A single peak in thermal desorption profiles of hydrogen, which are measured in low-temperature thermal desorption spectrometry (L-TDS) for a very thin plate specimen of tempered martensitic steel, was reproduced successfully by the superposition of two Gaussian distributions. Then, the parameters concerning the detrapping rate constants for both peaks, which are trap energy and pre-exponential factor, were calculated using the Choo-Lee plot. We confirmed that Kissinger model incorporating the obtained parameters could simulate the two peaks. In addition, we reproduced the single peak well using the reaction-diffusion equation incorporating the obtained parameters and the appropriate trap site concentration. From the results, we interpreted that the one peak corresponds to dislocation and the other to grain-boundary.

ECP is the exclusive index to evaluate corrosion condition directly at the points of interest in the mixing of neutron and -ray environment. ECP can be calculated through the combination of water radiolysis and ECP model. A water radiolysis model have been applied to experiments performed in in-pile loops in the experimental reactors and applicability was confirmed. An ECP model based on the Butler-Volmer equation was also prepared. ECP of stainless steel was measured under well controlled water chemistry condition in in-pile loop in the Halden reactor, and the model was applied to evaluate ECP measured in the Halden reactor. The measured data were well explained by the water radiolysis calculation and ECP model. Accumulation of in-pile ECP data are expected for further validation of the models.

The authors proposed and ECP evaluation model introducing irradiation-induced diffusion in the oxide layer to simulate neutron irradiation effect, and predicted with this model that ECP is started to depress from the neutron flux of about ten to the fourteenth per square meter. As the JMTR has in-pile loops applicable to water chemistry experiments, degree of irradiation effect on ECP appears in the in-pile loop was estimated by the model. Under oxygen injected condition, ECP in a capsule becomes constant along the vertical direction due to the presence of high amount of oxygen and hydrogen peroxide in a capsule. However, if neutron irradiation depress ECP, ECP in a capsule along vertical direction wouldn't become constant, and the degree to the decrement is detectable by experiments.

ITER TFC structures are large welding structures made of heavy thick stainless steels. JAEA plans to apply narrow gap TIG welding with FMYJJ1 which is full austenitic stainless filler material to manufacture TFC structure. FMYJJ1 is specified in "Codes for Fusion Facilities -Rules on Superconducting Magnet Structure (2008)". In order to evaluate effect of base material combinations and thickness of welded joint on tensile properties at 4 K, tensile tests were conducted at 4 K by using tensile specimens taken from 40 mm thickness weld joints of four combinations and 200 mm thickness ones of two combinations of base materials. These weld joints were manufactured by one side narrow gap TIG welding with FMYJJ1. As the results, it was confirmed that yield and tensile strengths of welded joint at 4K were decreased with decreasing of nitrogen of base material, and there were no large distribution of strengths at 4 K along the thickness of welded joints of 200 mm thickness.

In-pile loop experiments are one of the key technologies which can provide an understanding of corrosion behaviors of structural materials in nuclear power plants (NPPs). The experiments should be supported not only by reliable measurement tools to confirm corrosive conditions under neutron and ray irradiations but also by theoretical models for extrapolating the measured data to predict corrosion behaviors in NPPs. The relationships among electrochemical corrosion potential (ECP), metal surface conditions, exposure time and other environmental conditions have been determined from in situ measurements of corrosion behaviors of stainless steel specimens exposed to HO and O in high temperature water. Based on the relationships, a model to evaluate ECP of stainless steel was developed by coupling an electrochemical model and a double oxide layer model. Major conclusions obtained from the evaluation model are as follows. (1) The difference in ECP behaviors of the specimens exposed to HO and O were mainly from the thickness and developing rate of the inner oxide layers. (2) Calculated ECP behaviors, e.g., the different responses to HO and O and hysteresis and memory effects, agreed with the measured ones. (3) Neutron exposure might decrease ECP due to radiation-induced diffusion in the oxide layer. The ECP evaluation model will be applied to evaluation of corrosive conditions in the JMTR in-pile loop.

