The balance between oxidative stress and antioxidant activity, which is a defense mechanism against oxidative stress, was investigated in the liver and bladder of wild Japanese macaques captured in Fukushima Prefecture. No significant induction of oxidative stress by exposure to environmental radionuclides after the Fukushima nuclear accident was observed, suggesting that the stress defense mechanism of the organism is activated in some organs.

Using the dose response curve, external exposure dose for seven wild Japanese macaques captured in Fukushima prefecture were examined. The results suggest that the external exposure dose for the wild Japanese macaques were ranged between 45 mGy to 300 mGy.

The present report discusses the effect of dose rate reduction by soil decontamination in order to make a remediation strategy for contaminated environment by radionuclides discharged by the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. The relation between area of soil decontamination and dose rate reduction for lands considered to be typical residences, public facilities and schools has been analyzed using the particle and heavy ion transport code PHITS, and an analytical model to assess the dose reduction rate with a simple equation was also suggested from the calculation results of PHITS. In the case of DF (Decontamination Factor) = 10 and decontamination radius = 100 m for the soil uniformly contaminated by Cs-137, the dose rate at the center of decontamination area is decreased by a factor of about five compared with the dose rate before decontamination.

The He based neutron polarizer is useful in experiments such as polarized neutron scattering experiments in a wide q-range, etc., since it is effective for neutrons in a wide energy range. To introduce the in-situ SEOP polarized
He neutron spin filter into the instruments of the pulsed neutron facility such as J-PARC/MLF, it is important to make the system compact and stable, because the system is located inside thick and bulky radiation shields for high energy
ray and neutrons. In this study, we have developed a compact laser optics with a volume holographic grating element, and composed an in-situ SEOP
He neutron spin filter. We have started to apply the
He spin filer as an analyzer to polarized neutron small angle scattering and reflection measurements. In this paper, we report the design of our SEOP
He neutron spin filter system and some results of the related polarized neutron beam experiments.

We have been developing a He neutron spin filter (NSF) for the efficient utilization of pulsed neutrons, since it can polarize neutrons effectively in a wide energy range. The
He NSF is effective even for neutrons with energy higher than several-tens-meV, so that it will be useful for the study of high-energy magnetic excitation. Since the
He NSF can also cover a large solid angle and polarize neutrons without deflecting them from their original course, it is suitable for the analyzer for SANS instruments and reflectometers. In addition, the
He NSF will be a key device in the application of recently developed magnetic field imaging technique by using polarized pulsed neutrons. In order to apply the
He NSF to such experiments at a pulsed neutron experimental facility such as the J-PARC, we have developed compact laser optics with a volume holographic grating (VHG) element for a spin-exchange optical pumping (SEOP) system, and composed an in-situ SEOP
He NSF. Current status in the development and application of the in-situ SEOP
He NSF at J-PARC will be presented, and perspectives will be discussed.

In order to investigate the influence on the oxidative stress status by the long-term exposure after the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear power plant (FNPP) accident, we analyzed oxidative stress markers in liver and bladder of wild Japanese macaques in the ex-evacuation zone. In liver, the concentration of malondialdehyde (MDA) in approximately 70% of the exposed group exceeded the average and SOD activity of the exposed group shifted toward lower within the range indicated in the control group. By contrast, alteration of MDA concentration and SOD activity in bladder was opposite to that shown in liver. We also found that oxidative stress markers changed in the same manner by external and internal exposure. Our data suggested that exposure to low dose/low dose-rate radiation following the FNPP accident may affect the sensitivity to oxidative stress by changing the activity of antioxidant enzymes.

Polarized neutron scattering is a powerful technique in order to clarify the magnetic structure of materials. The technique is often used in JRR-3 nowadays. However, the available energy has been limited below 100 meV as long as we use the conventional polarizing method. To realize polarized neutron scattering experiments above the energy, the use of He spin filters is the best solution. In addition, in the new pulsed neutron facility, J-PARC, the neutron source has wide energy spectrum. To polarize all the neutrons, it is desired to use the
He spin filters. Taking these backgrounds into account, we are now planning to introduce
He neutron spin filters to polarized neutron experiments at JRR-3 and J-PARC. In our oral presentation, we report the detailed plan of the experiments and the present status of the preparation.
