Ordered graphane nanoribbons synthesized via high-pressure diels-alder polymerization of 2,2'-bipyrazine

We synthesized a crystalline graphane nanoribbon (GANR) via pressure-induced polymerization of 2,2'-bipyrazine (BPZ). By performing Rietveld refinement of in situ neutron diffraction data, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, infrared spectra, and theoretical calculation, we found that BPZ experienced Diels-Alder polymerization between the $$pi$$ $$cdots$$ $$pi$$ stacked aromatic rings, and formed extended boat-GANR structures with exceptional long-range order. The unreacted -C=N- groups bridge the two ends of the boat, and ready for further functionalization. The GANR has a bandgap of 2.25 eV, with booming photoelectric response ($$I_{rm on}$$/$$I_{rm off}$$ =18.8). Our work highlights that the high-pressure topochemical polymerization is a promising method for the precise synthesis of graphane with specific structure and desired properties.

Brightening triplet excitons enable high-performance white-light emission in organic small molecules via integrating n-$$pi^*/pi$$-$$pi^*$$ transitions

Luminescent materials that simultaneously embody bright singlet and triplet excitons hold great potential in optoelectronics, signage, and information encryption. However, achieving high-performance white-light emission is severely hampered by their inherent unbalanced contribution of fluorescence and phosphorescence. Herein, we address this challenge by pressure treatment engineering via hydrogen bonding cooperativity effect to realize the mixture of n-$$pi^*/pi$$-$$pi^*$$ transitions, where the triplet state emission was boosted from 7% to 40% in isophthalic acid (IPA). A superior white-light emission based on hybrid fluorescence and phosphorescence was harvested in pressure-treated IPA, and the photoluminescence quantum yield was increased to 75% from the initial 19% (blue-light emission). In-situ high-pressure IR spectra, X ray diffraction, and neutron diffraction reveal continuous strengthening of the hydrogen bonds with the increase of pressure. Furthermore, this enhanced hydrogen bond is retained down to the ambient conditions after pressure treatment, awarding the targeted IPA efficient intersystem crossing for balanced singlet/triplet excitons population and resulting in efficient white-light emission. This work not only proposes a route for brightening triplet states in organic small molecule, but also regulates the ratio of singlet and triplet excitons to construct high-performance white-light emission.

The layered van der Waals halides are particularly sensitive to external pressure, suggesting a feasible route to pinpoint their structure with extraordinary behavior. However, a very sensitive pressure response usually lead to a detrimental phase transition and/or lattice distortion, making the approach of materials manipulation in a continuous manner remain challenging. Here, the extremely weak interlayer coupling and high tunability of layered RhI$$_3$$ crystals are observed. A pressure-driven phase transition occurs at a moderate pressure of 5 GPa, interlinking to a change of layer stack mode. Strikingly, such a phase transition does not affect the tendency of quasi-linear bandgap narrowing, and a metallization with an ultra-broad tunability of 1.3 eV redshift is observed at higher pressures. Moreover, the carrier concentration increases by 4 orders of magnitude at 30 GPa, and the photocurrent enhances by 5 orders of magnitude at 7.8 GPa. These findings create new opportunities for exploring, tuning, and understanding the van der Waals halides by harnessing their unusual feature of a layered structure, which is promising for future devices based on materials-by-design that are atomically thin.

The digital feedback (DFB) setup employed in a low-level radio frequency (LLRF) control system is crucial to ensure RF field stability in accelerating cavities. To this end, a novel in-house and multi-purpose prototype DFB setup was developed for multiple applications at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC). Being efficient, low-cost, and compact is key to achieving a cost-effective system that fulfills the performance specifications. A field-programmable gate array (FPGA)-based design with a digital signal processing (DSP) function is used. This arrangement compensates for RF phase fluctuations and amplitude modulations by employing a proportional and integral (PI) feedback controller. The system was utilized to conduct high-power tests on the interdigital H-mode drift-tube linac (IH-DTL) cavity of a muonlinac for short RF pulses. The setup was also tested on a buncher cavity (Buncher-2) in the J-PARC linac, achieving efficient performance for longer RF pulses. The stability of the RF accelerating field in the IH-DTL was achieved at $$pm$$0.25% peak-to-peak (pp) in amplitude and $$pm$$0.36 degree pp in phase. For the Buncher-2, the amplitude stability of $$pm$$0.18% pp and phase stability of $$pm$$0.13 degree pp were obtained. This study discusses the design aspects of a cost-effective DFB system and reports high-power measurements.