The ITER organization and 6 Domestic Agencies (DA) have been implementing the construction of ITER superconducting magnet systems. Four DAs have already started full scale construction of Toroidal Field (TF) coil conductors. The qualification of the radial plate manufacture has been completed, and JA and EU are ready for full scale construction. JA has qualified full manufacturing processes of the winding pack with a 1/3 prototype and made 2 full scale mock-ups of the basic segments of TF coil structure to optimize and industrialize the manufacturing process. Preparation and qualification of the full scale construction of the TF coil winding is underway by EU. Procurement of the manufacturing equipment is near completion and qualification of manufacturing processes has already started. The constructions of other components of the ITER magnet systems are also going well towards the main goal of the first plasma in 2020.

A prediction method for tensile strengths at liquid helium temperature (4K) has been developed in order to rationalize qualification tests of cryogenic structural materials used in large superconducting magnet for a fusion device. This method is to use quadratic curves which are expressed as a function of carbon and nitrogen contents and strengths at room temperature. This study shows results of tensile tests at 4K and confirmation of accuracy of prediction method for tensile strengths at 4K for large forgings and thick hot rolled plates of austenitic stainless steels, which can be used in the actual coil case and radial plates of the ITER toroidal field coils. These products are 316LN having high nitrogen from 0.09 to 0.24% and maximum thickness is 600mm. As the results, it was confirmed that the tensile strengths of these products at 4K can be predicted by using appropriate quadratic curves. And distribution of strengths for each product was estimated.

Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) has responsibility to procure 19 structures for ITER toroidal field (TF) coils as in-kind components. JAEA plans to use materials specified in the material section of "Codes for Fusion Facilities; Rules on Superconducting Magnet Structure (2008)" issued by the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers (JSME) in 2008. Large forged products were produced and their mechanical properties at 4K were evaluated. In addition, the following activities have been performed; (1) to optimize the design of each weld type identified in the manufacturing sequence, (2) to qualify typical welding procedure including repair, (3) to establish welding techniques other than narrow gap TIG welding with FMYJJ1, (4) to demonstrate the manufacturing procedures through manufacture of 1-m mockups and full-scale segments of TFC structure. This paper describes the results of material qualification and industrialization activities of manufacturing processes of ITER TFC structure.

JAEA started sub- and full-scale trials to qualify and optimize manufacturing procedure of ITER TF coil from March, 2009. As major outcome of these trials, automatic winding system with accuracy in conductor length measurement of 0.01% has been established and the elongation of the conductor length due to heat treatment was measured to be 0.06%. To confirm validity of these outcomes, the authors carried out winding of a one-third scale dummy double pancake (DP), followed by its insulation and impregnation trial, and, in addition, heat treatment of one-third scale DP with real a TF conductor. The details about these trials are described in the other paper. The authors also performed trial manufacture of full scale RP and CPs for dummy double pancake, which will be made in near future. The full scale RP is manufactured by machining 10 segments in parallel to shorten machining duration and joining each segment by welding. In our trial manufacture of the full scale RP, hot-rolled SS316LN plates are machined to a final dimension, namely without additional material, and these segments are laser-welded. From these trials, manufacturing procedure of a thick hot-roll SS316LN plate is qualified and machining procedure is established, while more optimization may be necessary to achieve the required schedule and cost.

Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) has conducted qualification and rationalization activities in Japan in order to rationalize manufacturing procedure of ITER Toroidal Field (TF) coil structures. The activities included qualification of structural materials and qualification of welding procedure according to Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers (JSME) code constituted for fusion devices, demonstration of the manufacturing method and procedures through full-scale segments of TF coil structure. From results of these activities, JAEA confirmed applicability of JSME code to actual series TF coil structures as quality control method hence the quality of structural materials and weld joints of Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) were satisfied ITER requirement. In addition, JAEA obtained knowledge of welding deformation of actual TF coil structures. This paper describes results of these qualification and development activities for TF coil structure.

