Thermally altered subsurface material of asteroid (162173) Ryugu

Here we report observations of Ryugu's subsurface material by the Near-Infrared Spectrometer (NIRS3) on the Hayabusa2 spacecraft. Reflectance spectra of excavated material exhibit a hydroxyl (OH) absorption feature that is slightly stronger and peak-shifted compared with that observed for the surface, indicating that space weathering and/or radiative heating have caused subtle spectral changes in the uppermost surface. However, the strength and shape of the OH feature still suggests that the subsurface material experienced heating above 300 $$^{circ}$$C, similar to the surface. In contrast, thermophysical modeling indicates that radiative heating does not increase the temperature above 200 $$^{circ}$$C at the estimated excavation depth of 1 m, even if the semimajor axis is reduced to 0.344 au. This supports the hypothesis that primary thermal alteration occurred due to radiogenic and/or impact heating on Ryugu's parent body.

Environmental radiation monitoring around the Tokai Reprocessing Plant has been performed by the Nuclear Fuel Cycle Engineering Laboratories, based on "Safety Regulations for the Reprocessing Plant of Japan Atomic Energy Agency, Chapter IV - Environmental Monitoring". This annual report presents the results of the environmental monitoring and the dose estimation to the hypothetical inhabitant due to the radioactivity discharged from the plant to the atmosphere and the sea during April 2016 to March 2017. In this report, some data include the influence of the accidental release from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station of Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc. in March 2011. Appendices present comprehensive information, such as monitoring programs, monitoring methods, monitoring results and their trends, meteorological data and discharged radioactive wastes. In addition, the data which were influenced by the accidental release and were exceeded the normal range of fluctuation in the monitoring, were evaluated.

Uniaxial ferroelectric BaTi$$_2$$O$$_5$$ with a Curie temperature $$T_{rm C}$$ of 743 K was investigated to clarify its paraelectric-ferroelectric phase transition behavior. The mechanism is discussed on the basis of the structure from short to long ranges determined by synchrotron X-ray diffraction and the lattice dynamics probed by Raman spectroscopy. Using a combination of experimental results and first-principles calculations, we explain the phase transition. Ti vibration of TiO$$_6$$ octahedral units is frozen in the ferroelectric phase and the space group changes from nonpolar $$C2/m$$ to polar $$C2$$.

Electrode properties of Li$$_{2}$$MnO$$_{3}$$ (${it C}$2/${it m}$) for a lithium-battery cathode in several charge-discharge potential ranges

Li$$_{2}$$MnO$$_{3}$$ powder with a monoclinic cell related to the space group of ${it C}$2/${it m}$ was synthesized by a simplified coprecipitation method. Its electrode properties as a lithium-battery cathode were investigated in the charge-discharge potential ranges of 2.0 - 4.6, 2.0 - 4.8, and 2.0 - 5.0 V. In all the potential ranges, the electrochemical capacities gradually increased during cycling, and the increased capacities significantly depended on the potential ranges. Compared to the discharge capacities for the potential ranges of 2.0 - 4.6 and 2.0 - 5.0 V, the former merely increased from 12.5 to 22.5 mAhg$$^{-1}$$ between the 1st and 99th cycles, whereas the latter increased from 20.0 to 110.2 mAhg$$^{-1}$$ during the same cycling. The structural variation in Li$$_{2}$$MnO$$_{3}$$ is induced by the cycling, the rhombohedral phase is detected during cycling in the potential range of 2.0 - 5.0 V.

A manganese-based solid solution with the composition of Li$$_{1.95}$$Mn$$_{0.9}$$Co$$_{0.15}$$O$$_{3}$$ was synthesized by a simplified coprecipitation method, and its electrochemical characteristics as a lithium-battery cathode were investigated. Rietveld refinement based on neutron diffraction data revealed that the material is assigned to an Li$$_{2}$$MnO$$_{3}$$-type structure model with a space group symmetry of ${it C}$2/${it m}$. In cycling of the cell in the potential range from 2.0 to 4.8 V at current densities of 30 mAhg$$^{-1}$$, the discharge capacity characteristically increases from 46.3 to 196.5 mAhg$$^{-1}$$ as the cycle increases from 1 to 11, and a discharge capacity above 175.5 mAhg$$^{-1}$$ is obtained between the 23rd and 58th cycles. The cyclic voltammogram and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements showed that the manganese redox reaction is progressively activated during the first ten-odd cycles.