Analysis of voltage droop on J-PARC klystron high voltage power supply

In the J-PARC linac, High Voltage DC power supplies (HVDC) to drive klystrons. These HVDCs are modulating-anode power supplies with a rated voltage of 110 kV and are operated by connecting up to four klystrons to a single HVDC. Since multiple klystrons are driven by a single HVDC, a voltage droop in the capacitor bank of the HVDC occurs in the beam pulse. This effect causes a decrease in the output power of the klystron. Half of the existing HVDC in J-PARC were installed at the J-PARC construction, and the other half were installed at the LINAC 400 MeV upgrade, and the capacitors show signs of age-related degradation. In the near future, the capacitors will be necessary to be replaced partially or completely. On the replacement of the capacitors, it will be necessary to re-evaluate the operating behavior of the HVDC when the capacitor bank configuration is changed. In this presentation, we evaluated the effect of the voltage droop on the klystron with the present configuration and the effect of changing the capacitor bank configuration with numerical and experimental results, and we discussed the countermeasure for the stable beam operation.

Upgrade of the 3-MeV linac for testing of accelerator components at J-PARC

We have upgraded a 3-MeV linac at J-PARC. The ion source is same as the J-PARC linac's, and the old 30-mA RFQ is replaced by a spare 50-mA RFQ, therefore, the beam energy is 3 MeV and the nominal beam current is 50 mA. The main purpose of this system is to test the spare RFQ, but also used for testing of various components required in order to keep the stable operation of the J-PARC accelerator. The accelerator has been already commissioned, and measurement programs have been started. In this paper, present status of this 3-MeV linac is presented.

Performance test of J-PARC 324 MHz klystrons

In the J-PARC linac, a proton accelerator is operated using 45 units of 324 MHz and 972 MHz klystrons. In the future stabilization and advancement of the accelerator, it is important to acquire the klystron output characteristics near the maximum output accurately. In order to understand this characteristics, measurement of the characteristics of the replaced klystron for some reason such as discharge, as well as the new klystron. However, such measurements have not been performed because of the risk of damage including peripheral equipment due to discharge and the temporal interference with the operation of the accelerator. Therefore, we set up a klystron test stand in the linac building and measured the high-voltage characteristics and input/output characteristics of the klystron under various operating parameters. By using this measurement result, the characteristics of klystron can be obtained before installation, and it becomes possible to determine the optimum operation parameters and make effective plan of klystron replacements. In addition, basic data for predicting the degradation tendency of klystron was acquired by comparing the characteristics of the used and used klystron.

Status of the J-PARC Linac LLRF system

In the J-PARC linac, the LLRF systems consist of twenty-four 324-MHz systems and twenty-five 972-MHz systems for ACS cavities. The 324-MHz LLRF systems, which were installed in the stations of RFQ, DTLs, and SDTLs, have been used since the beginning of the J-PARC and are more than ten years into the development. Realistically speaking, the incensement of the failure frequency for these systems is expected. Additionally, it is difficult to maintain those for some discontinued boards of a digital feedback (DFB) and a digital feedforward (DFF) at cPCI, and the older OS and developing environment of software. Therefore, we are starting to study the new LLRF system of the next generation. In the present, we are exploring several possibilities of a new way and investigating each advantage and disadvantage. The project and the status of the development for the new system in the J-PARC linac LLRF are introduced.

