Assessing and tackling the barocaloric fatigue for applicable solid-state refrigeration

The cycling fatigue and barocaloric response of NH$$_4$$I is directly assessed under loading-unloading cycles with stress up to 100,MPa, with the adiabatic temperature change ($$Delta T_{mathrm{ad}}$$) decaying from 15,K to approximately 0.8,K after 100 cycles. $emph{In situ}$ X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and neutron diffraction concertedly reveal the existence of the residual high-pressure phase even after the first unloading, whose fraction is rapidly increased to 90% at the 100th cycle. A phenomenological model is developed to elucidate this fatigue behavior, and an excellent agreement with experimental data has been achieved. To relieve the intergranular stress and enhance the mobility of grains, we encapsulate the composite of NH$$_4$$I particles and silicone oil into a 3D-printed polymer shell. Such an architectural tailoring has markedly improved the cyclic stability of the barocaloric effect with $$Delta T_{mathrm{ad}}$$ rising to c.a. 4.6,K after 100 cycles. Our results establish a fundamental understanding of the barocaloric fatigue behavior and pave a feasible route to applicable barocaloric cooling technology.

Caloric effects usually occur in the vicinity of solid-state phase transitions with a limited refrigeration temperature span. Here, we introduce and realize an unprecedented concept -all temperature barocaloric effect, i.e., a remarkable barocaloric effect in KPF$$_6$$ across an exceptionally wide temperature span, from 77.5 to 300 K and potentially down to 4 K, covering typical room temperature, liquid nitrogen, liquid hydrogen, and liquid helium refrigeration regions. The directly measured barocaloric adiabatic temperature change reaches 12 K at room temperature and 2.5 K at 77.5 K upon the release of a 250 MPa pressure. This effect is attributed to a persistent phase transition to a rhombohedral high pressure phases. We depict the thermodynamic energy landscape to account for the structural instability. This unique all-temperature barocaloric effect presents a novel approach to highly applicable solid-state refrigeration technology, transcending the conventional multi-stage scenario.

The structures of the neutron-rich $$^{69,71,73}$$Co isotopes were investigated via ($$p,2p$$) knockout reactions at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory, RIKEN. Level schemes were reconstructed using the $$gamma-gamma$$ coincidence technique, with tentative spin-parity assignments based on the measured inclusive and exclusive cross sections. Comparison with shell-model calculations suggests coexistence of spherical and deformed shapes at low excitation energies in the $$^{69,71,73}$$Co isotopes.

The nuclear structure of the $$^{76}$$Ni nucleus was investigated by ($$p$$,$$2p$$) reaction using a NaI(Tl) array to detect the deexciting prompt $$gamma$$ rays. A new transition with an energy of 2227 keV was identified by $$gamma gamma$$ and $$gamma gamma gamma$$ coincidences. Our shell-model calculations using the Lenzi, Nowacki, Poves, and Sieja interaction produced good candidates for the experimental proton hole states in the observed energy region, and the theoretical cross sections showed good agreement with the experimental values. Although we could not assign all the experimental states to the theoretical ones unambiguously, the results are consistent with a reasonably large Z = 28 shell gap for nickel isotopes in accordance with previous studies.

Migration experiments of $$^{237}$$Np(V) and $$^{241}$$Am(III) have been performed using a column system, to investigate migration behavior of Np and Am through a column packed with loess, taken from Shanxi, China. Adsorption mechanisms of Np and Am on the loess were examined by a chemical extraction method. In the case of the Np, most of Np adsorbed on the influent edge of the column. The Np adsorbed on the loess was mainly controlled by surface complexation. However, the migration of Np in the loess media could be roughly evaluated by using the distribution coefficient. In the case of the Am, particulate Am species was formed in the influent solution and moved in the column. The Am adsorbed on the loess was controlled by irreversible reactions. The migration behavior of particulate Am in the loess media could be expressed by the filtration theory.
