Reviews of Accelerator Science and Technology, 8, p.181 - 207, 2015/00

We choose nuclear data and nuclear material inspection for energy application and nondestructive testing of explosive and hidden nuclear materials for security application. 90 keV electrostatic accelerators of deuterium are commercially available for nondestructive testing. For nuclear data measurement, electrostatic ion accelerators and L-band and S-band electron linear accelerators (linac) are used for the neutron source. Compact or mobile X-band electron linac neutron sources are under development. Compact proton linac neutron source is used for nondestructive testing especially water in solids. Several efforts for more neutron intensity using proton and deuteron accelerators are also introduced.

An Investigation of microbial effect as biofilm formation on radionuclide migration

Materials Research Society Symposium Proceedings, Vol.1475, p.617 - 622, 2012/06

Since it was suggested that the microbes have ability to generate their biofilm in deep underground condition, we examined the effects of biofilm on radionuclide migration scenario. To estimate the effect on matrix diffusion, through diffusion experiment for a biofilm of Desulfovivrio desullfuricans were performed. The effective diffusion coefficient of the biofilm was 10$$^{-10}$$ m$$^{2}$$/s order which was about ten times smaller than that in free water. It is suggesting that the microbes and biofilm will not interfere with matrix diffusion as a retardation of radionuclide in rock.

Nuclear Physics Review, 26(Suppl.), p.94 - 99, 2009/07

We constructed MeV- and sub-MeV-photon sources by means of Compton backscattering with a laser light and an electron beam at SPring-8 and KPSI-JAEA. MeV-photon source consists of a continuous-wave optically-pumped far infrared laser and an 8-GeV stored electron beam. Sub-MeV-photon source consists of a Nd:YAG pulse-laser and an 150-MeV electron beam accelerated by a microtron. Both source have been succeeded backscattered photon generation. In this talk, I will present characteristics and future prospects of these photon sources.

A test experimental line at SPring-8 has been constructed for the generation of backward Compton scattered (BCS) $$gamma$$-ray by head-on collision between an 8 GeV electron beam and a far-infrared (FIR) laser. For the FIR laser, we use a continuous-wave methanol laser optically pumped by a carbon dioxide ($${rm CO}_{2}$$) laser. The FIR laser output power achieved is 1.6 W at maximum for 118.8 $$mu$$m lasing; this value is the highest in the case of this type of laser. As a result of the direct measurement, the generated BCS $$gamma$$-ray flux was found to be about $$10^{3}$$ photons/s. This value is consistent with the estimation calculated by taking into account the input laser power and the transmittance of the laser transport system.

A new actively-cooled plasma electrode has been developed for long pulse operation in a cesium-seeded negative ion source. To keep the electrode temperature at about 300 $$^{circ}$$C, which is optimum range of temperature to enhance cesium effects, the electrode cooling structure has been designed using three-dimensional numerical simulation assuming that the heat flux from the source plasma was 15 W/cm$$^{2}$$. Water cooling tubes were brazed to the plasma electrode substrate with spacers made of stainless steel which acts as a thermal resistance. The fabricated plasma electrode has been tested in a cesium-seeded volume negative ion source called Kamaboko source. The temperature of the electrode reached 280 $$^{circ}$$C for the arc power of 41 kW, which is operating condition required for producing D- beams with current densities exceeding 20 mA/cm$$^{2}$$. It was demonstrated that the actively-cooled plasma electrode is applicable to long pulse operations, meeting the temperature requirement for optimizing the surface-production process of negative ions in the cesium seeded ion source.