Based on the regulations (the safety regulation of Tokai reprocessing plant, the safety regulation of nuclear fuel material usage facilities, the radiation safety rule, the regulation about prevention from radiation hazards due to radioisotopes, which are related with the nuclear regulatory acts, and the local agreement concerning with safety and environment conservation around nuclear facilities, the water pollution control law, and byelaw of Ibaraki prefecture), this report describes the effluent control results of liquid waste discharged from the JAEA's Nuclear Fuel Cycle Engineering Laboratories in the fiscal year 2009, from 1st April 2009 to 31st March 2010. In this period, the concentrations and the quantities of the radioactivity in liquid waste discharged from the reprocessing plant, the plutonium fuel fabrication facilities, and the other facilities were much lower than the authorized limits of the above regulations.

In Phase I of the "Feasibility Studies on Commercialized Fast Reactor Cycle Systems (F/S)", an advanced loop type reactor has been selected as a promising concept of sodium-cooled reactor, which has a possibility to fulfill the design requirements of the F/S. In Phase II, design improvement for further cost reduction and the establishment of the plant concept has been performed. In this study, reactor core design and large-scale plant design have been performed by adopting the modified fuel assembly with inner duct structure and double-wall straight tube steam generator (SG), which concepts were chosen at the interim review of FY 2003. For this SG, safety logics have been studied and the structural concept has been established. And the plant designs improving the in-service inspection (ISI) and repair capability have been performed. Furthermore, elaborate confirmation of the design has been performed reflecting the development of elemental technology, back-up concepts have been proposed. Besides, cost reduction measures have been studied by reducing reactor grade materials, introducing autonomous standardizations, simplifying the design due to deregulation and adopting systemized standards for BOP and NSSS. From now on, reflecting the results of elemental experiments, in-depth design studies and examination of critical issues will be carried out and the plant concept will accomplish in preparation for the final evaluation in Phase II.

This report summarizes the results of the design study on the sodium-cooled large-scale reactor performed in JFY2003, which is the third year of Phase 2. In the JFY2003 design study, critical subjects related to safety, structural integrity and thermal hydraulics which found in the last fiscal year has been examined and the plant concept has been modified. Furthermore, fundamental specifications of main systems and components have been set and economy has been evaluated. In addition, as the interim evaluation of the candidate concept of the FBR fuel cycle is to be conducted, cost effectiveness and achievability for the development goal were evaluated and the data of the three large-scale reactor candidate concepts were prepared.

Based on the concept of a plant consisting of four modules with a capacity of 750 MWe each, which has been established by the end of FY2002, a concept of the entire plant was proposed, reflecting the modifications related to the high internal conversion type core, the double-wall straight tube steam generator (SG), and the fuel storage system. Concept studies were also performed to overcome the drawbacks of the sodium and to achieve in-service inspection and repair as easily as in light water reactor. Furthermore, feasibility studies were carried out to confirm the design, which included safety, thermal-hydraulics and the structures of the primary reactor auxiliary cooling system and the double-wall straight tube SG. A prospect for realization of this plant concept has been obtained through the evaluation results. In addition, as the interim evaluation of the candidate concepts of the FBR fuel cycle is to be conducted, cost effectiveness and achievability for the development goal were evaluated and the data of the three medium-scale reactor candidate concepts were prepared.

The attractive concepts for Sodium-, lead-bismuth-, helium- and water-cooled FBRs have been created through using typical plant features and employing advanced technologies. Efforts on evaluating technological prospects of feasibility have been paid for these concepts. Also, it was comfirmed if these concepts satisfy design requierments of capability and performance presumed in the feasibilty study on commertialization of Fast Breeder Reactor Systems. As results, it was concluded that the selection of sodium-cooled reactor was most rational for practical use of FBR technologies in 2015.
