Near-infrared study of radiation damage in ion-irradiated cerium dioxide and cerium-gadolinium dioxide

Costantini, J.-M.*; Guillaumet, M.*; Lelong, G.*; Ishikawa, Norito; Seo, P.*; Yasuda, Kazuhiro*

Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research B, 558, p.165567_1 - 165567_6, 2025/01

Radiation damage is studied in ion-irradiated sintered CeO$$_{2}$$ and (Ce, Gd)O$$_{2-x}$$ samples. Near Infra-red (NIR) spectra measurements were carried out by using the diffuse reflectivity mode for all of these sintered samples. Samples were irradiated with 100-MeV Kr, 200-MeV Xe, and 36-MeV W ions. Four broad absorption bands centered at 3700, 4100, 6000, and 7600 cm$$^{-1}$$ (i.e. 0.46, 0.51, 0.74, and 0.94 eV) are deduced from fits of the FTIR spectra for the ion-irradiated CeO$$_{2}$$ and (Ce, Gd)O$$_{2-x}$$ samples accompanied by a change in color from ivory to green. No such bands are recorded for the virgin (Ce, Gd)O$$_{2-x}$$ samples with 5, 10, and 15 mol Gd$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$ with an increasing amount of oxygen vacancies. Absorption bands are tentatively assigned to electronic transitions involving cerium vacancy levels in the band gap, which has been also observed under high-energy electron irradiation.

Coulomb spike model of radiation damage in wide band-gap insulators

Costantini, J.-M.*; Ogawa, Tatsuhiko

Quantum Beam Science (Internet), 8(3), p.20_1 - 20_16, 2024/08

A novel Coulomb spike concept is applied to the radiation damage induced in LiF and SiO$$_{2}$$ with about the same mass density ($$sim$$2.65 g cm$$^{-3}$$) by $$_{28}^{60}$$Ni and $$_{36}^{84}$$Kr ions of 1.0-MeV/u energy for about the same electronic energy loss (10 MeV/um). The distribution of ionizations and electrostatic energy gained in the electric field by the ionized atoms is computed with the PHITS code for both targets. Further, the atomic collision cascades induced by these low energy hot ions of about 500 eV are simulated with the SRIM2013 code. It is found that melting is reached in a small volume for SiO$$_{2}$$ due to the energy deposition in the subthreshold events of nuclear collisions induced by the Si and O ions. For LiF, the phonon contribution to the stopping power of the lighter Li and F ions is not sufficient to induce melting, even though the melting temperature is lower than for SiO$$_{2}$$. The formation of amorphous domains in SiO$$_{2}$$ is likely after fast quenching of the small molten pockets, whereas only point defects may be formed in LiF.

A Model for the structure of the ${it Escherichia coli}$ SOS-regulated UmuD$$_{2}$$ protein

UmuD$$_{2}$$ protein is a regulatory subunit of ${it Escherichia coli}$ DNA polymerase V. This protein forms a complex with UmuC protein, a catalytic subunit of DNA polymerase V, and plays a important role in error-prone translesion DNA synthesis, which serves as the mechanistic basis for most DNA-damaging agent and UV light mutagenesis. In this paper, based on the results of a combination of experimental studies, we have developed a refined model for the structure of the UmuD$$_{2}$$ homodimer. Implications of the structural change of UmuD$$_{2}$$ protein with respect to its roles in managing the action of DNA polymease V are discussed.
