The progress in structural analytical techniques of polymer crystals have been reviewed at first. The structural models proposed so far were reinvestigated and new models have been proposed for various kinds of polymer crystals including polyethylene, poly(vinyl alcohol), poly(lactic acid) and its stereocomplex etc. The hydrogen atomic positions were also clarified by the quantitative analysis of wide-angle neutron diffraction data, from which the physical properties of polymer crystals have been evaluated theoretically. The bonded electron density distribution has been estimated for a polydiacetylene single crystal on the basis of the so-called X-N method or by the combination of structural information derived from X-ray and neutron diffraction data analysis. Some comments have been added about future developments in the field of structure-property relationship determination.

Following the release of radionuclides into the environment as a result of the accident at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) had to develop an immediate and effective method of reducing the dose rate received by students in school facilities. A demonstration of a reducing method was carried out by JAEA at a junior high school ground and kindergarten yard in the center of Fukushima-city. Dose rates of the released radionuclides are largely controlled by the ground level contamination and accumulation of mainly cesium-137 (Cs) and cesium-134 (Cs) in populated areas. An effective means of reducing dose rate was to remove the surface soil and to bury it on-site under fresh uncontaminated soil or soil collected under deep depth at the site for shielding. The dose rate at1 m above ground level was reduced from 2.5 Sv/h to 0.15 Sv/h.

We present the inverse slope parameter, mean transverse momentum, and yield per unit rapidity at each energy, and compare them to other measurements at different collisions. We also present the scaling properties such as and scaling and discuss the mechanism of the particle production in collisions. The measured spectra are compared to next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations.

Here we extend these studies to two particle correlations where one particle is an electron from the decay of a heavy flavor meson and the other is a charged hadron from either the decay of the heavy meson or from jet fragmentation. These measurements provide more detailed information about the interaction between heavy quarks and the quark-gluon matter. We find the away-side-jet shape and yield to be modified in Au+Au collisions compared to collisions.

The maximum measured specific activity of I in brown algae was 0.370.010 Bq/kg-wet. Cesium-137 (Cs) was also detected in all brown algal samples used in this study. There was no correlation between specific activities of I and Cs in these seaweeds. Low specific activity and minimal variability of Cs in brown algae indicated that past nuclear weapon tests were the source of Cs. Although nuclear power facilities are known to be pollution sources of I, there was no relationship between the sites where I was detected and the locations of nuclear power facilities. Most of the sites where I was detected were near big cities with large populations. On the basis of the results, we suggest that the likely pollution source of I, detected in brown seaweeds, is not nuclear power facilities, but nuclear medicine procedures.

To elucidate effects of mutations in this region on the regulatory function of Tn, we measured Ca-dependent ATPase activity of myofibrils containing various mutants of TnT at these residues. The results confirmed that the mutant E244D increases the maximum ATPase activity without changing the Ca sensitivity. The mutant K247R was shown for the first time to have the effect similar to the mutant E244D. Furthermore, various TnT mutants (E244D, E244M, E244A, E244K, K247R, K247E, and K247A) showed various effects on the maximum ATPase activity while the Ca sensitivity was unchanged. Molecular dynamics simulations of the Tn-core containing these TnT mutants suggested that the hydrogen-bond network formed by the side chains of neighboring residues around residues 244 and 247 is important for Tn to function properly.

Knowledge of structures of these proteins is indispensable for elucidating the molecular mechanism of this Ca-sensitive regulation. Here the structure of TnC within the thin filaments was investigated with neutron scattering, combined with selective deuteration and the contrast matching technique. Deuterated TnC was prepared, reconstituted into the native thin filaments, and neutron scattering patterns of these reconstituted thin filaments containing deuterated TnC were measured under the condition where non-deuterated components were rendered 'invisible' to neutrons. The obtained scattering curves arising only from deuterated TnC were analyzed by model calculations using the Monte Carlo method. The results showed that upon binding of Ca, radius of gyration of TnC changed from 23 AA to 24 AA , and the radial position of TnC within the thin filament changed from 53 AA to 49 AA .

The results were compared quantitatively with those obtained from the X-ray and electron diffraction experiments as well as the computer simulation result.

The charge distribution was well reproduced by a Gaussian function with the most probable charge (Z) expressed by Z = RA + S, and with the A-independent FWHME. The charge distribution parameters R, S and FWHM were independent of E above 600 MeV. The weighted mean values at E 600 MeV were R = 0.421 0.001, S = 0.6 0.1 and FWHM = 2.1 0.1 charge unit (c.u.). Based on the charge distribution parameters, the symmetric mass yield distributions with the most probable mass A of 96 1 mass unit (m.u.) and the width FWHM of 33 1 m.u. were also obtained. The characteristics of the charge and mass yield distributions are discussed by referring to those for Au based on the results of calculations using PICA3/GEM.
