector on patient's skin without strong sticker. To overcome this problem, a loop-type SOF probe was developed. By using the loop-type SOF detector, fixing on the patient's skin was much easier.

Be scattering angular distributions, as well as their relative reaction cross-sections, resulted to be rather similar. This may suggest that at Coulomb barrier energies the halo structure and the small weakly binding energy of the
Be projectile have no big influence on the reaction dynamics.

Authors developed a radiotracer method for diffusion studies in solids. The experimental test was performed by the measurement of the diffusion coefficients of Li in a sample of the compound
LiAl using an
-emitting radiotracer of
Li(T
= 0.84 s). It was found that the time-dependent yields of the alpha particles from the diffusing 8Li that was initially implanted in the sample could be used as a measure of the diffusivity of the tracer in a nondestructive way. The method was applied to measure the self-diffusion coefficients of Li in
LiGa, and for investigating how the Li diffusion in the Li ionic conductors is affected by the concentration of atomic defects.
