The decommissioning is currently in progress at the prototype fast breeder reactor Monju. Fuel assemblies will be taken out of its core for the first step of the great task. Fuel assemblies stand on their own spike plugged into a socket on the core support plate and support with adjacent assemblies through their housing pads each other, resulting in steady core structure. For this reason, some substitutive assemblies are necessary for the purpose of discharging the fuel assemblies of the core. Monju side commissioned, therefore, Plutonium Fuel Development Center to manufacture the substitutive assemblies and the Center accepted it. This report gives descriptions of design, manufacture, and shipment in regard to the substitutive assemblies.

The neutron instruments suite, installed at the spallation neutron source of the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), is reviewed. MLF has 23 neutron beam ports and 21 instruments are in operation for user programs or are under commissioning. A unique and challenging instrumental suite in MLF has been realized via combination of a high-performance neutron source, optimized for neutron scattering, and unique instruments using cutting-edge technologies. All instruments are/will serve in world-leading investigations in a broad range of fields, from fundamental physics to industrial applications. In this review, overviews, characteristic features, and typical applications of the individual instruments are mentioned.

This paper describes safety requirements for JSFR conformed to the defense-in-depth principle in IAEA. The safety design accommodation in JSFR was validated by safety analyses for representative DBEs: primary pump seizure and long-term loss-of-offsite power accidents. The safety analysis also showed the effectiveness of the passive shutdown system and mitigation measures against a typical ATWS.

The superconducting neutron detector using high-quality $$^{10}$$B-enriched MgB$$_2$$ thin films at higher operating temperatures has been proposed, where a resistance change induced by the nuclear reaction of neutron and $$^{10}$$B in MgB$$_2$$ is used to detect a neutron. Cold neutrons from a nuclear research reactor irradiated the MgB$$_2$$ detector, and the output voltage was clearly observed through a low-noise amplifier by using a digital oscilloscope. The out-of-equilibrium thermodynamics was investigated by means of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations by using the Earth Simulator.

In the first licensing procedure of the prototype FBR "Monju", the event sequence of ULOF (Unprotected Loss of Flow) was analyzed and the estimated mechanical energy was about 380 MJ as an isentropic expansion potential to atmospheric pressure. The prototype FBR has been stopped for more than 10 years since the sodium leakage accident in the secondary loop in 1995. The neutronic characteristics of reactor core changed as a consequence of radioactive decay of fissile Plutonium during this shutdown period. In order to assess the effect of this neutronic characteristics change to the mechanical energy release in ULOF, the event sequence of ULOF was analyzed reflecting the current knowledge, which was obtained by safety studies after the first licensing of the prototype reactor. It was shown that the evaluated mechanical energy release became smaller than 380 MJ, even with the change of neutronic characteristics.

SIMMER-III; A Coupled neutronics-thermohydraulics computer code for safety analysis

Yamano, Hidemasa; Tobita, Yoshiharu; Fujita, Satoshi; Suzuki, Toru; Kamiyama, Kenji; Morita, Koji*; Maschek, W.*; Pigny, S.*

Proceedings of 15th International Conference on Nuclear Engineering (ICONE-15) (CD-ROM), 8 Pages, 2007/04

To simulate complex phenomena during core disruptive accidents in sodium-cooled fast reactors, JAEA has been developing the SIMMER-III code, which is two-dimensional, multi-velocity-field, multi-phase, multi-component, Eulerian, fluid-dynamics code coupled with a fuel-pin model and a space- and energy-dependent neutron kinetics model. Recently, the three-dimensional code SIMMER-IV is also developed with the same physical model as SIMMER-III. In the present paper, the models and methods of SIMMER-III/IV are briefly reviewed with highlighting the recent improvements. The major achievements of the code assessment program are then described, followed by presentation of practical applications. A three-dimensional calculation with SIMMER-IV are also shown to indicate more realistic accident scenario. In addition, this calculation result show the disrupted core state for investigating the post-accident material relocation and heat removal phase.

Physics issues and simulation of the JT-60 SA divertor for large heat and particle handling

Asakura, Nobuyuki; Kawashima, Hisato; Shimizu, Katsuhiro; Sakurai, Shinji; Fujita, Takaaki; Takenaga, Hidenobu; Nakano, Tomohide; Kubo, Hirotaka; Higashijima, Satoru; Hayashi, Takao; et al.

Europhysics Conference Abstracts (CD-ROM), 31F, 4 Pages, 2007/00

Divertor design for the JT-60 SA has been progressing in order to handle large heat flux during full pulse duration of 100 s. Divertor should be suitable for single null plasma experiments with the full power injection of 41 MW. The simulation results using 2D fluid (plasma) and Monte-Carlo (neutral) code are summarized. Lower single-null divertor is designed for ITER-like plasma configuration in order to study physics concept of the ITER divertor: control of the plasma detachment. Simulation results for various divertor geometries showed that the vertical target with V-shaped corner can produce plasma detachment near the outer strike-point for medium edge plasma density. It was also demonstrated that the divertor plasma became attached to move the outer strike point above the V-corner, suggesting that recover from sever detachment can be achieved by changing the plasma location. USN divertor will be designed for high-$$beta$$ plasma experiments with the highest shaping plasma of S=6.
