We show that the strongly correlated 4-orbital symmetry of the ground state is revealed by linear dichroism in core-level photoemission spectra, as we have discovered for YbRh $_{2}$ Si $_{2}$ and YbCu $_{2}$ Si $_{2}$ . Theoretical analysis shows us that the linear dichroism reflects the anisotropic charge distributions resulting from a crystalline electric field. We have successfully determined the ground-state 4 symmetry for both compounds from the polarization-dependent angle resolved core-level spectra at a temperature well below the first excitation energy. The excited-state symmetry is also probed by temperature dependence of the linear dichroism where the high measurement temperatures are on the order of the crystal-field-splitting energies.

Non-Fermi liquid behavior in nonlinear susceptibility in Pr $_{0.05}$ La $_{0.95}$ Pb

We measure the temperature dependence of the nonlinear susceptibility ${chi}_3$ in Pr $_{0.05}$ La $_{0.95}$ Pb. ${chi}_3$ reflects the fluctuation of the quadrupolar moments. Non-Fermi liquid behavior of ${chi}_3$ with -dependence is detected below 2.5 K, suggesting that the screening of the quadrupolar moments is responsible for the anomalous behavior at low temperatures. These results provide a direct evidence for the crucial role of the quadrupolar moments in Pr $_{0.05}$ La $_{0.95}$ Pb.

We measure the temperature dependence of the nonlinear susceptibility ${chi}_3$ , which reflects the fluctuation of quadrupolar moments in, Pr $_{0.05}$ La $_{0.95}$ Pb $_{3}$ which a ${Gamma}_3$ non-Kramers doublet in the crystal-electric-field ground state to provide evidence of the quadrupolar Kondo effect. Non-Fermi liquid behavior of ${chi}_3$ with a - ln dependence is detected in the [100] and [110] directions below 2.5 K, suggesting the screening of quadrupolar moments. In contrast, ${chi}_3$ in the [111] direction becomes constant below 3 K. The observed features indicate that a low-lying ${Gamma}_3$ doublet plays a crucial role in the anomalous properties of PrLa $_{1-x}$ Pb.