Based on the results of the sub- and full-scale trials, the TF coil and TF coil structure manufacturing procedures were considered. Radial plate (RP) will be manufactured by assembling 10 sets of segments with Laser Beam Welding. Cover plates (CPs) will be manufactured by 3 different methods, depending on their geometry. For Winding pack (WP), winding system to enable to measurement of the conductor length with the accuracy of 0.01% for serial production was designed. Assembling procedure and groove types of narrow gap TIG welding for coil structures were determined. Hereafter, technical improvements will be considered in order to aim for further optimization of manufacturing.

JAEA started the study on welding trials for heavy thickness materials since 2008 and is planning of full scale mock-up model fabrication for main sub-components (1 set of inboard side and 1set of outboard side) in 2010 in order to investigate the technical issues for manufacturing of TF coil structures. This paper introduces the results on welding trials and status of full scale mock-up model fabrication to confirm the validity of welding technology and manufacturing design before fabricating actual products.

TF coil structures, which support large electromagnetic force generated in TF coils under the cryogenic temperature (about 4K), are the mega welding structures composed of coil case and support structures made of high strength and high toughness stainless steel. JAEA started the study on welding trials for heavy thickness materials since 2008 and is demonstrating of full scale mock-up model fabrication for main sub-components in 2010 in order to investigate the technical issues for manufacturing of TF coil structures. This paper introduces the results on welding trials and status of full scale mock-up model fabrication to confirm the validity of welding technology and manufacturing design before fabricating actual products. Enough weld joint performance was obtained with the base metal of JJ1 (high strength and high toughness stainless steel developed in Japan) and SS316LN, and also their combination using JJ1 filler wire (developed in Japan) by narrow gap GTAW process. Welding deformation such as angular distortion between outer plate and side plate of U-shape segment could be controlled and minimized by using effective restraint jig and no defects was observed in the welds by radiographic testing (RT) in trial manufacturing of 1m length. Validity of welding technology and manufacturing design such as fabrication sequence, welding procedure specification (WPS), quality control plan is confirmed during full scale mock-up model fabrication.

This paper describes the latest design of liquid lithium target system in IFMIF. Design requirement of the Li target is to provide a stable Li jet with a speed of 20 m/s to handle an averaged heat flux of 1 GW/m. A double reducer nozzle and a concaved flow are applied to the target design. On Li purification, a cold trap and two kinds of hot trap are applied to control impurities below permissible levels. Nitrogen concentration shall be controlled below 10 wppm by one of the hot trap. Tritium concentration shall be controlled below 1 wppm by an yttrium hot trap. To maintain reliable continuous operation, various diagnostics are attached to the target assembly. Among the target assembly, a back-plate made of RAFM is located in the most severe region of neutron irradiation (50 dpa/y). Therefore, two design options of replaceable back wall and their remote handling systems are under investigation.

In order to investigate interrelation between the lattice structure and the magnetic structure, we have performed Rietveld structural analysis on the neutron powder patterns for TbCaMnO at low temperature. In the concentration range of , we observed the Bragg reflections due to the CE-like- and C-type structures. In this range, the powder patterns were reproduce by the two-phase model with and symmetries. The fractions of these phases change against concentration . This variation of the fraction for the phase is similar to the variation of the integrated intensities of the CE-like-type magnetic Bragg reflections. This indicates that the phase is responsible for the CE-like spin-ordering. Furthermore, we discussed interrelation between the detailed lattice structure and magnetic structure.

The ITER vacuum vessel (VV) R&D has progressed with the international collaborative efforts by the Japan, Russia and US Parties during the Engineering Design Activities (EDA). Fabrication and testing of a full-scale VV sector model and a port extension have yielded critical information on the fabrication and assembly technologies of the vacuum vessel, magnitude of welding distortions, dimensional accuracy and achievable tolerances during sector fabrication and field assembly. In particular, the dimensional tolerances of 3 mm for VV sector fabrication and 10 mm for VV sector field assembly have been achieved and satisfied the requirements of 5 mm and 20 mm, respectively. Also, the basic feasibility of the remote welding robot has been demonstrated. This report presents detailed fabrication and assembly technologies such as welding technology applicable to the thick wall without large distortion, field joint welding technology between sectors and remote welding technology through the VV R&D project.
