A combination of a petawatt laser and nuclear physics techniques can crucially facilitate the measurement of exotic nuclei properties. With numerical simulations and laser-driven experiments we show prospects for the Laser-driven Exotic Nuclei extraction-acceleration method proposed in [M. Nishiuchi et al., Phys. Plasmas 22, 033107 (2015)]: a femtosecond petawatt laser, irradiating a target bombarded by an external ion beam, extracts from the target and accelerates to few GeV highly charged short-lived heavy exotic nuclei created in the target via nuclear reactions.

Experimental demonstration of multi-charged heavy ion acceleration from the interaction between the ultra-intense short pulse laser system and the metal target is presented. The laser pulse of $$<$$10 J laser energy, 36 fs pulse width, and the contrast level of $$sim$$ 10$$^{10}$$ from 200 TW class Ti:sapphire J-KAREN laser system at JAEA is used in the experiment. Almost fully stripped Fe ions accelerated up to 0.9 GeV are demonstrated. This is achieved by the high intensity laser field of $$sim$$10$$^{21}$$Wcm$$^{-2}$$ interacting with the solid density target. The demonstrated iron ions with high charge to mass ratio (Q/M) is difficult to be achieved by the conventional heavy ion source technique in the accelerators.

Almost fully stripped Fe ions accelerated up to 0.9 GeV are demonstrated with a 200 TW femtosecond high-intensity laser irradiating a micron-thick Al foil with Fe impurity on the surface. An energetic low-emittance high-density beam of heavy ions with a large charge-to-mass ratio can be obtained, which is useful for many applications, such as a compact radio isotope source in combination with conventional technology.

Future synchrotron light source using a 5-GeV energy recovery linac (ERL) is under proposal by our Japanese collaboration team, and we are conducting R&D efforts for that. We are developing high-brightness DC photocathode guns, two types of cryomodules for both injector and main superconducting (SC) linacs, and 1.3 GHz high CW-power RF sources. We are also constructing the Compact ERL (cERL) for demonstrating the recirculation of low-emittance, high-current beams using above-mentioned critical technologies.

We constructed MeV- and sub-MeV-photon sources by means of Compton backscattering with a laser light and an electron beam at SPring-8 and KPSI-JAEA. MeV-photon source consists of a continuous-wave optically-pumped far infrared laser and an 8-GeV stored electron beam. Sub-MeV-photon source consists of a Nd:YAG pulse-laser and an 150-MeV electron beam accelerated by a microtron. Both source have been succeeded backscattered photon generation. In this talk, I will present characteristics and future prospects of these photon sources.

Development of the volume reduction treatment of solid waste system by ultra-high frequency induction furnace

The volume reduction treatment of solid waste system by ultra-high frequency induction furnace (UHFIF) was developed from FY2005 to FY2007. Basic data for melting performance were collected by non-radioactive experiments using the bench scale UHFIF with a crucible capacity of 10 liters. Based on the obtained data, engineering specifications were evaluated for a demonstration scale UHFIF with a crucible capacity of 30 liters. A new demonstration scale UHFIF was constructed and melting experiments of surrogate wastes were carried out by this furnace. It was confirmed that the demonstration scale UHFIF can melt ferrous metal, ceramics and aluminum all together and stabilize aluminum by oxidation to alumina. Density, chemical composition, and surface condition of the solidified substances were analyzed, and homogeneity of the solidified substances was confirmed. Melting behavior in the demonstration scale UHFIF was analyzed by computer simulation and simulation results agreed well with the experimental ones. From the design study for a full scale UHFIF with a crucible capacity of 100 liters, basic specifications were evaluated for the full scale UHFIF. Based on the obtained specification, melting behavior in the full scale UHFIF was analyzed by computer simulation.

PURSE:A Plutonium Radiation Source Code

PURSE has been developed to calculate alpha, beta, $$gamma$$ ray and neutron intensity from fresh plutonium mixed-oxide fuels which contain daughter nuclides of plutonium and uranium. PURSE also has an ability to calculate $$gamma$$ ray spectrum from mixed-oxide fuels. Four main decay chains of uranium, actinium, thorium and neptunium are considered. In addition, decay chains of transplutonium elements and some kinds of Fission Product elements which will be slightly remained in plutonium after reprocessing are also considered. Number of curies and emission energy of alpha, beta and $$gamma$$ ray from nuclides in these decay chains are calculated as a function of time. The number of energy groups of $$gamma$$ ray can be taken up to 18, the total and average energy of each groups can be calculated, and the $$gamma$$ ray spectrum is plotted by the use of a plotter. As for neutron generation, spontaneus fission and ($$alpha$$, n) reaction with oxygen are considered. PURSE is written in FORTRAN IV for the CDC 6600 and a running time is about one minute. A plotter is the CalComp 915-1136.
