Since a development scale of Horonobe Deep Underground Research is small, this research would permit under the Environmental Impact Assessment Low and the Basic Environment Ordinance of Hokkaido Prefecture. However, because of consideration of recent general social trends, environmental monitoring research was carried out to know this influence.Noise and vibration measurement was conducted at four points around the research area. Water quality measurement was conducted at two points (upper and lower region of Shimizusawa river flowing through the area). Fisheries research was conducted throughout the river and resulted in finding 8 species (including 6 species regarded as endangered). Plant community research according to the Blaun-Blanquet technique (1964) was conducted at two points in the area where rectangular divisions (quadrate) were set.And also, growing condition survey on Hai-dozyoh-tsunagi (Torreyochloa viridis) was conducted. This Hai-dozyoh-tsunagi is regarded as endangered species in Hokkaido, had been transplanted as an environment protection measure in 2003. From these results, the influence on the environment after construction and the progress after conduction of measure for protecting environment were checked. Consequently, the influence of construction was not found at present time. Therefore the measure was judged enough to protect environment. After this construction, the environmental monitoring research should be carrying out to check the influence and it would be necessary to conduct the quick and suitable measure to avoid or mitigate the influence.

A Portable system installed with a mini X-ray generator for red/blue TL and OSL measurements

A portable system was designed for red/blue thermoluminescence (TL) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL). Its main components consist of a mini X-ray source, a small photomultiplier (PMT). a precision rotation wheel for loading 8-samples, a heater assembly made from ceramics heater, and light emitting diode array. The unit was framed to a square box with a bow part which is available for sample-pan change. A lid-cover is tightened by a hinge arrangement in order to prevent a permeation of light from the exterior and evacuate chamber which may be filled with an inert gas if necessary. For the new system, RTL-measurement was satisfactorily performed with high sensitivity in spite of a little bit higher background due to lack of cooling power down to 0$$^{circ}$$C even in the field experiment. However, the X-rays with relatively low energy, such as several keV, brought on the different dose-response behavior dependent on the quartz grain-diameter.

As a part of development of diamond energy spectrometers using the $$^{12}$$C(n,$$alpha$$)$$^{9}$$Be reaction for DT plasma ion temperature measurement, response functions measurement of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) single crystal diamonds for alpha particles and 14 MeV neutrons were carried out. One diamond sample was synthesized by the national institute of advanced industrial science and technology (AIST) aiming at a large size and high-quality substrate for electric device with higher methane concentration of 10%. This diamond crystal was chosen according to intensity of free exciton recombination luminescence. In addition, a CVD single crystal diamond, categorized in "detector grade" synthesized by Element 6 Inc. was evaluated.Response function measurement of 14 MeV neutrons were carried out at the Fusion Neutronic Source facility of Japan Atomic Energy Agency. Energy resolutions of 4.3% and 5.2% for the $$^{12}$$C(n,$$alpha$$)$$^{9}$$Be reaction were obtained by the two CVD diamond single crystals. In general, energy spectrometer grade CVD diamond single crystals are grown using lower methane concentration, i.e., 1%. However, this results revealed that even higher methane concentration of 10% can grow energy spectrometer grade CVD diamond single crystals.
