We have evaluated double-differential cross-sections (DDX) of the $$^9$$Be(p,xn) reaction based on the function proposed by Wakabayashi et al. up to 12 MeV. Through compilation in the ENDF-6 format file, data processing, and neutronics analysis with MC simulation codes MCNP and PHITS to thick target yield (TTY) measurements, the function was re-confirmed to give more reasonable DDX data than those in our previous library JENDL-4.0/HE and ENDF/B-VIII.0. We finally decided to reduce the absolute cross-sections by 15% for our new nuclear data library JENDL-5 since the prediction ability of neutronics simulation was much better than that based on the original function. Through comprehensive comparisons of the simulation results on TTY at different proton energies and neutron emission angles, we conclude that JENDL-5 gives the best estimation in the world.

To specify preferential occupation sites of Co substituents and to clarify charge and spin states of Co ions in (La, Co)-cosubstituted hexagonal magnetoplumbite-type (M-type) Sr ferrite, $$^{57}$$Fe and $$^{59}$$Co nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra are measured under zero and external magnetic fields using powdered and single crystalline specimens. To a considerable degree, the charge compensation between La$$^{3+}$$ and Co$$^{2+}$$ works in the equal (La, Co)-codoped case, where more than half of the Co ions are considered to be present in the minority spin $$4f_1$$ sites at the center of the oxygen tetrahedra, with the $$S$$ = 3/2 state carrying a small orbital moment owing to spin-orbit interaction. The remaining small number of high-spin Co$$^{2+}$$ ($$S$$ = 3/2, $$L$$ = 1) ions with unquenched orbital moments would be distributed to the other octahedral $$12k$$, $$2a$$, and $$4f_2$$ sites.

We took $$^{31}$$P NMR measurements of mainly paramagnetic phase $${rm Sr}_{1-x}{rm Ca}_x{rm Co}_2{rm P}_2$$ to reveal the itinerant-electron metamagnetic transition, and of its magnetically ordered phase, and characterized their spin fluctuations by estimating the spin fluctuation parameter $$T_{0}$$ corresponding to the width of the spin fluctuation in the spectrum in frequency space. As $$x$$ increases from 0 to 0.5, the in-plane component of $$T_{0}$$ decreases proportionally with the metamagnetic transition field. In the antiferromagnetic cT phase, $$T_{0}$$ is constant and spin fluctuations show an isotropic character in contrast to their behavior in the paramagnetic ucT phase. These results indicate that the in-plane spin fluctuations due to the quasi-two-dimensional crystal structure play a significant role in the metamagnetic transition of this system.

We are working on the development of a non-destructive assay (NDA) measurement system using the Fast Neutron Direct Interrogation (FNDI) method. The FNDI method is a kind of active neutron technique and can measure the total amounts of fissile materials (U-235, Pu-239, Pu-241). We have already carried out design analyses of an NDA measurement system for measuring the debris assuming use of the Three Mile Island (TMI) canister model. The result was presented at the Institute of Nuclear Materials Management (INMM) 56th Annual Meeting. Since then, we have modified the design of the NDA measurement system for the fuel debris and canister models at 1F. In this paper, we provide the calculation and evaluation results using the modified NDA measurement system. Moreover, we provide analytical investigations of the influence of fuel debris including high fissile material content on measurements.

Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Disaster in March 11th in 2011 is considered to produce fuel debris. It is difficult to measure nondestructively the amount of fissile materials in the fuel debris since the constituents of the debris are unknown and it may contain various materials such as water, metal, and even neutron absorber. A fast neutron direct interrogation (FNDI) method, which has been developed for long years to measure uranium bearing wastes drums, can measure an amount of nuclear materials regardless of a matrix of the wastes drums. We have studied nondestructive assay for nuclear materials in fuel debris by using the FNDI method. In this paper, we report on a design study of a nondestructive measurement system for debris canister and results of the investigation on the applicability of the FNDI method to the fuel debris containing various materials using Monte Carlo simulations.

In Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), it has been started that investigation on applicability of Fast Neutron Direct Interrogation (FNDI) method to fuel debris. FNDI method is expected to be promising non-destructive Assay (NDA) technique which measures total amounts of fissile materials. In this presentation, we report on basic model of non-destructive measurement system designed by using Monte Carlo Code PHITS, the effect of the matrix in debris canister on FNDI method evaluated by using Monte Carlo Code MVP and four dimensional (4 D) visualization results of neutron flux obtained by using visualization tool we have newly developed.

Spin-orbit fluctuations in frustrated heavy-fermion metal LiV$$_{2}$$O$$_{4}$$

Spin fluctuations were studied over a wide momentum ($$hbar$$$$Q$$) and energy ($$E$$) space in the frustrated ${it d}$-electron heavy-fermion metal LiV$$_{2}$$O$$_{4}$$ by time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering. We observed the overall ${it Q-E}$ evolutions near the characteristic ${it Q}$ = 0.6 $AA $^{-1}$$ peak and found another weak broad magnetic peak around 2.4 $AA $^{-1}$$. The data are described by a simple response function, a partially delocalized magnetic form factor, and antiferromagnetic short-range spatial correlations, indicating that heavy-fermion formation is attributable to spin-orbit fluctuations with orbital hybridization.

The normal state properties of a noncentrosymmetric superconductor Mo$$_3$$Al$$_2$$C are studied by means of the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiment. The change of NMR line shape and the peak of the nuclear spin-echo decay rate at $$simeq$$ 130 K indicate that the Mo$$_3$$Al$$_2$$C exhibits the phase transition prior to the emergence of superconductivity. The reduction in the conduction electron density is inferred from the decrease in the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate. The nature of the newly found phase transition is discussed by considering the result of the first principle calculations, indicating a good nesting property of the Fermi surfaces.

The results of $$^{27}$$Al nuclear magnetic resonance and specific-heat measurements of the noncentrosymmetric superconductor Mo$$_3$$Al$$_2$$C are reported. The phase transition around 130 K is inferred from a distinct change in the NMR spectrum, a clear peak in the spin-echo decay rate, and an anomaly in the specific heat. Possibility of charge-density wave ordering around 130 K is discussed by calculating the Fermi surfaces in the normal states and considering the partial quenching of the Fermi surfaces with the decrease in 1/$$T$$$$_1$$ below the superconducting transition temperature.