We have constructed a linac for development of various accelerator components at J-PARC. The ion source is same as the J-PARC linac's, and the RFQ is a used one in the J-PARC linac. The beam energy is 3 MeV and nominal beam current is 30 mA. The accelerator has been already commissioned, and the first development program, laser-charge-exchange experiment for the transmutation experimental facility, has been started. In this paper, present status of this 3-MeV linac is presented.

Beam commissioning of the linac for iBNCT

The proton linac installed in the Ibaraki Neutron Medical Research Center is used for production of the intense neutron flux for the Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT). The linac consists of the 3-MeV RFQ and the 8-MeV DTL. Design average beam current is 10mA. Target is made of Beryllium. First neutron production from the Beryllium target was observed at the end of 2015 with the low intensity beam as a demonstration. After the observation of neutron production, a lot of improvement s was carried out in order to increase the proton beam intensity for the real beam commissioning. The beam commissioning has been started on May 2016. The status of the commissioning is summarized in this report.

Development of beam scrapers using a 3-Mev linac at J-PARC

We have used a beam scraper with the incident angle of 65deg to reduce the beam power deposition density in the MEBT between a 324 MHz RFQ and a 50-MeV DTL of the J-PARC linac. The 65$$^{circ}$$ scraper was irradiated by the H$$^{-}$$ beam up to particle number of 1.47E22. We observed a lot of surface projections with several hundred micrometers high in the beam irradiation damage on the scraper by using the laser microscope. In order to study the limits of scrapers, we constructed a new 3 MeV linac at J-PARC. We will conduct the scraper irradiation test at the end of this year.

Study of beam loading compensation with comb-like structure at J-PARC linac

In the J-PARC linac, an intermediate-pulse with the comb-like structure is shaped by kicking an unwanted beam by the chopper cavity. Therefore, the cavities lying downstream of the RF-chopper have the beam loading with this beam shape. The present feedforward system which assumes the averaged beam current and not the comb-like beam was operated in the present LLRF, because the beam current in the linac was lower than the design value. However, it has been difficult that the required precision for the RF system is satisfied with increasing beam current. Thus, we performed the beam study of the beam loading compensation with the same shapes as the intermediate-pulses. The positive results for the cavities of SDTL and DTL with high Q values were obtained compared to the present system. On the other hand, when this compensation system was used in the case of ACS cavities, the neighbor modes were excited by the input RF. We have to improve the FF system for the operation against the real beam.

Development of phase rotation system for RF-chopper at J-PARC Linac

In the J-PARC linac, an RF deflector installed in 3-MeV Medium Energy Beam Transport (MEBT1) is used to kick the unnecessary beam and the intermediate-pulse like a comb is created. The kicked beam leads to a scraper downstream the RF deflector and lose all kinetic energy. When the beam current increases to 50 mA of the design value, the heat load of a scraper to irradiate the kicked beam increases and its surface is predicted to be damaged. Therefore, we are preparing the tandem scrapers to reduce the damage. The half of the kicked beam leads to a scraper and the residual is to the other. The chopping operation is achieved by rotating the phase of the RF deflector in the periodic cycles by the LLRF system. We will introduce the phase rotation system and the test results.

Two RF-deflecting cavities as a chopper and a beam scraper have been used in the MEBT1 between a 324 MHz RFQ and a 50-MeV DTL of the J-PARC Linac. We replaced with a newly fabricated RF chopper to decrease beam loss for the operation with 50 mA. We installed two new scrapers to absorb the higher power of the deflected beam by the RF chopper. This paper describes the RF chopper system and beam irradiation test results of the scraper.

We performed a beam test of a new radio frequency quadrupole linac (RFQ III) for the beam current upgrade of the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex. First, the conditioning of RFQ III was conducted, and after 20 h of conditioning, RFQ III became very stable with a nominal peak power and duty factor of 400 kW and 1.5%, respectively. An off-line beam test was subsequently conducted before installation in the accelerator tunnel. The transmission, transverse emittance, and energy spread of the 50-mA negative hydrogen beam from RFQ III were measured and compared with simulation results. The experiment and simulation results showed good agreement; therefore, we conclude that the performance of RFQ III conforms to its design.
